I had never heard of the artist My Panda Shall Fly (also known as Suren Seneviratne) and I confess that when I started this short film, I did not even realize that this was the name of the artist; I was actually drawn to click by the odd title and the interest to find out what it was. Turns out to be a sort of music video where we follow Seneviratne through a typical day of getting showered, going to the shops, hanging out with his wife Veronica, doing a DJ set, and waiting in line for the toilet; pretty much all of which he does without ever breaking eye contact with the camera.
As an idea I like the awkwardness and think it plays well; problem is that it doesn't do enough to justify being the whole short film. The diversity of the idea is limited and, although some of it is amusing in its oddity, mostly it is not as funny or weird as it could have been. It isn't helped by the actual music being quite fast paced and busy, because this makes the on-screen awkwardness feel slower. I guess this juxtaposition was the point, but when the material already feels like it is not delivering much, having it feel slower doesn't add as much as I would have liked.
To a point there is a nice sense of awkwardness which contrasts with the music, but it doesn't do enough with the idea to really carry it the length of the short film.
