- A group of children visit the hospital on a field trip and observe two injured cops rushed into the emergency room. Meanwhile, Stephanie develops a crush on one of the chaperones, and Amelia's forced to confront her feelings about Owen.
- Meredith realizes she's one of those people you want to punch in the face when they say, "I'm just so blessed." She's feeling good now that Derek is back and she's got her perfect job and perfect family. Derek, though, has to get Amelia's approval to come back.
There's an elementary school group taking a tour of the hospital, and Derek tells them, "My sister's my boss." Amelia is going to have fun with this.
Stephanie's going through a dry spell, sexually, and Jo thinks she's being too picky. Stephanie starts to take an interest in one of the chaperones on the kids' field trip. A car accident brings some patients into the E.R., and this school visit is ready to take a turn.
The school kids are stuck at the hospital while cops who've been shot come into the E.R. Two cops who've been shot are brothers and their mother shows up to see how they're doing. Callie is treating one of the cops who was shot when one of the suspects is wheeled in and the cops says he wants to know how the suspect is coming along.
Derek comes and offers to help Amelia with the traumas, but she asks him to go clip an aneurysm instead, and he does it. One of the cops, meanwhile, goes into shock and Amelia comes in afterward and confirms he's likely brain dead.
Hunt breaks the news to mother of Pete, one of the shot cops, that he's brain dead. Her other son, Brett, is still in surgery. She asks who did this to him, and we immediately see the suspect with multiple gunshot wounds.
Alex is entertaining the school kids with X-rays showing bizarre items in people's bodies. Stephanie is having fun with the chaperone.
Hunt and Derek have a moment where Hunt is surprised to see that Derek is OK with playing second fiddle to Amelia, and Derek invites Hunt to go fishing.
Amelia, meanwhile, is not pleased with the lengths the doctors are taking to save an alleged cop shooter -- or accomplice.
The other cop, Brett, suffers a stroke during surgery and goes brain dead like his brother. His mother is at a loss, trying to understand how both of her sons could have suffered the same fate on the same day.
Meredith is struggling with the ideas of asking her patient's mother for his organs, and Bailey complicates things by asking her if the mother would approve giving her son's liver to the suspected shooter/accomplice. The mother tells Meredith that her sons would want to help by donating their organs. Bailey jumps in and tells the woman about her 15-year-old patient who needs a liver, but Mrs. Gibson realizes Bailey is asking her to give her son's organs to the shooter. She says the kid can "go to hell." Meredith is annoyed and tells Bailey that she just screwed dozens of transplant patients out of a chance at getting organs.
One of the girls from the school trip is missing in the hospital, and Webber asks Stephanie to help look for her. Stephanie and Jo look around the hospital while Stephanie tells Jo that she's into the teacher.
The commanding officer, who's been asking about the suspected shooter's condition all day, says he knew the kid and that the cops had been trying to get him on the right for a long time. He says Brett, one of the officers who is brain dead, would have recognized this as "his moment," when the kid who'd taken the wrong path could be brought back onto the right one. The officer talks to Brett's mom, and she agrees to give up the liver.
Derek finds the missing student in the gallery, and he explains to her about how the dead cop's organs will go to someone who can use them. She looks down at Meredith in the O.R. and says she wants to be a surgeon.
Callie walks the commanding officer out of the hospital and he asks her out to dinner. She agrees to do it, maybe, in 10 days, when he needs to be back for another checkup. Stephanie asks the chaperon of he'd like to hang out sometime. She's stunned, then, when she learns that he's 17 years old. Jo finds this hilarious at the bar later.
Amelia and Derek have a nice little heart to heart about what's really important, and Derek realizes that the work he's doing in his sister's shadow is important enough. She reveals to him that she thinks she's falling in love with Hunt and she's afraid it's going to destroy her.
"Wouldn't be love if it it didn't," Derek says,
