We're all over the midwest and south tonight as Juliette's got growing pains, Will takes a walk in the park, Rayna and look go commercial, Layla has another man in her sights, and Avery and Gunnar get some big, very similar news.
First up are Rayna and Luke who are each on their respective tours, taking them away from their families, her in Austin, him in Chicago. When Daphne calls missing her mom Rayna arranges for them, and Luke's son, to join them on a set of a commercial they are shooting the next day in Idaho.
On the private plane ride with Luke they all act like entitled brats and when the commercial demands their time Daphne tells Rayna she sucks and runs off. Luke tells her the girls will get used to them being away and Rayna says she doesn't want them to get used to it. She apologizes to Daphne, reassures her that she loves her and no matter how much they're apart nothing will change that. She tells the girls they can do something fun after. They snap a family pic in the trailer on the commercial and post it to Twitter and then go bowling. Fans try to set upon them at the bowling alley but Luke holds them back and everyone starts to have fun until Maddie shows Rayna a tabloid photo of herself with the headline "Plain Jane daughter.' Rayna says this is garbage and she will try to protect her from it but Maddie needs to ignore and know that she is beautiful and she should just be her best self.
Teddy, meanwhile, is sulking that he is not considered "fun." And in the course of Jeff Fordham trying to butter him up so he can get back at Rayna by signing the girls, Jeff tells him Rayna doesn't have a monopoly on fun and that Teddy himself can also have a good time and he invites him to a party and a bromance is born.
When the girls return to Nashville Teddy takes them for a "beauty day" and allows Daphne to get her ears pierced and Maddie to get highlights, so she can be "her best self." They are both giddy. When the girls Facetime with Rayna and she sees this she is mad it happened without her and she calls Teddy. He explains things are going to happen when she's away and she can't get mad at him. He then hangs up and macks on chicks with Jeff Fordham at his party. He meets one who takes a shine to him. When he walks her back to her car she has a ticket. He says he will take care of it and she kisses him and he clearly likes it.
Back at her show, Rayna confides to new buddy and opening act Sadie Stone that he mother was also away a lot when she was a child and she never expected to repeat that pattern. She is told it's time to go on. Sadie asks a tearful Rayna if she needs a minute. Rayna says no, collects herself, and gets on with the show.
Juliette is burning the candle at all ends, shooting the movie and performing tour dates all while trying to hide her growing baby bump. Emily can't believe she's doing it all and that she hasn't told Avery. So, she texts Avery. He gets the text while performing roadside community service and freaks out and tries to call her back but the supervisor of the crew takes his phone.
At the crafts services table Juliette confides to co-star Noah that she's.worried about the sex scene and asks for tips about being naked on film. He says he likes to do push ups. This is not helpful. When Avery finally gets his phone back he sees that Juliette has not returned his calls. So he storms the set of her movie and bangs on her trailer door when she won't see him, hollering about her being pregnant and wanting to know if it's really his. (Noah overhears this but no one else seems to.) Glen comes out and shuts him down and sends him away. Avery just wants to make sure it's his not Jeff's. Glen is taken aback by this little tidbit but says Juliette says it's his and he believes her. Avery wants to know what Juliette wants him to do. Glen says Juliette was raised in chaos and he won't let Avery's chaos around her and tells him to leave.
Juliette goes to shoot the sex scene and is clearly nervous about the angles. Noah has her back and suggests to the director they shoot her from the back with her on top so the front and side angles are not visible. She climbs on him and he says her secret is safe with him and that it barely shows.
Later, Noah shows up at one of her gigs. He says he knows she has a complicated relationship with her ex but she is fun to be around which is rare in his business and wants to show her around. Later as he watches her perform from the side of the stage he can tell she is in distress. At one point she turns and it's clear she can't catch her breath. She leaves the stage mid-song and Zoey-- who also knows her secret-- takes it upon herself to start singing lead. Noah grabs a breathless Juliette who looks up at the video screens and she sees Zoey singing her song and promptly faints.
Over in Chicago Luke, Deacon, Deacon's back-up singer gal pal, and Will are celebrating with the rest of musicians and crew a good show in the Windy City and a day off between shows the next day so Luke can go shoot his car commercial with Rayna. Will is very supportive of Luke and Deacon tells him to stop being such a suck up. His lady friend scolds him for being a wet blanket on Will's fun since he is young.
The ubiquitous Jeff is also there and asks if Luke is ready to put out his new album. Luke says he just has to.finish the mix and sequence the tracks. Jeff notices Will talking to someone and asks Luke who it is. He tells him it's his trainer who is a good guy. Jeff knows better.
Jeff catches up with Will later and says it's time to drop a new single and hopes he can do more radio promo. Will is all fired up to do whatever Jeff wants. Jeff also says that's it's great that the trainer is helping out and making Will happy but he hands him a non-disclosure agreement to have the guy sign. Later, Will asks Luke about having people close to you signing NDAs. Luke says it's standard in his organization and "If it ain't love, it's business."
When Will presents the trainer with the NDA he is, predictably offended, thinking they were having a real relationship. Will says they aren't. The trainer dumps the NDA in the trash and stalks off just as Deacon is walking by and Will pretends that he has fired the trainer. Deacon starts getting an inkling.
Later, Will goes cruising in the park and is beaten savagely and robbed in a gay bashing incident. Deacon agains sees him when he comes back to the hotel. He goes to him and tries to get him to see a doctor. Will declines. Deacon allows him to blow him off but basically says he knows what's up and tells him to stay out of the parks because he has had friends get into trouble.
At showtime Luke is livid that Will planned to go on looking like that. Deacon tells him to just let them put make-up on him. Luke allows this. Deacon again extends an olive branch to Will saying he can talk to him if he needs to. Will says he probably won't but gives his heartfelt thanks at the offer.
Back in Nashville, Layla is making googly eyes at her record producer. Ever present Jeff tells her to shut that business down and to hurry up and finish her record and do a better job of selling the songs about forever love that he picked for her. She says she isn't feeling those songs and their deal was she get a gold record and that's expensive. She asks to contribute her own writing. Jeff scoffs that that would require her having talent. So Layla goes home to write, hits a wall, rifles through the medicine cabinet for pills, gives up, slams it shut breaking the mirror and cutting her hand in the process. Layla's getting loopy!
Deacon, in addition to reaching out to Will is heating things up with his galpal, who makes the mistake of showing him the "Layna" family Twitter pic. He gets angry and stalks off but she ends up turning his mood around. It doesn't escape Luke's notice that she is spending time with Deacon and he criticizes her for this. Zoey Facetimes with Gunnar complaining she doesn't get enough stage time, not yet knowing that her "All About Eve" opportunity will be presenting itself shortly. Gunnar tells her that Kylie is leaving town and he is going to meet up with her unless it bothers her. Zoey says it's fine.
He goes to see her and is surprised to meet her 9 1/2 year old son Myka.Hmmmm...
Meanwhile, Avery has come to Gunnar with his news freaking out about what to do and seems to think leaving Juliette and the baby alone may be best for all. Which gets Gunnar to thinking about Myka and how old he is. He goes to Kylie and says if he has family he needs to know, is Myka his? Yup, he is.
Over in her writing room, Scarlet works on song about enjoying danger but keeps being interrupted by a homeless man outside yelling about pizza. She finally goes out and offers him some food and learns that his name is Terry, he is probably mentally ill in some way but seems friendly and mostly harmless. He takes the sandwich but says he's not a beggar and wants to give her something in return so he asks about her song and begins singing it perfectly and then fills in the lyric that she has been stuck on. He says he hopes hat helps.
