S1.41: Sonnet #107: Good clear delivery but I did hope for some help in understanding or context that isn't really there

Film 41 in the Sonnet Project appears to bring another sonnet which is about the ravages of time and the attempts to resist them through love and the written record of it. The writer makes particular reference to doom-mongers saying the world is coming to an end but then in the second half it seems to reverse this as instead it talks of how good things are – but either way the conclusion is that the monument of this writing will outlive death. It is a sonnet I found difficult to read and I was interested to see how the film interpreted it.

It was a little disappointing then to see that the film didn't really do much to help the viewer understand the context or meaning of the text. Perhaps this was not helped by how needy I was as I approached it, but the film really just takes the sonnet and delivers that. As we see with other films, this is not a bad thing by any means, it was just a bit of a blow as I was looking to come out with a greater understanding or some food for thought. The delivery is good though, and Kinsherf has energy and clear delivery. The park is nicely used too, not as a prop but more as a good backdrop and it looks and sounds good as a film. The ending is a bit odd though, as tonally it just sort of stops, with the actor left to awkwardly look away as it fades to black.

Although it did not do more, this is not to say it did nothing. As a delivery of the sonnet it is clear with a good presence from the actor – I just would have liked more to aid the understanding of the words and some meaning to them as they were spoken.
