Review (with Spoilers)

I was truly in love with this episode. Daphne was going to go to jail, Bay was going to go off to LA to be with Emmett, Regina was going to go off to Hawaii, and there was a sense that everything was right with the show. And while you had to cry since characters like Sheree and Natalie were likely not going to be around much more, at least you got a decent goodbye. However, rather than keep the good times rolling the writers decide to throw a completely unnecessary, last minute curve ball which truly enraged me.

Topic 1: My Debt to Karma – Daphne (Featuring Regina)

While Wes says he won't press charged against Daphne, we are reminded he isn't the only stakeholder in the East Riverside project who can press charges. Thus leading Regina and him to have a bit of an argument, especially when she thinks he decided to renege and press charges since she didn't take well to him expressing his affections for her. Making it seem to us that Daphne, very likely, would be heading to prison. Something I was hoping would happen since she really has hit a low point and never mind the restitution she owes other characters, I think seeing her be truly punished is something fans need as well.

Topic 2: Graduation Day – Daphne, Bay, and Travis

And while Daphne seems ready to turn herself in, rather than delay the inevitable with a trial, she still has the commencement speech to do and she has to try to be this honor student everyone thinks she is, while prepping for the title of "felon" to hang over her for the rest of her life. A title which means no med school, 3 months to 3 years of her life taken, and everyone mostly leaving her behind. Though, with Bay by her side, treating her like the sister she thinks of her as, she pushes Daphne to do her speech and during the speech you get a few touching moments dealing with how Daphne met Emmett, how she discovered the now closing Carlton, and she thanks all those who have fought with her, cried with her, and got her to this point.

But, she isn't alone when it comes to thanking people. Travis' mom, Karen, after being non-existent, for what must have been 1-2 years, shows up to his graduation likely thanks to Emmett. And though she was a real piece of work when we met her, seeing her there for Travis' graduation, combined with Daphne's speech, left me crying so hard. For really, while it is sad Angelo died, and Daphne has to go to prison, perhaps the saddest storyline, to me anyway, is between Bay and Regina hardly having a relationship, and Travis thus far seeming to have a rather indifferent family. I mean, once he mentioned talking to his brother, earlier in this season, but outside of that it seems like he had little to no contact with his blood relations. You can see though, with his mom showing up, even if she is alone, that he is happy to see her. Also, with her learning sign language, oh my god you can see how thankful he and Melody are to see she has finally put effort into adapting to her son's needs. Both in terms of his need to communicate and have her there for him.

Topic 3: That's What Sisters Are For – Daphne & Bay

So, with the graduation ceremony over, and prison weighing too heavy on Daphne to go out and have one last day of fun, she foregoes post- graduation parties to turn herself in. Something Bay joins to, originally, show support. What unfortunately happens though is Bay decides to take all the blame, ruining all the work and effort she put into securing her ability to follow Emmett to California. And with this you have the part of the episode which ruined a nearly perfect episode. If just because it means Daphne got away with her escalating rash actions once more and was bailed out.

For, to me, prison wouldn't have just been good for the story, but a real reality check for Daphne. After all between her issues with her boss when she worked at a restaurant, then Jace, then Nacho, you can see Daphne is getting more and more destructive and I am personally sick of someone swooping in to save her. She needs to actually take responsibility and be punished! And not with some rinky-dink community service sentence, of which she ends up meeting cute guys, dating one, and then getting a job. No, she should have went to prison, lost her chance at med-school, worked with Melody on her deaf program, and then take things from there. But I guess since maybe there wasn't enough ideas, or investment, in Bay's story, it was decided sending her to jail to save Daphne's behind would have been a better choice.
