Christian Jeune, Nansun Shi to judge winner of Purin Award at Southeast Asian script lab.
Cannes’ director of film department Christian Jeune, Hong Kong producer Nansun Shi and Kini Kim, former Cj Entertainment head of international, have been appointed jury members for the Southeast Asia Fiction Film Lab (Seafic).
The three industry figures will decide the winner of Seafic’s Purin Award, which comes with a cash prize of $15,000, after reading the five selected filmmakers’ latest scripts and hearing their final pitches in person.
In addition to the Purin Award, sponsored by the Purin Foundation, Seafic has also partnered with two other organisations to hand out the Seafic-tfl Award and the Open Sea Fund Award.
The winner of the Seafic-tfl Award, selected by TorinoFilmLab artistic director Matthieu Darras, will attend this year’s edition of TorinoFilmLab Meeting Event (November 24-26).

Hot off the announcement that it will have its world premiere at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard competition, we get our first look at Apprentice, a Malay-language execution drama set in Singapore. Newcomer Fir Rahman stars as Aiman, a prison warden who is transferred to a maximum security facility, where he serves under the tutelage of veteran hangman Rahim, played by Wan Hanafi Su (Bunohan, Men Who Save The World). While Aiman develops a friendship with Rahim, secrets from their past throw their whole situation into conflict. Directed by Boo Junfeng, whose first feature Sandcastle debuted at Cannes Critic Week back in 2010, Apprentice has already been picked up for release in France, Hong Kong, China, Mexico and Turkey, and should secure further distribution...

Films from 81 countries have been subitted for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
The Us Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed that 81 countries have submitted films for consideration for this year’s Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film.
Paraguay is the only first-time entrant.
The figure is down on last year, when a record 83 countries submitted features and the eventual winner was Polish feature Ida, directed by Pawel Pawlikowski.
Nine finalists will be shortlisted, which will be whittled down to five nominees that will be announced on Jan 14, 2016.
The 88th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Feb 28, 2016, televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Iffr reveals Big Screen Awards nominees and the complete line-up for its Bright Future and Spectrum strands, including world premieres from the Us, China and the Netherlands.
Second Coming, starring Idris Elba and Nadine Marshall, has been named as one of 10 films up for the Big Screen Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) (Jan 21 - Feb 1).
The UK film, written and directed by Debbie Tucker Green, will be vying for a prize of €10,000 ($12,000) awarded specifically to support theatrical distribution of the film in The Netherlands

This morning the Toronto Film Festival added several more films to their lineup including the world premiere of Thomas McCarthy's The Cobbler which stars Adam Sandler as a New York City cobbler who, disenchanted with the grind of daily life, stumbles upon a magical heirloom that allows him to step into the lives of his customers and see the world in a new way. The film co-stars Method Man, Ellen Barkin, Melonie Diaz, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi and Dustin Hoffman. Additionally, Sundance standouts Infinity Polar Bear and Laggies starring Keira Knightley and Chloe Grace Moretz were added to the Gala selection.
