Hidden Diamond? (Not Quite)
southdavid3 April 2021
More alphabetical trawling of the Disney Plus app lands me on Disney Channel Original Movie "Bad Hair Day" - which despite the pretty horrible title and poster was actually alright. (relatively speaking).

On the day of prom, technical whizzkid Monica (Laura Marano) discovers that her hair has reacted to the various products she's put in it, her dress has melted, and her shoes have broken. Before she can set about fixing these issues and becoming the prom queen her polling data suggests she'll be - a former police detective, Liz (Leigh-Allyn Baker) knocks on her door and enquires about a piece of costume duty that she owns. Monica agrees to hand over the jewellery, but only if Liz provides her with a lift for the day, to sort out her problems before prom.

So, this is 'alright' in the sense I was anticipating an unwatchable disaster. That it makes sense (kind of) and actually has a story is, in that case, a big plus. It's a slight story admittedly and one that relies on the odd contrivance to get through it, but I've sat through a lot worse. The other thing that makes it watchable is that both the leads are good and that their chemistry together really works. It's a massively familiar relationship, obviously. An unlikely antagonistic relationship, where the pair bond across the day and with a threat to both of them and end up almost as mother and daughter. Their pairing makes it work, I think you could have made exactly the same script with two different actresses and it wouldn't have worked half as well as it does. I also quite liked that Monica was both the preppy prom queen fashionista and a tech nerd with an offer from MIT, whereas previously I suspect many films would have separated them into lead and "friend" roles.

I mean, we're still only talking that it's good relative to other DCOM's that Disney Plus has forced me to watch, not that it's actually good. It's pretty cheap looking and has some questionable acting from some of the supporting cast.

I wouldn't recommend you hunted it down, but if, for some reason, you had to watch an original Disney Channel movie, you can do a lot worse.

Totally passionate...

It may sound a little misogynistic, but I love little girls' films, female subjects interest me, mother and daughter relationship, here everything is very cute, portrayed in a light, fun and intelligent way... With an investigative, comical, exaggeratedly silly touch, but totally passionate...

When it's a long day filled with a series problems, but a short day to fix them all.
Reno-Rangan4 June 2017
The 96th Disney Channel Original Movie. I am watching it quite late, because I'm not a regular follower of the Disney Channel films, but have seen many of them and I had enjoyed. Surely the target audience for this is the kids and mostly the girls. But I liked it as well. The story wise, it is simple like just one day event. A high school girl preparing for the prom night, wakes up in the morning, finds her hair got messed up. Now she has to fix it and the problem is the appointment in the saloon and how to reach there since she has no vehicle or the license.

There's another side of the story. A pretended cop joins her in the quest in return a favour. So it's not just girl stuff, there are some actions. Running, chasing, theft, boyfriend trouble, the films have all the ingredient to enjoy the whole 90 minutes. Good casting and the performances, but I find some comedies are so silly. For a television and aiming for minors, everything looks fair. Just because we're being adult, we expect realism. If you throw away your that mindset while watching it, you would surely have a nice time. My rating might look only a just above average, but that's not how I felt. This is a nice film, like most of the DCOM. So go for it.

Details don't add up
peacelovejhd30 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Although the general plot was okay, the details were not well thought out. For example, when the "FBI agent" comes, she says that she is an American agent, however they continuously use the term "eh" throughout the movie which is not an American term. Also, things like the dress getting burnt from the steam of the bathroom and completely disforming seem a little off. Because of all of the details in the movie that don't quite work out, I was confused and wondering what was really going on. In the end it works out in a cheesy ending like all Disney movies do, except this one was much less satisfying. The next time I'm looking for my Disney movie fix, I'll scroll pass Bad Hair Day. I do not suggest this movie to anyone, big or small, as it was just not interesting nor worth my time.

This movie is terrible
brookenichole-980542 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love Laura Marano and Leigh Allyn Baker, so I thought this movie would be amazing. Unfortunately, I was wrong. The story is dull and not funny. The characters are annoying, especially Laura Marano's. The whole movie I was bored out of my mind. Not worth the watch.

Better than average DCOM
jonathanrspalding17 February 2015
DC had been promoting this movie for a long time. Disney movies are often hit or miss and if you are not an eleven year old girl they often are not enjoyable. However, I thought this movie was very good for TV.

The plot was generally believable. The two main characters were well acted and had a great chemistry. The movie was well written and the plot was more solid than most kid movies. Also the villain was believable as a real criminal. The banter between the kid and cop actually was funny and kept me watching a rather formulaic cop/kid movie.

The movie should have ended about five minutes sooner than it did, but it had less of the sappiness that most DCOMs have. The movie reminded me more of the old, old Disney movies from the 60's and 70's such as That Darn Cat, which I think it is a good thing.

Hence, if nothing better is on I would recommend it for watching one of the five hundred times they play it in the next year.

One stupid pawnbroker
bkoganbing22 February 2015
A teen looking for approval and a disgraced cop are forced to work together to recover a missing necklace, catch a notorious jewel thief and save this cop's job. Laura Marano of Austin&Ally and Leigh-Alyn Baker of Good Luck Charlie make the unlikely partners in Bad Hair Day. By the way said day is also the day of the senior prom where Marano desperately wants to be prom queen.

This film is the first of Disney's offerings to its teen and adolescent market. Laura Marano is not too different from her Austin&Ally character of a good kid who wants approval be it audience or peer. As for Baker she's got some good comic ability in her which was often on display in Good Luck Charlie.

Christian Campbell plays the international jewel thief and he looks like he was having a good time taking small bites from the furniture. One thing totally spoiled it for me. The story has Campbell losing possession of the valuable necklace that Baker was supposed to be guarding and Marano winds up with in a roundabout fashion. It gets to her because someone pawned it. I have to tell you that when that necklace came to the pawn shop it must have been one stupid pawnbroker who got it. I can't believe he thought it was costume jewelry and let Marano have it. In real life he'd either go broke or be laughed out of the business.

Still sub par though it is Bad Hair Day has its amusing moments.

Fun, smart, sassy, family friendly
mdoherty-239-67529914 February 2015
Fun, fast, empowering, emotional ...movie for all ages to enjoy. Specifically like how they tackled stereotypes ( prom queen but also tech savvy, male nurses, self image) without losing the comedic side. Laura Marano and Leigh Allen Baker were a fabulous team with amazing comedic timing. My 2 kids, myself, and husband all sat and watched it together and really enjoyed it. Any movie that can keep the family together gets my 2 thumbs up. They've already asked if we can watch it again. Most Disney Channel movies are fluffy and I can barely tolerate....not this one. There were car chases for my son, prom dresses for my daughter, and tons of laughs for the adults. The music was great too. Well done Disney!

Has almost nothing to do with hair.

The hair is only a side plot, but they named the movie after it!

bad day all around
SnoopyStyle30 August 2020
Monica (Laura Marano) is a high school senior. She uses social media and her programming skills to be popular in her quest to be prom queen. Her day starts with bad hair after a full day of hair poll. Private investigator Liz (Leigh-Allyn Baker) comes looking for an antique neckless which Monica had bought from a pawn shop. Monica is willing to trade it for a driver.

Neither of the characters are appealing. They try to be a funny duo and sometimes their bickering hits a good spot. The mother daughter bit is kind of funny. I wish for a better setup. With a different premise, this duo could work. It's a slightly above average Disney TV.

I wanted second part of this movie.
sanchuj24 May 2017
In this story a girl, Monica's hair, dress and shoes are ruined for the prom. The only thing not ruined is a necklace which she bought from a pawn shop. Monica meets a woman, Liz who wants the necklace which Monica has. I think this is a very funny movie. I wanted second part of this movie. I think everyone should go for it.
