This sonnet compares scentless roses and sweet roses, with the difference between beautiful people who have no inner truth or beauty, and the subject of the sonnet, who is both beautiful on the outside but on the inside too. In such a piece it is perhaps not a surprise that we find ourselves surrounded by beautiful springtime buds of flowers, although it is a novelty to find the whole short is shot with the actress up a tree in central park! Other short films have chosen to make a direct link to some of the imagery in the sonnet text and then just focus on delivery (rather than making a narrative around it) and the results have not always been great.
Here the film works well because it accepts its location but does not overuse it, instead focusing on the delivery of the sonnet by the actress. In this way the film is simple but effective because the sonnet is clear, well paced and nicely delivered by the actress. She maybe at time seems a bit lost up her tree with limited props to interact with until she is allowed to address the camera directly, but mostly she makes it work as Beans' voice is soft, warm and engaging and I found the text easy to follow and understand. Other shorts in the series perhaps come with more invention, more interpretation or more flair, but there is totally nothing wrong with this film just making a really good job of delivering the sonnet so that the viewer gets it and has the pacing/time to appreciate the words.
