Orphaned at age 5, Pullitzer prize war photographer Damien Thorn is traumatized less by his expulsion for civil war-torn Syria then the puzzling touch of a crone who revived forgotten childhood memories, notably the traumatic death of his parents and nurse. Helped by devoted assistant Amani Golkar and colleague Kelly Baptiste, he looks for her and into his family history, notably his father the diplomat-archaeologist's interest in the Holy Land. The quest leads to theology professor Igor Reneus, whose anxious referring to the Apocalpse they dismiss, until they hear he was devoured at home shortly after by dogs, unaware their visit also triggered a Vatican alarm. The ghostly crone appears in countless pictures.
