Dentist Alan Barnett's wife Judith, who was starting a new life, is killed at her gym, where the knife of an ex-con junkie is found. As Maura is away, wrestling with college social activities, her deputy Susie Chang is formally in charge of the forensics, with her favorite method, visualization by scale model of crime scene, luckily corrected by informal video-coaching from Maura. The MO proves an intricate one-off murder weapon and cover-up, almost the perfect murder, for a sad motive.
