In this episode, there are quite a bit of references to what happened in the past. Be it the relationships between Bay and Emmett, as well as Angelo and Regina; Daphne's violent encounter when she had her taco bus; and multiple instances in which "I told you so" is either verbally said or implied, everyone is going through something which they have to overcome.
Topic 1: "I Told You So" – Regina/ Toby/ Kathryn
For both Toby and Regina, advice, or warning, given in the past come to haunt them. For Toby, his parents warning of getting married too young seem to bite him in the behind since Nikki is gone and he is miserable because of it. He sees himself as a slight failure for, on top of screwing up the opportunity to go to college, he now is the manager of a car wash and has an apartment which was made for his marital bliss, but now only presents a bad memory. And with Toby this down, John and Kathryn try their best to console him.
John goes up and his advice almost sends Toby flying down to Peru to be with Nikki. However, Kathryn steps in and sets him straight by relating to him. In her speech to him, she talks about how she resented John for a long time because she put his career before her happiness. And being that she doesn't want Toby to resent Nikki, she presents the old adage: "When one door closes, a window opens" and this leads to Toby deciding that he won't go to Peru, but, instead he is going to Greenland with no explanation why.
Speaking of Kathryn, in the episode her book leaks and she freaks out and thinks Renzo did it. With the accusation though comes Renzo really asserting himself as more than Kathryn's sassy gay sidekick. He is a man with a friend struggling with cancer, one whose staunchly Catholic family has some issues with his sexuality, and as Kathryn tries to have a pity party, he flips that damn table over, figuratively, and reminds her to not worry what people think. But being that Kathryn is in a place where she needs validation, she is a mess until Lydia reveals she leaked the book and there is actually good press for the book.
Lastly, there is Regina. After disappointing her mom and becoming a villain in her former community, she decides to rectify things by informing the shop owners about their options of getting a lawyer and doing their own appraisals. Naturally, this pisses off Wes who pretty much has had it with her back and forth and this move of backstabbing him was the last straw. So, he fires her, asks for his car back, threatens a lawsuit, and wants his $50,000 back. Thus leading to an issue between her and Angelo since the whole "it's our money" thing stop being the truth a long time ago. Angelo is upset she put integrity before money, and their fight is so intense that not only is it left without them reconciling, but she implies she made it without him before and could do it again. So while John and Kathryn may have recovered, maybe Angelo and Regina may divorce!
Topic 2: A Fork in the Road - Daphne
As for Daphne, with her seeing Adam, part of the duo who robbed her when she had a taco truck, she begins to question whether getting into the medical profession is the right path for her. She claims that helping a murderer or rapist isn't something she may be able to do, so when Angelo comes around she talks about working at his restaurant when it opens, renewing that old dream. But as Adam comes to the clinic a 2nd time, the first time not even looking at Daphne, she has to help him as he deals with withdrawal symptoms from heroin, and in this moment she seemingly chooses which path she will take. One in which she maybe become the first doctor in the family.
Topic 3: I Never Stopped Loving You - Bay
Leaving the last topic being Bay. With her relationship with Tank, it seemed she calmed down her usual onslaught of drama. However, she ends up becoming what she hates the most: A cheater.
You see, with Bay revealing Mandy maybe a fake, Emmett goes off. But mind you, it is for multiple reasons. For one, his love for Mandy has really gone over the top for an online relationship. And with his grades slipping from not sleeping enough, his mom is really on his case. But, despite her taking his keys as punishment, he simply hot wires his bike, skips school, and goes to have his first meeting with the girl. Thing is, what he finds at the meeting spot is Matthew, the guy Emmett snitched on earlier in the season.
Now, as most would understand, this trickery pisses Emmett off to the point of fighting Matthew, but unfortunately for Emmett, he can't compete and ends up getting his butt whooped. Luckily though, Bay was investigating Mandy for most of the episode and discovered, a bit too late, Matthew's deception. But, with Emmett, for some odd reason, still in the same place where he got his ass whooped, he explains why he was so invested in Mandy. You see, he has been kicking himself over losing Bay for so long that Mandy seemed like the only way to have something close to what he had with her. And with these words, and with how much time has passed, the two do more than make out, the episode ends with them seemingly having sex in the park.
