Even though the Wright Brothers did test their non-powered gliders in the area known as Kitty Hawk on the barrier islands now known as The Outer Banks of North Carolina, their actual powered flight took place at the sand dune known as Big Kill Devil Hill in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the area four miles south of Kitty Hawk as noted in the letter that they wrote to their father after their first successful powered flight. The Wright Brothers National Memorial is still located there today.
