Review of season 3: Episodes 7-9
8512227 September 2015
Greetings from Lithuania.

Episodes 7,8 were 9/10 and episode 9 was 10/10.

The story gets more tight in episodes 7,8 and although nothing groundbreaking didn't happen, they were very good episodes.

Episode 9 was the best so far in season 3 in my opinion. Story moved forward, and it represented everything i love "Ray Donovan" in first place - great acting (as usual), great, plausible and intriguing script and real feeling of this family. Great last 10/15 min. of this episode, everything just felt right, in place and time. Jon Voight is brilliant in here, especially during the money return scene at the end of the episode - he and Liev Schreiber click here wonderfully - you can FEEL that they aren't simply caricatures.

Overall, 3 episodes left in season 3, and i bet they will be great.

Voight finally meets his match .... himself

Warning: Spoilers
Another homerun knocked out of the park.

When creators Johnson and Biderman first pitched this show, they said it was about "a guy who fixes other people's problems but cannot manage his own."

They have kept true to that promise all along but it was never more clear than in this episode: brother about to be married is arrested; arrested because "amateur crime boss" father (played by Voight) refuses to assist police as promised; daughter cannot keep her hands off one of her teachers; older brother becoming sicker with Parkinsons; half-brother falling in love with a hooker; Ray's "big deal" about to be vetted by an old enemy .... and this is just a typical episode. Not even a season climax!

Wanted to draw attention to the only time in series (so far) that Voight slips out of character. I have said in other episode reviews that his is one of the most under-appreciated character actors in Hollywood.

At the 30:00 mark - dead on -- Ray confronts his dad in the hotel room where he has been hiding. Voight's character -- Mick -- is conflicted, he is sitting with a gun in his hand (to fend off the law while fleeing) and wearing a suit (to attend his son's wedding.)

It is an interesting scene if you are a die-hard fan. Facing the camera with suit and gun, Voight slips out of character for only a few seconds, but in those seconds the raw intelligence of the actor and also his raw charisma (even at age 77) slips through and, if you are paying attention, the effect will shock you.

Then the moment passes and one of the greatest actors of our age gets his character under control again ... and Ray's problems continue.

This is so far the best episode

Warning: Spoilers
This is the best episode not just because from a cinematographic point of view but from a more sentimental stand point.

I love how the family comes to gether for Bunchy. Specially Abby, who takes care of Ray's brother Terry, as if it was her own. Its as it should be. Family, should be as such.

Most of the times, in real life, we see families, scattered apart. But this is a sure example of how it really should be. I loved how the kept Bunchy so innocent throughout, and that they gave a voice for him. His gal, who is like one of his superheroes from his childhood comics. I can feel the joy in his heart when she arrived in to his life. And it tops off with Seal singing Kiss from a rose. This was a well deserves joyous episode from a great sequence of tragedies that came before it. And I love it so much.
