A fantastic end to Series 2
Sleepin_Dragon11 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Mathias has to investigate the case of Aron Bowen, recently released following his conviction for murdering his wife, but when Mathias begins digging into the past of Bowen he finds his hands tied by boss Prosser, who seems to wish the case to remain closed.

The crime itself was almost secondary, it was the intense character play that made this episode so gripping, the intensity between the working relationship between Mathias and Prosser made for engaging viewing. So many questions were asked in this episode, why did Prosser not want Mathias looking into that case, who clobbered him and torched his caravan, and why are the events at Devil's Bridge still so relevant?

The acting has always been excellent on the show, but Helen Griffin surely gave one of the standout performances, she was superb. Nice to see DS SIan Owen given more of a story, allowing Helen Daniel to showcase her skills, she was great.

I've one more series to go, I'm almost trying to space them out, in the hope I hear that Series 4 is coming.

Fantastic!

What Happened with Prosser
Hitchcoc30 August 2017
This episode sets up the final season. Prosser and Mathias seem to be add odds, but it has to do with something that Prosser did in an earlier case (or something we are not privy to). I inadvertently watched episode 3.1 and wondered what event took place at the conclusion of Season 2. Now I know. The frame is being formed and Mathias is in the frame. But there are cohorts involved as we have seen in numerous approaches to Prosser by what appear to be superiors. This episode involves the murder of a man who had been convicted to killing his wife. This happens not long after he returns to the seaside village. It appears that there is more to this case than meets the eye, but those in power are doing what they can to slow down the investigation. Mathias, however, is a bulldog and is going to create trouble for people.

A gripping season finale with a cliff-hanger ending
Tweekums21 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
When a burnt body is found in the dunes near Aberystwyth it is quickly identified as Aron Bowen; a man who was recently released from prison after completing his sentence for the murder of his wife. Suspicion inevitably falls on his wife's family but they aren't the only ones with motives; Aron's brother and his wife raise Aron's daughter Ffion as their own and might not have wanted her father getting back into her life, also Aron always claimed to be innocent; if that was the case the real killer might have struck again. As the case progresses it is clear that nobody approved of Aron's marriage and DCI Tom Mathias's boss, Chief Supt Prosser, doesn't want any questioning of the verdict in Aron's murder trial.

This episode was a solid end to the second season; the case wasn't overly convoluted and had plenty of suspects with differing motives to keep the viewer guessing. There is also the question of whether Aron was actually guilty of killing his wife… the fact that senior people didn't want Mathias looking into that possibility certainly made the claim plausible. Further intrigue is provide by the suggestion that DS Sian Owens is involved with one of the suspects. As well as a fine mystery we get some emotional scenes as it looks as though Mathias could be dealing with another suicide of somebody involved in a case. The drama doesn't end with the arrest of Aron's killer… the final scene provides a cliff-hanger that sets things up for a third series.
