Sex & Nudity

  • No sex scenes or nudity.
  • In the beginning of the movie a woman's nude back is shown as a few other women paint it for a ceremony.
  • A young woman's bare shoulders are seen as she cleans herself up by a creek/river.
  • A young man catches a young woman as she jump/falls out of a tree and accidentally grabs her breasts. She pushes him away angrily and tells him not to touch her like that ever again.
  • A few kissing scenes between lovers.

Violence & Gore

  • There are several battle sequences with medieval style combat with swords, spears, and shields but blood is mild and the fights are not too graphic.
  • A young woman is tied to a wooden contraption on a beach and offered as a sacrifice to a sea serpent. We see her scream in terror before she is eaten in one bite. No blood.
  • A young woman slaps a young man when he kisses her.
  • A few minor scuffles between Vikings during a feast for the purpose of entertaining the crowd. Three challengers are quickly defeated by a much stronger warrior from a rival clan but the fourth is able to beat him. No blood, but heavy punches and wrestling style attacks and throws. One challenger tries to use a fire poker as a weapon but Stomper (the big warrior) simply grabs it and head butts the other Viking down. We hear Stomper's hand sizzling from grabbing the burning metal.
  • A group of armed soldiers attack a young man in the woods. He shoots two with his crossbow and manages to kill the other with his blades. Minor blood is shown.
  • Soldiers from an enemy clan attack a village and several people are killed in the ensuing battle. The most graphic death shows a man impaled from behind with a sword. We see the bloody tip come of out his chest before the sword is yanked out and he falls to the ground dead.
  • A young woman is kidnapped by a rival Viking clan. They kill the guards protecting her and drag her from her village roughly.
  • A man threatens a younger man several times throughout the film, at one point saying he will tear out the boy's heart and feed it to the fishes.
  • A man threatens to cut off an old man's fingers if he tries to intervene with their quest. He grabs the man's hand and is ready to cut off his thumb but the old man finally gives in to their request and lets them barrow his boat so they leave him unharmed.
  • During a storm at sea, several Vikings are forced to jump ship before they run into some dangerous rock formations. We later learn that three of them drowned off screen.
  • A young woman is bound and taken to a king's throne room. He explains she is going to be sacrificed to their god and she attempts to escape. She steals a guard's dagger and threatens to kill a servant, but ends up just making a run for it instead. She is quickly captured again and taken to a dungeon.
  • There is a battle between two groups of Vikings with one group being enemy soldiers and the other containing our heroes. Our heroes' group quickly kills all but one of the soldiers and they take him prisoner. They threaten to cut off his limbs until he agrees to lead them to the princess they are trying to rescue.
  • A semi-main character is mauled in the neck by a wolf and dies of his injuries. Some blood is shown.
  • A young man kills a wolf by stabbing it through the neck. Very quick and no blood is visible.
  • A young woman is tied to a wooden contraption on the beach and she insults her captors. The king slaps her twice as punishment.
  • Three Vikings attack another group of Vikings to rescue their princess. They kill nearly the entire enemy party, including the king. He is stabbed through the abdomen and then it cuts away as he is beheaded off screen before it cuts back to show his headless body falling to the ground. Blood is shown.
  • A giant sea serpent rises out of the water and sees that there is no princess for him to eat. He eats an old man standing on the beach instead as the man laughs maniacally.
  • A dying man holds his adopted daughter's hand as he struggles to speak. We see blood in his mouth and on his lips as he tells her he failed her. He dies a few moments later.
  • A man roughly grabs a young woman by her hair and drags her out of the village. She screams and cries in pain.
  • A man is killed by another using a crossbow. He's shot three times before he finally goes down.
  • A man tries to stop a young man from rescuing his friend. He pulls the boy off his horse and throws him to the ground. The young man throws dirt in his attacker's eyes and then hits him across the face with a metal rod.
  • A man is burned alive when a sea serpent breathes fire at him. Not graphic but we see his fiancé screaming and crying in horror as she watches him die.

Profanity

  • Several insults throughout the film like "fool", "idiot" and "cur".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Vikings drink ale and mead during a feast and several become intoxicated and behave drunkenly.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The Volsung king's Druid (wizard/sorcerer) is pretty creepy. He is the one who encourages the kings to sacrifice their daughters and orders his giant wolves to kill our heroes.
  • A semi-main character dies after he is mauled by a giant wolf. His friend kneels beside him as he dies and sends him off to Valhalla with a prayer. Pretty sad scene.
  • Wolven is also shown to be rather cruel and arrogant. He threatens the main character and several others multiple times and towards the end of the film he violently drags a teenage girl by her hair as she cries and screams in pain.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • It is implied that a king raped his sister in order to have a daughter as his wives had only given him sons. She later jumped into the ocean in a suicide/escape attempt while she was pregnant. She survived and gave birth to a daughter.

Violence & Gore

  • In a flashback sequence we learn a woman was raped by her brother and we see her jump from the castle tower into the ocean in a suicide/escape attempt. She is heavily pregnant at the time. She survives though and is rescued by a fisherman. It's said she gave birth to her daughter on the boat and died shortly after.
  • A man drags a young woman (disguised as a boy) out of a hut into the village square and holds her at knife point as he reveals to the villagers that she is in fact a female and a princess no less. A main character is nearly strangled and another mortally wounded as they try to protect her.
  • A young man stabs a sea serpent in the face with a metal rod. The serpent rises up and thrashes around in pain, lifting the young man with it. The rod is then struck by lightning just as the young man lets go and falls into the ocean (he survives). The serpent is electrocuted and explodes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The beginning scene of the film with the princess being sacrificed is pretty sad. She cries and begs her father not to do this and says she doesn't want to die. Her father just ignores her and they summon the serpent anyway. The princess screams in terror before she's eaten.
  • The Volsung king is proven to be very heartless and cruel and it's revealed that he raped his sister just to try and get a daughter to have a princess to sacrifice. She later attempts suicide as a result but survives. Disturbing revelation, especially since he only wanted a daughter so he could sacrifice her to the serpent and just decided that since his wives have only given him sons he'll just see if his SISTER will have a girl instead and raped her.
  • The climax of the movie is decently intense with the main character rushing in and attacking the serpent to protect his friend. The serpent explodes after it's electrocuted by lightning and for a moment we don't know if the protagonist survived but of course he crawls up the shore a moment later right as rain.
  • The premise of the film is a Viking clan that worships a giant sea serpent must sacrifice a princess every one hundred years but the current king has no daughters (at least that he knows of) and so he kidnaps a princess from a different clan and intends to sacrifice her instead. The idea in and of itself of a young woman being offered to a sea monster to be eaten alive is pretty horrific.
