- We open with Rachel, Kurt, Sam and Blaine taking part in a candlelight vigil for someone named Russ.
Rachel asks Sidney for some leeway with her NYADA schedule. Her Mid-Winter Critique is a big deal and she needs some time. He concedes, but says this is the only time he'll do it.
Sam asks Mercedes why she broke up with him. She says it was because she didn't know who she was. He thought it was over before it started and thinks there is still chemistry. They start making out.
Mercedes asks Rachel about Russ. They tell her he was a neighbor who was beaten almost to death because he is gay. Mercedes is caught playing footsie with Sam, but she denies it.
Sam tells Mercedes he wants them to go public. He throws a coin into the river for luck. Sam tries to convince her they are perfect for one another. She wants to think about things and wants them to take things slow. After he leaves she sings "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."
Mercedes tells her friends and back-up singers about Sam. They thinks it's strange she's dating a guy from home so soon. Sam shows up and meets them. He's nervous and strange, and Mercedes seems uncomfortable.
Rachel and Blaine perform "Broadway Baby" for the Critique. Tibideaux isn't happy they performed as a duet, which wasn't the assignment. She gives them a chance to perform solo later in the week or they fail.
Rachel asks Tibideaux if she can reschedule for after her opening night. She says no, and says Rachel's professors are telling her she's underperforming. They argue over the importance of NYADA for Rachel. Tibideaux thinks she needs her degree because she doesn't take direction well. Rachel disagrees and quits school.
Mercedes' friends tell her they think the black-white thing is too much to overcome with her and Sam. They also think she'll alienate potential fans by dating a white man.
Mercedes tell Sam she can't be with him. She tells him she doesn't know any black female artists who date white men. She doesn't think that's the statement she wants to make.
Kurt tells Rachel he thinks she's crazy for quitting school. Rachel thinks because of Funny Girl she doesn't she need school, but Kurt thinks she should keep her options open. She gets mad at Kurt and says some condescending things before storming out.
Kurt goes to the defense of a kid getting beaten in an alley. They turn on him and start pummeling Kurt before running off.
Sam tells Blaine about getting dumped. Blaine gets a call, then word starts getting passed to all the NYC friends.
They rush to the hospital and are told that Kurt is badly hurt, but will be fine. He has multiple fractures and is on heavy painkillers. Blaine starts to sing "Not While I'm Around," which he uses as his solo for Mid-Winter Critique.
Mercedes tells Sam she's upset that took his race into consideration when deciding whether or not to date him. She sings "Colorblind."
Kurt wakes up and finds an angry Burt yelling at him for putting himself in a dangerous situation. He thinks his son should have called the cops. Kurt is surprised that such a thing is happening in New York City.
Kurt and Blaine go back to the place where flowers are being laid in honor of Russ. Blaine says he heard Russ has woken from his coma.
An emotional Rachel tells Kurt she's glad he's okay. She's still leaving school. Sam and Mercedes arrive and announce they're dating. Rachel tells them Kurt's Mid-Winter Critique is coming up in a few days.
Kurt's Mid-Winter Critique performance is "I'm Still Here." He gets a standing ovation.
