Melanie, the chart-topping folk singer of “Brand New Key” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” who performed at the Woodstock festival in 1969, died on Tuesday. She was 76.
Billy James, the singer’s rep, confirmed her death to Rolling Stone, but did not provide a cause of death. “We are heartbroken, but want to thank each and every one of you for the affection you have for our Mother, and to tell you that she loved all of you so much!,” the children of the singer born Melania Safka wrote in a statement.

In May, The George A. Romero Foundation announced it was looking for writers. After several months of deliberation, the foundation and Bloody Disgusting are excited to announce their selection. Five selected writers will create their own standalone four-episode mini-seasons set within the universe of The Dead. Joining the production team for the first season are:
Hannah Schooner, a writer, actor, singer and snake mom! When she’s not recording audiobooks, you can find Hannah working on her podcast, Dungeons & Drimbus, or taking care of her eight snakes.
Nick Harkins is a new screenwriter who spends most of his time riding a bicycle or doing film photography. Nick hasn’t been by a horror movie for awhile (1+ months).
Jeremy Ellett is a writer and fiction podcast producer in the middle of nowhere, Texas. You can listen to their work on podcasts like Two Flat Earthers Kidnap a Freemason, and The Subjective Truth.

"Star Trek" was the undisputed king of sci-fi television in the 1990s, but it lost that crown in the 2000s; prequel series "Star Trek: Enterprise" ended the franchise's reign with an abbreviated four season run (2001 to 2005). Different shows won the hearts of online fandom, including two contemporaries of "Enterprise" — "Futurama" and "Firefly."
The legacy of "Firefly" far outlasted its 14 episode run; fan demand led to the creation of the finale movie "Serenity" in 2005. Meanwhile, "Futurama" enjoyed a respectable 72 episode run from 1999 to 2003, but enduring popularity has revived it twice, first from 2007 to 2013, and again for a new season which premiered this summer. Short length doesn't mean a show will be forgotten, especially when the Internet can sustain a fandom like never before.
As detailed in "Star Trek" oral history book "The Fifty Year Mission" by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, these three shows intertwined in an episode of miscommunication and Hollywood office politics.

In January, the George A. Romero Foundation teamed up with Bloody Disgusting to create a new scripted audio series, The Dead. Today, The Dead is seeking aspiring writers to create stories in the spirit of George A. Romero. We’re looking for new and original character-driven stories focusing on the survivors of a zombie outbreak!
Stories should focus on the human experience and conflicts following a cataclysmic event, with the ever-present threat of an overwhelming zombie population. Pitches should not be tied to any previously established characters, locations, or intellectual property.
Writers can apply at PitchTheDead.com. Writers will be asked to pitch their story in the form of a Drabble (a 100-word micro-fiction) and upload previously written samples of their work. If selected, writers will be commissioned to write a 90-180 page screenplay, and will be invited to participate in an educational experience, including a writing mentorship and a...

‘Manifest’ Season 4 Part 1 Poster (Photo Courtesy of Netflix)
Netflix has set a November 4, 2022 premiere date for part one of Manifest‘s fourth season. Both part 1 and part 2 will consist of 10 episodes, however, Netflix did not confirm a launch date for part 2.
The streaming service picked up Manifest after NBC canceled the drama shortly after its season three finale aired. Season three ended on a cliffhanger, and the series never explained what actually happened to Flight 828 that caused the plane to land five years after it took off.
Netflix’s season four premiere date was announced on August 28th, a date Manifest fans celebrate in honor of the flight number at the heart of the drama. Netflix also honored that date when they originally announced they were picking up the series for one final season following its NBC cancellation, announcing the renewal on August 28, 2021.

Exclusive: We have learned that Bruce Willis and John Travolta are starring together again for the first time in 27 years in the Chuck Russell-directed action pic Paradise City. Production starts this Monday in Maui, Hawaii.
Willis plays renegade bounty hunter, Ryan Swan, who must carve his way through the Hawaiian crime world to wreak vengeance on the kingpin, played by Travolta, who murdered his father. I’m told the project is billed as being similar to Miami Vice but with bounty hunters instead of cops. Thai actress and model Praya Lundberg has landed the lead female role.
Though Paradise City technically reps the fourth time that Willis and Travolta are billed on a movie together, they only worked onscreen in the 1994 Oscar-winning $214M-grossing Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction respectively as boxer Butch Coolidge and mob guy Vincent Vega. Check out their scene below from that pic. Prior to that...

This Manifest review contains spoilers.
Manifest Season 3 Episodes 7 and 8
“Destination Unknown” is an apt title for the latest episode of Manifest because where in the hell are we headed with all this? As nice as it is to have major developments in the investigation into the callings and their origin and purpose, the introduction of sapphire residue may have been a bridge too far. It’s difficult to say with sci-fi dramas how much made-up stuff is too much; for example, the lifeboat idea was a great twist that raised the stakes considerably. But sapphire dust as an indication of a divine touch? Not so much.
At least with the piece of Noah’s Ark, there’s some feeling of consistency with the ancient Egyptian art from Al-Zuras, the many earlier angel-related callings, and the mythological importance of the peacock to the Greek pantheon. There’s a certain Indiana Jones or...

It seems like Bruce Willis has truly thrown in the proverbial towel as of late. The vast majority of his output over the last few years has either earned only a limited theatrical release or skipped cinemas altogether and went straight to streaming/VOD. Some of these efforts include Precious Cargo, Marauders and Once Upon a Time in Venice. And if you haven’t heard of any of them, we don’t blame you.
Still, Willis seems to be content with starring in mediocre projects and collecting his cheque at the end of each one. That was certainly the case when he signed on for 2018 thriller Acts of Violence, a disposable and cheaply made action flick that just arrived on Netflix last week. And despite an abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score of 0%, it’s absolutely dominating on the platform today, as it’s currently the 8th most-watched movie on Netflix.

You know, Nicolas Cage gets a lot of criticism for acting in straight-to-digital movies these days. But for every Vengeance: A Love Story or The Humanity Bureau, he sprinkles in little seen gems like Mandy and Color Out of Space as well as a memorable performance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He’s also set to play Joe Exotic, so at least he still tries to challenge himself. Bruce Willis, on the other hand, has officially thrown in the proverbial towel.
In the past nine years, he’s starred in 20 movies that have either had a limited theatrical release or skipped the cinema and went straight to your living room. Some of the names of these films include Precious Cargo, Marauders and Once Upon a Time in Venice. And before you think otherwise, that last one has absolutely zero connection to Quentin Tarantino.

Bruce Willis‘ last few pictures have mostly been junky, nearly straight-to-vod fare such as “Once Upon A Time In Venice,” “Marauders,” “Precious Cargo,” and “Extraction.” Basically, movies you didn’t even know existed. But “Death Wish” will see the actor hopefully back with something decent to work with as he teams up with Eli Roth on the remake of the Charles Bronson classic.

Bruce Willis has been creeping up on Nicolas Cage’s bread and butter — C-level action movies that pass through the multiplex with little in the way of fanfare and less in the way of actual audience interest — for a few years now, turning in roles in mostly underseen films like “Fire With Fire,” “Precious Cargo,” and “Vice” with startling regularity (while, somehow, still landing genuinely exciting parts in films like the upcoming “Death Wish” remake and the long-hyped “Glass”). But Mark Cullen’s ruthlessly boring and decidedly dismal “Once Upon a Time in Venice” marks a new low in Willis’ still-trucking action career, one that even Cage would likely flinch at, even if it does feature an entire sequence dedicated to naked skateboarding.

While Nicolas Cage is usually the example trotted out of actors taking paycheck gigs in low-rent films, I’d argue that Bruce Willis is the worst offender of starring in movies you haven’t seen or heard of. “Marauders,” “Precious Cargo,” “Extraction,” “Vice,” and “The Price” are the movies he’s made in the past few years that largely all went straight to VOD, with an obligatory (and usually tiny) theatrical release.

The stars of yesterday now are making three films a year you never knew existed until they show up on Netflix.^ Real Movie ^
In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.
The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way...

The steady rise of Donald Trump in this year’s presidential election has once again opened up questions about the negative effects of media celebrity and the weight and purpose of political journalism. Jonathan Sheldon’s new film “Swing State” takes that idea and spins a political satire that takes on America’s media obsession. The film follows liberal Seattle DJ Ethan Smith (Alex Beh) who creates a conservative radio personality named Charles Fern and becomes a national sensation. The film co-stars Taryn Manning (“Orange Is the New Black”), Angela Kinsey (“The Office”), Sean Astin (“The Lord of the Rings”), Billy Zane (“Titanic”), Elaine Hendrix (“The Parent Trap”), Nick Loeb (“Precious Cargo”) and Shane Black (“Iron Man 3”). Watch a trailer for the film below.

★☆☆☆☆ During the end titles of Precious Cargo we get a close up of some dog muck. It would be nice to think this was a bit of meta-humour or a moment of candid self-awareness from first time director Max Adams, but unfortunately his risible, derivative heist movie has the audacity to actually think it's quite good. Playing like a stuntman's show reel - sans narrative coherence - the only thing more annoying than the general ineptness, predictable story and Bruce Willis, is the film's smug air of self-satisfaction as it seeks to subvert tropes it barely manages to achieve.

Many articles have been written about the once strapping, now defunct 80s action hero/ era since the golden age of Rambo, The Terminator and Die Hard, but this flat-pack thriller co-starring Bruce Willis is no return to form for the genre, period or signature icon. Even though Willis has been cast against type in a […]

It’s fair to say Bruce Willis has taken his foot off the gas a bit in recent years. Who can blame him? Stars fade, and now everyone’s a 24/7 commentator it’s hard to keep working into advanced age, when the scripts landing on the mat require you to acknowledge the limitations of your age and play up to them, and even dip into the straight-to-digital-download market, without some accusing you of trashing your legacy.
People feel this sense of regret more keenly with Robert De Niro, who had further to fall after he stopped trying in 2002, but he at least continues to play the first or second lead, putting his name to the project and living or dying by it. Willis increasingly takes on roles that seem to require little time investment, and mails it in contentedly.

The Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has showed that the high-pressure world of competitive New York City private schools in ripe for satire, and now, there's a new series offering up its own parody of that scene. Precious Cargo, starring Lauren Singerman and Sasha Kaye (who also serve as two of the shows executive producers), is a witty send-up of spoiled children and the overbearing parents who do the spoiling.
Singerman and Kaye star as Lisa and Sandy, two sisters who both offer test prep to rich children. While the kids themselves often show off their privilege in hilarious ways (one child refers to her juice boxes as "chardonnay"), the real targets of Precious Cargo are the parents. From the first scene, in which three dads discuss whether their toddlers will be doctors or lawyers, the series pokes fun at the ridiculous lengths to which "helicopter parents" will go to nurture their children.

Most Bruce Willis movies right now seem to head to DVD almost immediately. We've found even more of them...
This article has been updated to include two new films - Precious Cargo and Marauders.

It’s not exactly clear when Bruce Willis went from being a big star whose name filled seats and sold tickets to being a guy whose name you see on the cover of so many direct-to-dvd and VOD outings (albeit ones that sometimes get a week or two in a cinema, in essence to promote the VOD release), but I’d like to go out on a limb here and say that Kevin Smith’s mouth might be partly to blame.

It’s tough to pinpoint exactly when Bruce Willis stopped giving a shit, mainly because he’s still capable of great work. His tremendous performance in Rian Johnson’s Looper goes a long way to helping cancel out those past few Die Hard sequels, although it’s a bit harder to forgive his phoned-in paycheck jobs in movies like Vice and Fire With Fire. Bruce Willis has bills to pay - pool guy, dry cleaner, personal chef, I imagine... And, in case you haven't figured it out yet, money doesn't grow on trees. That means some people have to keep working in order to maintain a certain quality of life. For Bruce Willis, that means doing movies like Precious Cargo. Now we can all take a look at the trailer for a flick like this and wonder how in... Read More...

I'd never heard of Precious Cargo until about five minutes ago, and after watching the trailer, it's easy to see why. Bruce Willis and Saved By The Bell star Mark-Paul Gosselaar? In a movie together? Where they play master thieves? Make no mistake, this looks terrible — but in a "this is so bad, it might actually be entertaining" kind of way. It's a low-budget, direct-to-dvd quality heist film that has Willis showing up to collect a paycheck and Gosselaar making an attempt to transition from Franklin and Bash territory into action movie mode. Check out the trailer below, and decide for yourselves if this is prime party viewing material — though the answer will largely depend on how tolerant your friends are of bad movies.
