Exclusive: In a preemptive outright screen rights purchase that sources peg at mid-seven figures plus performance bonuses, Don Winslow’s upcoming crime trilogy epic that starts with City On Fire has been taken off the table by Sony Pictures and Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures.
Deadline tipped this one as a hot book project last week, and it didn’t take long to generate one of the biggest book deals of the year so far. Sony Pictures and Gabler’s 3000 Pictures (a partnership between Sony and HarperCollins) has acquired three complete novels that tell an epic crime saga. City On Fire, which follows the template of Homer’s The Iliad, will be published by William Morrow in September. The followup, City of Dreams, will be published a year later, and the third installment, City in Ashes, will be published September, 2023.
The Story Factory’s Shane Salerno will produce the films.

“Homeroom” begins with a somewhat inchoate energy. In this regard, Peter Nicks’ engaging documentary about Oakland High School’s senior class of 2020 aptly mimics the start of a school year. Students haven’t yet found their rhythms. Everything feels a little amped. The kids seem to rush around reestablishing old bonds, forging new ones and, for the seniors on whom the film turns its gaze, facing more fully what’s to come.
Sundance’s U.S. Documentary competition jury presented its editing award for to “Homeroom” MVPs Kristina Motwani and Rebecca Adorno. The film swirls with the buzz of classrooms, lunchrooms and hallways before finding a deeply attentive focus once things so profoundly shift for the kids, the nation, the world. Because the students and the filmmakers of this cinéma vérité documentary had to reckon with a year unlike any other.

Black Narcissus, the 1947 film based on author Rumer Godden’s 1939 novel, is getting a substantially stylized update in the realm of peak television by way of FX’s November-scheduled miniseries. With Gemma Arterton as its headliner, the miniseries will showcase a surreal tale of eroticism, darkness and futility centered on a group of nuns in a Himalayan palace.
Amanda Coe (The Trial of Christine Keeler) wrote the adaptation script for the three-part miniseries, which was directed by Charlotte Bruus Christensen (Between Us). Interestingly, the element of stunning Himalayan cinematography will be prominent in the FX miniseries, just as with the 1947 film, which, directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburgher, won two Oscars in 1948, one of which was for cinematography. Indeed, Christensen was a longtime cinematographer who only recently transitioned to behind the camera.
On that note, check out the trailer for FX’s Black Narcissus just below.

Iryna Tsilyk’s film has emerged as the big winner at the Polish gathering, while other victors included Dorota Proba’s Between Us and Maciej Cuske’s The Whale From Lorino. The 17th Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival has handed out its awards during a ceremony that was held on 10 September at Teatr Studio in Warsaw. The Earth Is Blue as an Orange by Iryna Tsilyk emerged as the big winner, as it was awarded the Grand Prix – Bank Millennium Award. However, the ceremony doesn’t mark the end of this edition of the festival, as more screenings are happening in Warsaw, Wroclaw, Katowice, Poznan, Bydgoszcz and Lublin, and the gathering will end its physical run in Gdynia on 18 September. One day later, the online edition – which can be found at mdag.pl – will start unspooling, and it will run until 4 October. The Earth Is Blue as an...

With so many streaming services to choose from, it can often be difficult to find the right one to spend your hard-earned dough on. That being said, Hulu has remained among the most exciting and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix, really cementing itself as one of the most appealing options out there in recent years thanks to its collection of original content and very, very deep library of licensed films.

Matt Damon reteams with Ford v Ferrari director James Mangold for The Force, a movie about NYPD corruption and dirty cops.
James Mangold has a knack for reteaming with his best leading men to phenomenal results. Working with Hugh Jackman on The Wolverine paved the way for Logan, one of the finest superhero films ever produced, and 3:10 to Yuma in turn led to Mangold and Christian Bale reteaming for Ford v Ferrari, a slick drama for adults that just got nominated for the Oscars’ Best Picture. That leaves us intrigued about the possibility of his next project: a Don Winslow adaptation, The Force, that would pair him again with the Ford v Ferrari co-lead, Matt Damon.
News of the project came out of Deadline Wednesday, which reported that Mangold and Damon have set the project up at 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox). This is...

Lodged between the meat market of the Sundance Film Festival every January and the prestige of the Cannes Film Festival every May, the Tribeca Film Festival is an odd duck. Each and every April for the last 16 years, Tribeca has showcased a wife variety of (mostly) independent movies, many of which struggle to see the light of day. Still, there’s always a gem or two in the lineup, and even the occasional Academy Award nominee. With screenings for press beginning before this month is out, now is a solid time to take a look at some of what Tribeca has to offer for 2018. First up, it’s worth noting some of the prior Tribeca titles that have struck my fancy. Last year, it was the grouping of Blame, The Boy Downstairs, and especially Flower that highlighted a rather week lineup. The year before, 2016 featured Between Us, Dean, Don’t Think Twice,...

Shot in June in Los Angeles, The Force features Olivia Thirlby and Ben Feldman in the pole position as newly married urbanites with a faint degree of amnesia with a supporting cast familiar indie face offerings of Adam Goldberg, Analeigh Tipton, Scott Haze, Lesley Ann Warren, Betsy Brandt, John Ross Bowie, Jon Heder, Alison Sudol and filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich. Latin American/Los Angeles transplanted AFI alumni visual artist and painter Rafael Palacio Illingworth got his start with another relationship-themed dramedy with the micro budgeted Macho (2009) and in-between features he filmed some commercial spots and put out a pair of shorts with one bringing him to the Venice Film Festival.
