It has been twenty years since Britpop entered the lexicon as British pop music emerged from its dance craze and bands took inspiration from music of the 1960s and 1970s (Beatles, Slade, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Faces, The Kinks, Madness, The Specials) and retooled it for the 1990s when it was clear political change was in the air.

Of course some acts lasted less well than others. We all remember the war of words and singles between Oasis and Blur but this programmes reminds of songs from Elastica, Sleeper, Menswear, Suede and many others who gave British music a swagger in the mid 1990s and updated its rock and roll image.
