- We open in December 1966, in the modern world, where Isaac the author is working as a color TV salesman -- and not doing a great job of it. His boss chastises him for not being able to tell stories that people want. That's when Isaac gets a letter from a book publisher. The sorcerer's apprentice sits in an otherwise empty room and displays an array of pens from which Isaac is asked to choose. He chooses the right one, apparently, which means that Isaac is to be the next author. The apprentice opens the door for Isaac to join him to the magical world of Fairy Tale Land, promising him that all of his questions will be answered.
Regina, Robin and the crew are poring through blank books, but there's no trace of anything the author has written. August comes in and tells them about the apprentice, and Killian knows where to find him. Some magic pretty quickly gets the apprentice out of his hat box, and he immediately says they have to set things right with Isaac by trapping him back in the book. He needs the page with the painted door, which Henry says is back in the loft.
Back at the pawn shop, Isaac is telling Mr. Gold that it's time for a world where up is down and where the heroes finally get their happy endings. In his new story, Mr Gold asks Isaac to write his memory as one in which he remembers having done right by his dead son. Isaac finishes writing the new book and, when he writes, "THE END," lights flash and it seems things are about to change.
Henry wakes up and finds himself apparently the only person left in town. He roams the streets calling out, but no one responds. He heads out of town and asks a waitress whether she's seen any of his family members, showing them pictures. She calls the cops and suggests he might be a runaway. He finds a paperback of "Heroes and Villains," Isaac's book. Henry goes to a talk Isaac is giving and gets his attention by showing him the page of the painted door. Isaac tells Henry that his family all live in the original version of his book -- except for Emma because there was no room for a savior. Isaac says that because he can't write his own happy ending -- but he did -- he's lost his magic, and is now, he says sarcastically, just a best-selling author with legions of fans. Henry tries to take Isaac's book and eventually does, then jams the key into a page and is sucked down into the book. There, the author catches up to him and knocks him unconscious with a hit to the head.
Henry and the author are now both trapped in the book. Henry realizes that Isaac fears a hero getting his or her happy ending, because that could change the book. An ogre attacks and Isaac takes off. The ogre is vanquished by a knight on horseback. Rumplestiltskin -- a knight in this book -- is the savior. Henry pulls out his paperback version of the book to find his way around. He runs into Regina and tells her he's her son. She doesn't believe he's who he says he is, and she thinks Henry is crazy. He shows her the paperback book to prove it and it freaks her out. She throws the book into the fire and Henry can only yanks a page out before the rest burns up. Regina leaves and tells Henry that Robin Hood is her competition, and that the queen wants her dead.
Walking through the woods in his own book, Isaac is trapped in a net -- by the seven dwarves. They don't like the "Long live Regina" button -- which had been given to him by a fan at the book signing event -- and knock him out. They bring him to the queen -- Snow White. She's about to have him beheaded when Isaac tries to save himself by blurting out that he knows who Snow White truly loves -- James, Charming's dead twin brother. He says he can help her find Regina, as long as Snow White kills Henry and Regina together. Queen Snow White is happy to agree.
Snow White finds Regina in the wood and begins to rip her heart out -- but Charming suggests that she ask Regina about the boy first. Snow White is about to kill Regina when an arrow knocks her over and Regina is scooped up by a knight on a horse -- it's Robin Hood. He brings her back to a tavern and tends to a wound on Regina's hand and they share a drink. He asks Regina if she's up for taking his place as leader of the merry men. He tells her he's met a woman who is the reason he can't be a thief anymore -- it's Zelina. Regina winds up leaving the tavern abruptly, offering a final congratulations to both Zelina and Robin. Henry finds Regina again and tries to tell her that everything is flipped and Zelina is getting Regina's happy ending. Henry decides he needs to stop Robin and Zelina's wedding. Regina asks Henry about his other mother, Emma, he says her magic is even greater than Snow White's. When he refers to her as "the savior," Regina says there was someone know as the savior, but Snow White had her locked up. We see that Emma is locked in a tower on an island.
