Damn good episode--if you understand it.

Warning: Spoilers
Everyone seems to think this episode is crap. It isn't. What reasons have been given that would not be among the watchable episodes of always sunny; deplorable behavior, disbelief about the nature of Frank's character... unnecessary bigotry and brashness? Look, I will by no means admit that this was among THE BEST always sunny episodes--for me, Charlie Rules The World and Charlie Kelly: King of the Rats take the title--but I refuse to accept that this episode was badly written. Firstly, Frank has been shown to be BY FAR the worst behaved member of the group, see episodes like The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention, wherein he receives a very mashy handjob... FROM HIS Niece! and letting Hwang die is deplorable?! This is the man that Frank burned money in front of, almost entirely unprovoked--not to mention the fact that he states "I hope you choke on that and die right now" (or something along those lines), mere moments before it actually happens. And you think Frank--the man who has, on multiple occasions, set his own daughter on fire--wouldn't take that sandwich and start eating it in front of his dying landlord? He will. He did.

Secondly, yes Frank is the 'smart guy' of the group--or at least he was. But no longer; while Frank certainly started out as the man with the plan, he very rapidly started devolving into a semi-psychotic, forgetful, racist, and overall negatively motivated drug addict... and an insanely rich one at that. See Frank doesn't do that business stuff anymore--he lives on the fringe, or, as he calls it, "fringe class." And in the context of always sunny, he makes more sense as the money man anyway; the gang doesn't need any one specific person making up plans, they can all do that themselves--but they do need some source of seemingly never ending income (Frank) with almost no strings attached. And if you think his reactions, his meanness, his almost helpless inner monologue etc. are not 'genuine Frank,' well think about his environment. He can't remember the last thing anyone said to him, and he is constantly in fear of being at the bottom of the group--hence berating Dee--and his addled mind has very few pleasures left... ie Nightcrawlers.

You have to see the episode through his eyes to get into it--but really you have to know Frank--and I mean really get to know him--to understand the episode.

Best episode of season 11 HANDS DOWN
harrymus211 February 2016
This was by far the best episode of sunny for a while. Still second best to Charlie Work, but the camera-work for the POV angle was mind blowing. This show does not seem low budget as it did when it first started due to the camera-work shown in this episode. The choice of letting one character carry a whole episode is tough but who better to do it than Frank. Lots of laughs and we finally got to see an introduction to nightcrawler, sadly the episode ended before we could actually know what that game is, but thats what makes it more hilarious. My only flaw of the episode was that how was Frank able to get into and start Dennis' car without having the keys on him to begin with. Other than that, this episode reminded me of why i still watch sunny, and I hope they keep making more original episodes like this.

Worst Episode of the Series By Far
campbellcm-8370928 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I started watching IASIP a couple weeks ago on Hulu and so far, I've loved the series as a whole. There are plenty of great episodes but like with every series on the air, unfortunately there are some not-so-great episodes as well. Unfortunately, this episode falls into the latter. The use of the first-person perspective felt like a forced gimmick and became unwatchable halfway through the first scene. . This combined with the utter lack of humor made for a boring, unfunny, and pretentious episode that should have been tossed in the writer's room wastebasket way before being aired. Being Frank and Mac & Dennis Moving to the Suburbs are a one-two punch of supposed comedy that fails to hit its mark. In fact, punch is probably the wrong word to use, so let's say whiff. Hopefully in future episodes, IASIP writes more about barroom antics and failed get-rich-quick schemes that have made the show the comedy mainstay that it has become.

What was this trash?

Warning: Spoilers
I was watching "The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis" the other night, and I laughed at virtually every single scene due to the rapid-fire jokes, brilliant writing, and assured performances. Then I watched "Being Frank" and wondered what went wrong over the years.

"Being Frank" followswell, Frank, as he goes about his day. He forgets names, never listens to who's talking to him, and winds up in the trunk of a car after interfering with a Pondarosa predicament. It's all very scattershot and mean-spirited, and none of it works.

While I can admit that the style of the episode is highly original and welcome, it didn't do the episode any favours, and did not end up saving it. "Being Frank" was filled with so much despicable behaviour and unfunny jokes that I was left questioning how this episode even made it to air. I notice that the main three writers (McElhenney, Howerton, and Day) are almost entirely absent this season in the writing department. McElhenney and Day co-wrote the season premiere, but the rest of the season is left to other veteran and newcomer-writers alike. This episode was penned by longtime contributor Scott Marder, but you certainly wouldn't think so. It's filled with so many misfires that it actually becomes insulting.

Frank is absolutely deplorable in this episode, and while I understand that the Sunny crew isn't exactly beacons of upstanding citizenry, there is a limit. This episode featured Frank watching his landlord choke to death while calling him an asshole, be a racist, upend a buffet table and steal a rug, and randomly pop a child's balloon for no discernible reason. The darker humour works for the show when it's in the service of the outlandish plot or its characters, but the mean-spirited attitude of this episode didn't land, and it seemed like a new writer feeling out the "edgy" humour of Sunny and writing as many mean things as he can for the character. It destroyed Frank, and it destroyed the episode.

Also bewildering is the personalization of Frank himself. Frank has never seemed like an idiot. In fact, he's easily the smartest member of the group, as he ran a successful business and often one-ups and outsmarts the gang in their shenanigans. Here, he's portrayed as a bumbling idiot, drifting off when others are talking to him, forgetting names, and just generally acting like a fool who is lost in the world. It's a blatant reversal of Frank's character, and only seemed to service what this particular story needed rather than uphold previously established personality traits.

Overall, a bewildering, tiring, exhausting, completely unfunny episode that couldn't be saved by its own originality. Seriously, bury this trash, forget it existed, and lets move on with this series.

Glenn, Charlie, Rob. I'm begging you. Come back to this show. It desperately needs you.

Grade: F.
