- Meredith and Bailey tackle jealousy as Cristina receives an early morning phone call that might change her life; Callie comes to a shocking realization and Alex makes a decision.
- Cristina is waiting for a call from the Harper Avery Foundation. It rings.
Back at the hospital, Jo, Stephanie and Leah talk about how Shane asked if "we" got the call from the Harper Avery Foundation. They think he's going to be insufferable.
There's a girl named Frankie walking around saying hi to all the doctors.
April is worried that she and Jackson are spending too much money on extravagances.
Frankie comes and says hi to Braden, the kid with the immune deficiency. The doctors come in with Braden's parents and his mother leaves the room crying. His T cell count is still at zero. Bailey tells him the only safe place for him is where he is -- inside his bubble.
Cristina is checking on her patient, Lincoln -- with the help of Frankie, his sister, who was a patient but now seems to just be going around the hospital keeping track of all the patients and telling Cristina their medical histories. Ivy, Frankie's sister, is also recovering from a procedure. Lincoln is going to need a transplant and he has about a week to survive until donor heart arrives. Cristina assures the parents that they're aggressively looking at other options.
Cristina tells Hunt and Arizona she doesn't want to make a big deal out of her nomination. They try to divert her in another direction, but she goes through the main doors and everyone is standing there waiting to surprise her. Hunt says it was Meredith's idea.
Webber is so proud of the work the doctors are doing, he tells the residents to soak it all in. Stephanie is bummed she's working with Bailey, who is just staring at a computer screen trying to figure out a cure for her immuno-deficient patient. After Webber leaves, Shane imparts his wisdom to Stephanie, saying that it was "like that with me and Yang at first, too," he says, adding, "now look at us." Stephanie has had enough and pulls the "swap monkey" card -- a deal they made last week when Shane asked Stephanie to watch the conduit kids because he was afraid he had the virus that was going around. She forces him to work with Bailey.
Meredith and Leah get consent from their kidney patients. Keith Kolber is getting a kidney from an HIV-infected person, Marty. Keith also has HIV. Marty hesitates for a moment when he hears that 0.06 percent of kidney donors die during the surgery. But he consents.
Derek and Callie set Jo up on a brain scanning machine to see different parts of her brain working. It turns out, her reactions to the beach and a kitten are the same as shark, but when Callie gets a page about a broken arm, Jo's pleasure center glows green. Callie is excited that she got Jo excited about ortho.
Bailey is looking at the computer screen when Shane comes in. It sounds like she's getting annoyed with the attention Cristina and Meredith are getting, nothing that she trained them.
Cristina is calling Stanford, trying to get an experimental treatment for Lincoln. But before she can get an answer, Lincoln crashes.
Cristina can't do much to help Lincoln, and the FDA won't let Stanford release the experimental heart. They have to wait for a call from a donor.
Meredith comes to get Marty for the kidney transplant, but he says he can't do it. He says he's scared he'll be one of the 0.06 percent. But he hasn't told Keith. We next see Meredith telling Keith that the results were wrong and Marty is not a match for the transplant. Marty cries and apologizes to Keith, who says it's ironic that after fighting through the worst of his HIV infection he's going to wind up dying of kidney failure.
Derek scans Callie's brain and finds that she's not "happy." She's not responding to the kitten pictures. She's smiling and acting happy, but her brain scan contradicts this.
Alex checks out Braden who isn't interested in playing checkers or chess with Alex. He says he wants to play with someone his own age. Braden rams his remote-control car into the plastic bubble. When Alex warns him that he could break the plastic, Braden mutters that that's the point.
Bailey asks Meredith to pass along her congratulations to Cristina, saying she has to focus on her work.
Ivy, Frankie and Lincoln's parents are getting impatient with their children's progress.
April makes a show of eating meatloaf every day of the week. She says Jackson refuses to eat leftovers because he thinks it's "despressing." Cristina doesn't want to talk about her Harper Avery award nomination.
The residents talk about the Harper Avery award and Leah is looking for a picture of Ellis Grey, who won it at a relatively young age. Leah gets a page and takes Shane with her.
We next see Meredith telling Bailey that Marty felt bad about backing out of the kidney transplant, but they told Keith that Marty wasn't a match. Now Marty is back in but Meredith needs Bailey's advice on what to do. Bailey mocks Meredith for getting emotionally involved -- a rookie mistake. Bailey leads them back into the room and tells Keith that Meredith misread the labs and that they're actually a perfect match. She continues rubbing salt into Meredith's wound and tells her she's "substance over flash" -- suggesting Meredith is the opposite. She also suggests she can find another doctor to take Meredith's place.
Jo and Alex chat as they walk through the halls, with Joe trying to convince Alex that it's OK for him to be considering joining a private practice for the money. Alex sees Braden's remote-controlled car in the hall and starts looking around for the boy. He's not in his bed. Alex finds him playing tag with other kids and orders everyone to step away from Braden in order to avoid endangering him.
Braden is placed on a gurney with a plastic covering. Frankie asks her mom whether her brother Lincoln is going to die. Arizona comes over and says she has good news.
Hunt is giddy about having convinced the folks at Stanford to send the experimental heart, but weather is stopping planes from leaving San Francisco.
Stephanie raises to the O.R., trying to catch Shane before he goes in to work with Bailey on the kidney transplant. She calls "swap monkey," but he goes into the O.R. and tells her she's too late. Webber, who watched all this with Baliey, asks Bailey what a swap monkey is, and she simply explains, "It's when you want what someone else has."
Jo finds a private jet that could bring the experimental heart, but it's $25,000. Jackson says they'll need board approval, but after some pressuring everyone, Jackson just hands over his credit card and says he'll work it out with the board later.
Callie is still hooked up to the brain scanner and talks about when she fell in love with ortho, but her scan is still not showing her as happy, but depressed. Meredith walks in with their baby and Callie's "pleasure center" lights up. Derek jokes that Callie has a crush on Meredith, but Callie realizes it's not Meredith -- it's the baby.
Webber presses Bailey on whether she's jealous of Cristina and she finally admits it's true. He tells her she's working on some groundbreaking stuff, but she isn't convinced.
The residents watch from the gallery as Cristina prepares for her surgery.
Webber is happy as the kidney transplant seems to have worked, but Bailey scoffs. Webber talks about what a mystery the HIV virus used to be, and it seems to give Bailey an idea. She repeats, "I understand how HIV works." She calls it a "perfectly designed virus." She wonders if she could deactivate the virus and gets excited, saying she needs to do some research and some coffee.
Arizona and Cristina operate together while the gallery is packed. Derek whispers to Meredith that no one can tell she's seething with jealousy. She wryly admits she's jealous.
Alex gives Braden a modified version of his remote-controlled car, with a camera attached so Braden can tour the entire pediatrics floor. Outside the room, Alex tells Jo that he called and told the private practice guy he's interested.
Bailey finds Cristina and congratulates her. Cristina blows it off, but Bailey tells her she taught her better than that, and to look at someone and smile when she's given congratulations. Cristina does this.
Leah tells Webber she's looking for a picture of Ellis Grey with her first Harper Avery, and he tells her it was in 1988. He pulls the picture from his wallet and tells Leah it was a great night.
Cristina updates Lincoln's parents and they apologize for having doubted her.
April gets home and Jackson has clean underwear waiting for her. He's been doing laundry that she hasn't have time to do. He tells her about the pending $25,000 charge on the credit card. She says his spending habits are baffling.
Outside the hospital, Callie tells Arizona she wants another baby. Arizona says she does, too. They smile and hug.
Hunt and Cristina drink together in the ventilation room where they used to make out. Hunt tells her he thinks she's going to win the Harper Avery. They toast.
