Showcasing how to quickly kill yourself in episode 1
u_urcle29 March 2020
During episode one, we get to see the 2 hosts use a winch and climbing-rope, to lower a Jeep. Hosts climb next to the steel-winch-cable, so on the way up they show the viewer how they expose themselves to getting legs cut off if the winch fails.

And at the top, one host stands in the line of fire while manually lowering the car. An excellent position to risk decapitation!

If this was an American show, I'm sure any competent person would have stopped this from airing due to liability.

Besides some other factual errors, which I don't believe an experienced off-roader would have missed, the show could have been better if it wasn't trying too hard to be "cool" and exaggerating so much.

Irresponsible

Warning: Spoilers
The concept for the show is appealing. Take a vehicle where no one has taken a vehicle before. Essentially that is every off roader's dream.

The hosts have personalities typical of this type of "reality" show. Obnoxious enough that you'd distance yourself at a party, but not so full of themselves that you turn the show off.

Where the show fails, hard, is in the execution. I'm only two episodes in and already the hosts have: winched without blankets, stood next to the cable while winching, winched pulling on the roof rack, and, stupidest of all, climbed under a vehicle supported only by the winch cable. These are all potentially deadly. The two hosts are either amateurs or idiots.

I'm leaning amateur because of their reaction later in the second episode when the winch cable snapped while trying to drag the car sideways. They were like "huh, look at that". Since they were both standing in the danger zone, winching with no blankets, and were lucky not have been cut in half, their reaction should have been relief that they were still in one piece.

The show is so irresponsibly presented that the standard disclaimer about "don't try this at home" is wholly inadequate. The producers need to make it clear the viewer is watching two cartoon characters who are either total noobs or complete morons, possibly both.

Fail.

too dumb

I only watched the first episode. I often like to track on google maps where these adventurers are going through. During the episode, they were careful enough not to show a precise route, and didn't even care to indicate what the finish point was. Just some beach where "nobody had driven to before them". They mention starting from San Felipe, Baja California, driving south to Sierra Santa Isabel, and then east, to the the Sea of Cortez / Gulf of California. Total distance is about 100kms. As it happens, their final destination can't be more then just 3 or 4 kms away from the Federal Highway 5 that follows the east coast of the Baja California. So, although it might be possible that no one has ever driven on that beach before them, there's a good reason for that. You can drive along the road and then hike to the sea. And if you want to go to the mountains, you could also go there, even with your car. But driving across desert and mountains to reach a beach, when you could drive down the road, because you want to pretend you're reaching some spectacular, secluded place is just dumb!
