- The hospital doctors become fascinated with Dr. Herman's case when Amelia gives a lecture detailing the intricacies of the surgery. Arizona and Herman continue to bond over the amount of cases they are trying to complete before the big surgery. Meanwhile, Bailey brings them a case of a pregnant woman who is close to her heart.
- Arizona drags Dr. Herman into her daily MRI and, while she's in there, Hunt brings Amelia a cup of coffee and she kind of freaks out about how he's a distraction. Afterward, Bailey tracks down Dr. Herman and asks about a patient of hers that Dr. Herman refuses to see. Then Dr. Herman goes and knocks out three of her many surgeries before Arizona tells her it's time for a radiation treatment -- which Dr. Herman doesn't want to do it.
Amelia gives a talk about Dr. Herman's tumor and her plans to treat it. Hunt told her earlier that she's developing quite a buzz and a couple of other hospitals that want to have video of her talk. As Dr. Herman braces for her radiation treatment, Arizona starts to walk away and Dr. Herman reaches out to grab her hand. Arizona holds it for a moment, then leaves.
A week later, more of Dr. Herman's surgeries have been completed -- and her hair is starting to fall out from the radiation treatment. Dr. Herman decides to stop going to radiation, but Amelia pleads with her to go back.
In the cafeteria, Callie is annoyed by Arizona laughing and spending a lot of time with Dr. Herman.
Bailey corners Arizona and tells her about why she wants so badly to save her patient's baby, which has a tumor. Dr. Herman is duped into seeing the woman, Glenda Castillo, and does the consult before realizing who the patient is. She's annoyed afterward and still says no to doing the surgery. Arizona presses Dr. Herman on why she won't take on the case, and Dr. Herman tells Arizona to pick a case from the bulletin board that they won't do so that they can treat Glenda Castillo. Arizona can't do it.
Another week later, more hair gone, Dr. Herman goes in for another radiation treatment and panics while it's happening and insists on getting out. She says she doesn't want to keep doing the treatment because she doesn't want to be miserable for her final months.
Meanwhile, one of Dr. Herman's patients starts bleeding out and Dr. Herman tries to save the baby, whose heart has stopped beating, with an emergency C-section. The baby dies. Arizona cries and Dr. Herman tells her, essentially, to snap out of it. She takes that patient's card off her bulletin board and replaces it with Glenda Castillo's card. She tells Arizona to tell Bailey that they're on for Glenda's surgery.
Glenda is worried about the surgery being potentially damaging to the baby. She wants to wait a few more weeks because she's only 24 weeks along. Dr. Herman gets annoyed that Glenda, the patient, won't take her advice, which Arizona finds funny because it's exactly what Dr. Herman is doing to Amelia.
Amelia, meanwhile, is starting to go nuts over being unable to come up with the right approach to remove Dr. Herman's tumor. She gets upset when Stephanie suggests she check with Derek for some ideas or to compare notes. She yells at Stephanie and calls her an "idiot resident." Stephanie tells Amelia to "get it together" and not call her names.
Another week later, Dr. Herman is losing more hair. Callie asks Arizona how she's doing and how she's getting along with Dr. Herman. Heading to her next weekly talk, Amelia panics and Hunt tells her she can talk to him. She says she's worried because she's always been "the other Dr. Shepherd" and that she has a feeling that when she cuts into Dr. Herman's brain and faces the tumor she'll realize she's actually "the wrong Dr. Shepherd."
Meanwhile, Dr. Herman and Arizona get an emergency patient and go to an O.R., where Dr. Herman tells Arizona to take the lead. Arizona says she's not ready, but Dr. Herman uses the moment to tell her that she's going to have to take things over eventually and, as hard as it is for Dr. Herman to let go of it all, the least Arizona can do is deserve it.
Arizona not only handles the surgery, but she tries a new trick of her own to get through a tricky spot and impresses Dr. Herman.
At the end of Amelia's talk, she takes some questions and Callie asks her if Derek is going to be helping -- and questions whether Amelia should be doing it alone. Amelia only says she's is doing it on her own, then asks for the next question.
Dr. Herman later goes to Amelia and says she should do a brain scan. She's experiencing something weird, her vision is fuzzy and it feels like she has blinders on. Amelia does the scan and looks stunned when she sees the results.
Arizona comes looking for Dr. Herman because Glenda Castillo's surgery needs to be done immediately. She tells Amelia that she needs the scan to wrap up, but Amelia tells Arizona "it's time" for Dr. Herman's surgery.
As Dr. Herman prepares to go into surgery, she tries to give Arizona some last-minute tips about Glenda Castillo. Arizona assures Dr. Herman that Amelia is going to handle things.
Dr. Herman is carted into the O.R. and everything gets prepped. She grabs Arizona's arm one last time and tells her, "Time to go."
