The Virungas: Land of Ice and Fire

The first four episodes of 'Wildest Africa' are indicative of an excellent and wildly overlooked series, though just falls short of the all-time great documentaries that are more ground-breaking, which continued all the way through the series. One of the best of the 'Wildest' series of documentaries and when it comes to documentaries on African wildlife, different habitats and cultures it is to me one of the best.

"Virungas: Land of Ice and Fire", focusing on Virunga National Park with its wide diversity of habitats (the biggest for any African park) and active volcanoes, doesn't disappoint in any shape or form. Consider it actually one of the series' best and most educational episodes and representative of what 'Wildest Africa' is all about and why it's as great as it is. There is a lot of information here and a lot of habitats covered but it doesn't become exhausting or under-explored, though maybe there didn't need to be quite as many habitats featured.

All the habitats, and this episode has got to be the episode with the highest number of habitats, look incredible. They are of sheer beauty, like the ice fields of the Ruwenzori mountains and the Congo basin. Yet they are also uncompromising, like the lava plains, swamps and monsoon lands. The way they're photographed is remarkably vivid and what's just as incredible is how much we see with such impact so up close. The music doesn't become intrusive or overwrought.

Found everything covered absolutely fascinating and was illuminated by a lot of it, including a relatively rare chance to globally endangered animals such as the mountain gorilla. Everything here engaged and it was all entertaining and informative delivered with enthusiasm and sincerity by Colin Salmon.

In a nutshell, excellent and one of the series' best. 9/10
