Dear Danny and Kelley,I like that that you use the word “traveling,” which marvelously evokes both the continuous physical wandering from one screen to the next, as well as the transporting experience of the cinematic rabbit-holes themselves. These travels can have a palpably elemental side, and this year’s Tiff has offered generous lashings of fire (mother!), air (The Florida Project), and crumbly earth (Let the Corpses Tan). Now comes the aquatic side with Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, a luxuriously fanciful rendering of an amphibious King Kong out of the primeval Amazon and into Baltimore circa 1962. A fairy tale, as stated in narration and visualized under the opening credits, in which the camera swims through a majestically submerged abode that’s gradually drained and revealed as the shabby apartment of the protagonist. Introduced as “the princess without a voice,” mute cleaning lady Elisa (Sally Hawkins...

At one unexpected moment in Guillermo del Toro’s virtuosic new film, the characters break into a song. The lights dim, the colors drain to black and white and Sally Hawkins’ otherwise mute Elisa takes Doug Jones’ unnamed creature by the hand, and the two begin hoofing old Hollywood style in a “Top Hat” reminiscent musical number set to the old standard “You’ll Never Know (Just How Much I Love You).” It’s just one more magical moment in a film full of them, another reminder that not only is “The Shape of Water” one of del Toro’s most stunningly successful works, it’s also a powerful vision of a creative master feeling totally, joyously free.
Set in ever-rainy Baltimore of 1962, the film is one part love story, one part Cold War thriller and one part exploration of American culture – and that’s before we even mention the monster.

I'm going to break form to set up this poll, because it feels entirely personal to me, but I'm getting ahead of myself. As previously reported, after the season six finale, star Jennifer Morrison is leaving the Once Upon a Time TV show and her character, Emma Swan, daughter of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (aka David Nolan; Josh Dallas). While Once Upon a Time is renewed for a seventh season, Morrison has contracted to appear in just one future episode. For what it's worth, Once Upon a Time was renewed for season seven on May 11th. Details here. A fairy tale fantasy drama, Once Upon a Time also stars Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, Emilie de Ravin, Colin O’Donoghue, Rebecca Mader, and Jared Gilmore. It's long been known that the seventh season will be a reboot without Goodwin and Dallas. Still,...

The more things change… Back in 1991, Celine Dion teamed with Peabo Bryson to sing the theme song for the Disney animated movie “Beauty And The Beast,” and it earned a Grammy nomination and Oscar win. Now over twenty-five years later, Dion is back with a new, original song for the live action movie, with the mouse house clearly hoping to recreate some movie magic.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A fairy tale of the Grimm sort: no happy ending, no heroes or villains, just hard truths about life and human nature. Important, beautiful, heartbreaking. I’m “biast” (pro): big fantasy fan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
This is my big worry re A Monster Calls: people who don’t read reviews will hear only that this is a fantasy movie based on a young-adult novel and presume that it is a kiddie movie. And then they will freak out when they discover how dark and angry and bitter and oh-so un-fairy-tale it is, how it gave the little ones scary dreams and why didn’t someone tell them? And a movie that is important and beautiful and heartbreaking will be unfairly maligned.
So be warned: This is not The Bfg.

teenagers
Logline: Unhindered by politics or network censorship, “teenagers” is a dark, fresh and educational web series that authentically illustrates the world of millennial youth, written and created by filmmakers who have experienced it first-hand.
Elevator Pitch:
“Degrassi meets HBO.” We dig deeper than shows like “Degrassi,” moving beyond the censored “polish” of most teen dramas, creating a series that is authentic, cinematic and exciting for teenagers and adults. Think John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club” meets Larry Clark’s “Kids” in a series of short, punchy, thrilling, and digestible episodes. “teenagers” (purposefully spelt with a...

Logline: Liv, after years of silence, begins to weave a language of her own out of Shakespeare’s words. “The Sounding” is a psychological mystery about a woman who literally speaks her mind. Crazy, right?
Elevator Pitch:
On an island off the coast of Maine, Liv, after years of silence, begins to weave a language out of Shakespeare’s words. Years ago, when the Vertigo Comics series Fables was particularly popular, Warner Bros. was talking about making a movie based on it, and for a long time Harry Potter director David Yates was attached to direct it with it being produced by that franchise’s David Heyman.
Not that long ago, Yates dropped out of the project, and when you see Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them it might be obvious why, because the two projects certainly have similarities, dealing with fantasy and magic brought into the real world, specifically New York City.
When Lrm spoke with Heyman and Yates at the Fantastic Beasts junket last week, we asked them both about the project, firstly asking Yates whether the similarities were why he dropped out of the project.
“Do you know what's really strange? I'll tell you what's really odd,” he said. “There were two things I was quite...

A corporate-sponsored disco rave from the happiest recesses of hell, “Trolls” tells the incredible true story of what happened when DreamWorks Animation got really thirsty for that “Minions” money on the same day that a disgruntled former employee decided to spike the entire company’s water supply with massive amounts of ecstasy. Don’t believe what the lame-stream media tells you: that’s definitely what happened. How else to explain this manic rainbow orgy of glitter farts and poop cupcakes? How else to explain how a series of plastic figurines become the basis for a deliriously psychedelic jukebox musical that reinterprets Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” as a veiled attack against the pharmaceutical industry?
Needless to say, Thomas Dam — the Danish woodcutter who created those wild-haired Troll Dolls for his daughter in 1959, and died a very wealthy man in 1988 — is about to give a whole new meaning to the expression: “Rolling in his grave.

“Where there’s life, there’s hope,” King Ezekiel told Carol — and, by extension, all of us — in Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead. And, after that brutal Season 7 premiere, it was certainly a message that we needed to hear, even if it was still damn hard to believe. Luckily, we had to absorb it the whole rest of the light, funny hour — in which we learned not only how The Kingdom’s leader became its leader but also how he wound up with a pet tiger. So, what’s their story? Read on…

They cost millions and they’re very, very odd. We take a look at 12 expensive and eccentric Hollywood films from the past 40 years...
The risk-averse nature of filmmaking means that the world’s more maverick and outrageous writers and directors have to make do with relatively low budgets. Nicolas Winding Refn drenched the screen in all kinds of sordid, violent and startling imagery in such films as Only God Forgives and this year’s The Neon Demon, but the combined budget of those probably didn’t even match the catering budget for something like Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Every so often, though, a truly bonkers film slips through the Hollywood studio system - often by accident. From horror sequels to original sci-fi adventures, here are 12 incredibly expensive and gloriously eccentric Hollywood movies from the past 40 years.
