Every month I’ll highlight a comfy series with low stakes, calm vibes and characters I wish I knew in real life. Are you tired of winter’s cold, gray skies? This month’s pick takes us out to the Japanese countryside for summertime fun complete with lazy days, buzzing locusts and… calligraphy?! That’s right, it’s Barakamon ! “Barakamon” in the dialect of the Goto Islands means “cheerful and energetic person.” Tokyo native and master calligrapher Seishuu Handa finds himself on Fukue Island, which is populated by such happy-go-lucky people – but none more so than the six-year-old Naru. Will this fish out of water sink or swim on the Goto Islands? Opening Number “Rashisa” by Super Beaver kicks off the summer vibes. Energetic electric guitars and upbeat vocals bring up the tempo immediately.
