A radio romance
TheLittleSongbird7 May 2023
Was not entirely sure of the premise at first, have seen it done well before but have also seen it done not very well at all. Still saw 'Love on the Air' for Hallmark completest sake and because of liking a number of their 2015 films. Have seen Alison Sweeney and Jonathan Scarfe in other films, with more familiarity with Sweeney, and while both of them have variable filmographies they themselves are always watchable (especially Sweeney, a Hallmark regular and consistent).

'Love on the Air' on the whole was quite good, if not great, and one of the better Hallmark films to have this (or something similar) premise. Did think that it started off on the rough side, but it is a case of me recommending staying with it because it does get a lot better. Something that has been said quite a lot by me in regard to Hallmark and Lifetime films overtime. Both Sweeney and Scarfe are represented very well in 'Love on the Air', once their material becomes a good deal better.

Am going to mention the not so good things first. As said, it doesn't start off great. The film does go too over the top on the know it all traits present in both leads, and it came over as rather snobbish and mean spirited at first. Also felt that the banter initially was on the excessive side, and initially too hostility heavy which again felt mean spirited and forced.

The story doesn't offer any real surprises and ends a little too neatly.

Both Sweeney and Scarfe are very engaging in the lead roles, with no signs of hamminess or phoning in. They engage with their characters quite passionately while giving the right amount of energy and nuance. Their chemistry is also one of the better ones of 2015's Hallmark films, with there being some real spark, wit and charm. They are very natural together and it feels genuine while not being hasty. The supporting cast are all solid, and mostly the characters have a good deal of personality and appealing ones.

Production values are easy on the eyes, particularly the scenery, and had no issue with the placement or use of the music (which has always varied wildly with Hallmark and continues to be). The story is light hearted and heart-warming on the whole, with a good deal of heart. It may lack surprises, but the energy is always there and it doesn't get too contrived later. The script on the most part is witty and very funny in the right places, while having heartfelt moments without schmaltz getting overdone. It doesn't come over as stilted.

Summing up, quite good if not great that is worth sticking with if initially unsure. 7/10.

Above par for Hallmark
MIamiReviewer27 September 2015
I give this an 8 out of 10, on my "hallmark movie scale". That is, sure, it's no Gone With the Wind. But relative to other HMM movies, this was really enjoyable. Even my husband, who is usually beside me napping/browsing the web, piped up that it was a whole lot better than my usual Sunday afternoon light fare.....

Anyhow, Alison Sweeney has got a real HMM thing going on, and is usually pretty charming and likable -as she is in this one. The lead guy is equally likable, and unlike most HMM movies, does not come across as gay (which, as an aside, is a major problem with this channel's movies - it's hard to get into the chemistry of a budding romance when the lead males are all so painfully, painfully gay. I don't know why HMM does this -- maybe they've tested their audiences and found out that they are drawn to this? But i digress....). The characters here have real chemistry, and great that, unlike so many HMM movies the lead woman actually has a real, successful career - and not just as a ubiquitous "event planner" or "marketing woman" or "wedding coordinator". And nice that she didn't quit said job at the end of the movie, as so many of these leads are inclined to do. Anyhow, just a cute fun movie, well acted, well-written, and pretty much lacking the painful awkward script moments that these movies usually have.

It's in the banter
Jackbv12310 August 2020
This movie is all about the banter back and forth between Alison Sweeney and Jonathan Scarfe. In this movie, the adversarial banter goes on longer than in a lot of movies of this type.

Both characters have very tough exteriors which are difficult to like. And it's a little more than just being tough on the outside. Both are stubborn advocates for their own gender and both exhibit some of those gender mid twentieth century stereotypes. There's a nice touch there in that each also one has at least one major characteristic opposite to those stereotypes.

Nick's softer side starts showing up before Sonia's, but they both have one. Nick also starts to show that inside he respects the opposite sex more than his reputation allows.

The story follows a predictable pattern with some well used plot devices like the misunderstood overheard conversation. But the strength of this movie isn't the story. It's in the relationships and the chemistry between the two leads.

Hallmark with a dash
SnoopyStyle20 October 2019
Sonia Mayerick (Alison Sweeney) has her own female empowerment radio show in Chicago. Her selfish boyfriend Scott Ryder ends their engagement on the air after listening to the popular man-cave show hosted by Nick Linden (Jonathan Scarfe). Sonia is substituting for a radio psychiatrist. She and Nick have an encounter. When Nick starts talking about her in his show, she is shocked to discover that she has been talking to the caveman himself. She barges into his show and chemical reaction occurs.

At the start, these are two annoying personalities. They are both know-it-alls. Her boyfriend does humanize her and his history does show more sides later on. I do see what the movie is setting up. Obviously, this is a meeting of combative opposites. It's a classic romantic trope although it's a little more edgy than the usual Hallmark fare. It boils down to the likeability of the two lead actors and the speed of their characters' growth. The explosive meet-hate of the first studio booth encounter piques my interest. They soften quite nicely. The reintroduction of Scott is good although he needs a more compelling actor. Without a better Scott, the triangle isn't strong enough. This is a solid Hallmark with a little spice.

He Said, She Said
boblipton27 September 2015
If you're looking for a standard Hallmark Romcom with a bit extra to it, this is the movie for you. She's a career-driven radio adviser to women, always advising her audience to "be an island" (especially after her fiancé dumps her); he's also in the business, but his métier is single men who want to stay that way.

With a set-up like that, of course they wind up as a wrangling advice couple on the same radio show. Also, inevitably they will fall in love, but they won't figure that out until the end of the movie.

In the meantime, they wrangle, and Alison Sweeney and Jonathan Scarfe are very good at that, speaking in short, clipped, snarky put-downs. Normally I would credit the writer, the actors or the director, but I'd really like to know who the editor of this one is. The cutting, although simple, helps the pace immensely, which is what editing is supposed to do.

There is nothing that is extraordinary in this one, but here's what happens when everyone does a good job: a superior result.

Just great!
novelistgirl3 October 2015
Wow, and I thought I had watched some pretty good Hallmark movies before! This one is more than good. It's just awesome. By far the best Hallmark movie I've seen so far. It's witty, fun, hot, romantic without being mushy, there's an amazing chemistry between the two leads, it made me laugh and cry, and I just didn't want it to end. It was everything a good romantic comedy should be, there's nothing I would change about it. You feel like they made a real effort with that one. There were also some really good lines and it didn't sound forced or rehashed. It's one of those movies that makes you want to enjoy the ride, and not rush to the ending. It felt so much unlike any other Hallmark movie. This one will be hard to top, but please Hallmark, give us more of those!

Delightful!
Margaret_Young22 May 2022
I suspect that the writers were fans of Jane Austen. I think Austen would have enjoyed this immensely. I certainly did!

The banter is fun and the main characters have a lovely arc. Perfect chemistry between Scarfe and Sweeney. One of Hallmark's best!

Good movie!
huggibear28 March 2017
I like Allison Sweeney. She's a quality actress. I knew her more from her Day of Our Lives tenure, than I did with Hallmark, but I'm watching her in more Hallmark films now these days. I had fun watching this movie. Crawling through the dog door, lol! I've done that before after being locked out of my house. What else can I say? It's worthy of watching over and over again.

Bad lead male character
teebear81721 May 2021
Had a cute premise. The problem is Jonathan Scarfe. He has no charm, his diologue is really bad. He is badly cast. There is zero true chemistry between the 2 leads. He says the wrong thing, is rude and not likeable. It was painful to watch the exchanges. Even as a man i have to say im tired of the cliche of unshaven men. Tired of that. This guy looks dirty not sexy. With a better cast actor this could have been like When Hary met Sally kind of thing.... Opportunity lost.

Love remains on the air...
abcj-211 April 2020
Love on the Air is one of my favorite Hallmark movies! It's one of those rare gems that if you keep watching enough movies, one will eventually make the cut. I loved it when I first saw it 5 years ago and the love remains after seeing it again in 2020. I give high marks to the casting with Alison Sweeney and Jonathan Scarfe who have wonderful chemistry and fun banter. Also, the script was well done from start to finish with the perfect ending! They don't seem to be making them like this anymore, so rediscovering a classic Hallmark was a welcome delight. Highly recommend!

Not for me!
Becky14512 May 2020
I have this on but I'm not really watching it. It is more background and the little bit that I do look up and watch, I find to be completely annoying! There is no way I would give this movie my full attention and I'm about to turn it off. My idea of romance is not people fighting and arguing their way to " falling in love". Nope. Oh my, it came back from a commercial and they are on the air having negative banter with each other and fighting again! This is not fun. I like to watch a movie and enjoy it not feel irritated. 2 thumbs down.

Shocked
msdeborahadavis16 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not a Hallmark Movie watcher, but I was too busy to change the channel, and this came on. It didn't take long for it to grab my attention.

. .

.

The storyline is clever, if not new; what is unique is their chemistry. I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed this movie.

. .

There are some seriously sensuous scenes, but still 100% family friendly.

. .

. Worth a watch! These two have charisma in this one!

. .

Spoiler: it has a happy ending. But you already knew that. There's an ADORABLE dog, and a good sister brother relationship.

It's very frustrating that this site doesn't allow reviews that are under 500 characters.

.

.

.

How much more needs to be written, for goodness sakes!

.

Seriously though, don't be afraid to watch it if you're wondering if it's worth it.

my opinion on Love on the Air
maryramji15 February 2016
In my opinion, Love on the Air is the best Hallmark movie ever. In fact it's my favorite movie ever. Alison Sweeney and Jonathan Scarfe have a lot of chemistry. And their comedic timing is perfect. The writing is terrific too. I've seen Love on the Air approximately 128 times which is the most I've ever seen a movie. As a matter of fact I'm watching it as I write this review. I will be surprised if their is another movie as good as this one.anyine who hasn't seen TV is movie ought to. It's a great date movie. You can sit on the couch, have some popcorn and enjoy a very romantic comedy about opposites attract. Give this movie a chance and you won't be disappointed

Stressful to Watch
dsv-343618 October 2023
Hallmark have a thing for depicting relationships where the two participants start off hating each other then fall madly in love ... because of course that happens so often in the real world. Usually it's the guy who is an arrogant, selfish, know it all and the girl just swoons all over the place because she apparently likes to be treated like that. In any event, this dreadful film takes that concept to the absolute maximum with not one but two arrogant, selfish, know-it-alls and an endless tirade of snarky baiting between them. Alison Sweeney, to be fair, gives a great performance. Scarfe gets the unshaven arrogant slob down to a fine art and doesn't disappoint if that's what you're looking for. The problem is ... what's the point? After 40 minutes of listening to the headache inducing arguing and sniping I had to hit stop. I know from other reviews on here that a lot of people love that kind of thing so I'm happy for them. For me, it's dreadful. It's painful. It's pointless.

Love on the Air
rcr160828 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed "Love on the Air." The guy, Nick (Jonathan Scarfe) reminded me of Rod Taylor who was my favorite male lead who co-starred with Doris Day in 'The Glass Bottom Boat.' The lady, Sonia (Alison Sweeney) I can't say she reminded me of Doris Day because no one is that perky, but she was just as likable as her co-star. I preferred the middle of the movie where they were becoming aware of each other and feeling attraction that we could see. All the plot points must be followed so they had to pretend to feint that she was going with the 'old hat,' but then, of course, she didn't. She went with the one we all wanted her to go with so no hissy fits all around. I wish the feint had come a little sooner so we could have seen them happy together for more than thirty seconds at the end. I just jumped back to the middle of the movie and watched them falling for each other again to make up for the lack of time together at the end.

Well done!
pamh-4136414 April 2021
I have watched a lot of Hallmark movies and this is one of the top. The banter is off the chart and made it really enjoyable for both of us watching. You still knew what was going to happen but super witty and great one liners.

Perhaps the best Hallmark has ever produced!
gjbarr13 August 2020
My wife and I watch Hallmark movies everyday. I do not know how we missed this 2015 production until now, but we loved it! The actors did a fantastic job with their lines, and the back and forth banter was hilarious, keeping us wondering how they would ever connect romantically in the end. Lots of chemistry! I agree with another reviewer that this is a class act production that could have been on the silver screen. We never repeat-watch Hallmark movies, in part because they are so predictable. However, we are going to watch this one at least twice again. It seems like some of the older Hallmark movies from a few years past are much better productions than what we have seen of those produced in the past 1-2 years. Perhaps one of the worst Hallmark movies was "Love in the Sun", which had some terrible acting. In fact, the leading male actor was pretty much as stiff as a board, with no emotion or chemistry with his girlfriend. I hope Hallmark keeps up these romantic productions, but with better quality acting and storylines.

If you have ever broken up with somebody (or been broken up with) and have a sense of humor about it - either coming from a good place or blocking your real feelings - you'll enjoy this flick.
