Characters Become Too Unlikable
larrys316 June 2017
In this relationship drama, Dianne (Olivia Thirlby) and Henry (Ben Feldman) have been living together for six years. However, when serious thought is given to marriage they will begin to engage in very destructive actions that certainly will put everything they've built up in jeopardy.

The filmmaker here, Rafael Palacio Illingworth, I imagine is asking the audience to somehow emotionally connect and feel for these characters. However for me, they became so unlikable that I wasn't able to really care about them.

Look for a number of known actors throughout the movie, some with cameos while others more substantial roles. There's lots of raw language, some nudity, as well as some explicit sex scenes and references in the film.

Overall, as mentioned, I could never connect with these characters and thus did not really enjoy the movie. Also, the rather ambiguous ending did not help very much either.

Impeccable casting, still a head-scratcher @ the end...

Warning: Spoilers
A beautiful genre-type movie; for which there was no point in making...as far as I can see. This movie is regretfully engaging; I've watched it a number of times with a deep appreciation for the casting which couldn't be improved upon. Each character plays their role with frightful accuracy; Thirlby in particular has made this feature her anthem.

The plot, unfortunately, is idealistic and too simplistic -- an examination of the mixed feelings a couple experiences when marriage comes as a result of perceived necessitiy rather than genuine timing. SPOILER ALERT

The ending leaves you hopelessly frustrated creating more questions than the much more desired resolution the viewer might crave for. Be that as it may, this feature filled a void for me and is, what I consider, an excellent choice for a couple's "movie night."

... don't just watch it once

... five years have passed since first watched this film... barely remembered it at all from the first viewing... this time around enjoyed it very much more, as much as one can "enjoy" seeing-rapid-disintegration of a six-year-committed-relationship

... can you 'love'-someone once-serious-doubts-surface, then-heading-out separate-ways, expressly for the purpose of-hooking-up, and when your first-choice is-made-unavailable, later in-your-apartment (sans-brand-new-hubby), you sofa-bed-a-guy encountered-couple-hours-earlier... her-raw-demeanor-dialogue during-n-after-sex, is-explicit-confirmation no-way it-should-have-taken six years getting to that point

... all the well-chosen-cast really-doing-good-work... look forward to watching it again... in less than five years time... and be sure to read Clare Clarke's well-written-review at The Panoptic.

Warning: Spoilers
I honestly think the characters are quite human, act was great. It's fine tasting movie with things to chew on and think about relationship. Of course they are unlikable characters but it talks about most of our true desire inside, and it happens to be too short ending. I still don't know why this is under appreciated. Should have been to a film festival instead.
