Rio
When Clive sent a Postcard from Paris. You knew immediately he loved the place. Clive had a romantic attachment to Paris from his very first visit as a young man.
With Rio, you get the feeling that outside of Copacabana beach Clive had little love for the place.
At the time of his visit in the late 1980s, Brazil had rampant inflation and a government that could not deal with even the simplest of problems but they could grow the national debt.
Rio is a city with beautiful people in thongs that frequent the beaches. If you try to get there with your gold chain on, you could get robbed. Side by side in Rio are the favelas, where people with nothing live in the shanty towns located on the hills. Mud slides could mean that even your home in the shanty town has disappeared and you find yourself living on the streets of Rio.
Clive highlights the contrasts in Rio. He visits a successful plastic surgeon and other wealthy socialites who live behind thick walls with armed guards and guard dogs. He then goes to a favela and drops in on a voodoo ceremony. Clive looks on uneasily and with bewilderment.
Three decades later when I went to Rio, it was a rising economy but its politics was still tumultuous. They now have a far right President with misogynistic, anti gay and racist views. The beaches are wonderful, the waves make it difficult to swim though. The favelas are expanding even more, now joined by people from other south and central american countries.
Crime is still rampant. As I checked out of my hotel, an American visitor was checking in. He had decided to go to an AirBnB but on his first night, three shooting incidents occurred. He decided to go to the safety of a five star hotel on Copacabana beach. I think Clive would still had remained unimpressed with the progress made in Rio.
