Theme episodes usually, in my opinion, aren't a good sign, with the only exception being the deaf episode this series had since, well it fit. But, with Kathryn finding joy in dance, and the writers seemingly wanting to have an ode to dance in this episode, let's just hope what usually happens when a show decides to do episodes like this doesn't happen to this series. The powers that be willing.
Topic 1: Adjustments
In the episode, alongside dancing, adjustments are one of the key themes. Starting with Bay, with her back in her college course, with a bum hand, she finds herself back to dealing with Theresa being unimpressed with her work. And, being that Bay may have evolved, but still is Bay, she begins to whine and bring up excuses which Theresa isn't trying to hear. Luckily though, with Emmett's encouragement, and him helping her adjust the way she presents art, we not only get a cute Bemmett moment, but also get to see Bay succeed in the long run.
As for Daphne, playing hero once, which Jorge bluntly says is more so her fixing her own mistake, has lead her to have aspirations to become a doctor. Thing is, the whole non-hearing thing almost leads a kid who was having a seizure to his possible death. With this, doubt enters her mind and Dr. Jackson tries to give a pep talk and tries to relate his plight as an African-American to her being deaf, but the difference makes it so Daphne doesn't get it. So he goes further and notes that, like himself, you have to figure out a way to reach your dreams and, in the words of Jenifer Lewis, "The elevator is broken, take the stairs." Meaning, Dr. Jackson tells Daphne it won't be easy, nor a quick road, but considering how excited Melody is, Regina is, and Adrianna, perhaps Daphne won't quit just yet.
And speaking of quitting, despite my hopes of possibly seeing Kathryn and John divorce, John seemingly got it through his thick head that he needs to adjust and not be so stagnant and stern. But, to me, I found it strange how Renzo telling him off once seemed to change him almost overnight. I mean, John has been whining and complaining about Kathryn changing and being her own person since, well since we met the guy. But I guess he must have finally seen that Kathryn was truly unhappy and decided now is the time to change. Hopefully though, this doesn't mean their issues are now gone and they are now going to be two happy doves. All things considered, him being willing to dance is just the start. His attitude, to me, is really what their major issue is.
Topic 2: How About a Little Romance
Though I already mentioned it above, I must say this again, for whatever reason, the show decided to tease us with a Bemmett moment again. For, as we have seen in the past, Emmett and Bay can't have an episode in which they interact which doesn't lead to them either flirting, or Bay thinking she may like Emmett again before the memory of him cheating getting brought back up. But, in this episode, as Emmett continues his redemption tour, he helps Bay with her art project by taking her to this, movie set-esque place some millionaire made since his wife got Alzheimer's. And, between him helping, the story, and the two of them dancing, it is hard to really believe these two aren't end game.
Those two aside though, strangely, despite Angelo and Regina both being in the episode, we see little to no romance out of them, but this is compensated with us getting a healthy dose of Travis and Mary Beth. Making it seem, like Twisted, while the leads are often thrown into various relationships, the supporting characters end up in the type of relationships that are so cute you could become envious or jealous. I say this because, the ever so sweet, and insecure, Travis comes to the thought that he is holding Mary Beth back from experiencing life. Worse enough he is deaf and is limited to some things, but now Mary Beth can't go to the movies because the captioned screenings are only in the morning, and Travis seemingly is ready to make a list of why she will likely leave him, and though if it was anyone else it would make you roll your eyes, somehow Travis, though really the actor, makes it work. Be it his character's background story is well known to us, or it being because he really seems like a nice guy just trying to have a stable attachment in his life, either way I found myself tearing up as Mary Beth was reassuring him. Hell, just remembering that scene got a tear in my eye.
Making so, overall, despite the dance element, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I mean, yes, John seems to have gotten on Kathryn good side a bit quicker than I would have preferred, but I guess they have to set the example for the couples of the show. But, with that said, I was a bit perturbed by the lack of Vasquez family togetherness. No Regina and Angelo having something cute, and though Angelo and Bay had one or two scenes together, he continually has more interaction with Toby, and damn near everyone else, in comparison to Bay. Which really upsets me. Still, it isn't like the show is ending anytime soon, so they can still fix that.
