As NBC readies "Hairspray" for its next musical production and Fox prepares to air "Grease: Live" on January 31, the broadcast networks' latest attempt to keep cord-cutters—or "cord-cobblers," as Showtime's David Nevins put it at the Television Critics Association's biannual press tour—from wielding their proverbial knives is gaining steam: it appears, at least for now, that the live TV musical is here to stay. Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris is no more, according to Variety, which reports the madcap show has been scrapped for another Nph project. The actor's live variety show had debuted in September with mixed reviews and fun clips. But after scoring modest ratings and setting precedent for a grueling production schedule, Bte was ultimately deemed too much of a hassle by its network and host. "It was an incredibly complicated and sophisticated form of television to put on a live show on a weekly basis," an NBC exec told Variety on Tuesday. "We're proud of Neil for giving it his all, and we have steely resolve to work together on something new." That something new will likely remain nebulous until early next year, by which point Harris, his Prediction Productions company, and NBC should have reportedly brainstormed a time even better than the best time.

Neil Patrick Harris had the support of his adorable family during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Michael in NYC on Monday. The actor was making the talk-show rounds to promote his variety show, Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris, which premieres on NBC on Tuesday night. He was joined by his husband, David Burtka, and their twins, Harper and Gideon, who posed for a cute family photo with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on the set. A video of the little ones saying hello to the hosts was also posted on the show's Instagram - how cute are they? Along with his return to TV, Neil is also celebrating his one-year wedding anniversary with David. The couple tied the knot in Italy after 10 years together and commemorated the big day with a sweet social media snap last week. Next up for the couple and their kids? Halloween.
