Even as he collected his martini, the burly stranger who introduced himself as “Joe” exuded an aura of belligerence. We were standing on the fringe of a post-screening reception, so, hand extended, I blurted, “Did the movie work for you?”
“It was blah,” he replied. “Given what they spent for the script, they should have made a powerful f*ckin’ movie.”
At the time I didn‘t realize I was talking with Joe Eszterhas, who had made $4 million from sale of his script — more an auction than a sale and hardly “blah.” Joe and several estimable writing colleagues were participants in what came to be known in the mid-‘80s as the “Writers Rebellion,” a moment when top screenwriters decided to reinvent what they considered a broken system for propagating their creative product.

It’s easy to take the Aliens vs. Predator franchise for granted years after the crossover became mainstream, but long-time fans remember that it was actually quite the long journey to get this far. With a shared universe originally being teased at the end of Predator 2, our favorite movie monsters initially had to duke it out in the pages of cult comic-books and a series of hit video games that once dominated the licensed market.
In fact, from the 90s to the early 2000s, the Avp games were legendary due to their distinct gameplay and innovative multiplayer elements. However, after the release of a failed reboot in the seventh console generation, the series mostly faded into obscurity. Sure, we’d see great individual Alien and Predator titles (like 2014’s Alien: Isolation and IllFonic’s Predator: Hunting Grounds), but it seems like the rights holders have no interest in giving these creatures an updated rematch.

Prismatic Ground is becoming a must-attend filmmaker-centered showcase on the rise for underground documentaries, avant-garde, and experimental cinema in the heart of New York City. Founded by Maysles Documentary Center co-programming director Inney Prakash, the initial virtual festival counter-responded to the approaches of many institutions that have inadequately handled virtual exhibitions and poorly supported artists. Prismatic Ground pays filmmakers screening fees, doesn’t divide features and shorts via “waves,” and merges early career and established voices in its accessible presentation of politically engaged, personal, and speculative imagery.
As this hybrid festival adapts the in-person components each subsequent year, the 3rd Prismatic Ground will present works at the Museum of the Moving Image, Maysles Documentary Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dctv’s Firehouse Cinema, Light Industry, and Anthology Film Archives with limited selections available online.

In what marks a first for Chile’s Storyboard Media, Baremo Films of Mexico has boarded its psychological thriller “Quizas es cierto lo que dicen de nosotras” (“Maybe It’s True What They’re Saying About Us”), which has been shooting in Santiago since Feb. 1 and will wrap later this month.
Written and directed by Sofía Gomez (“Trastornos del sueño”) and Camilo Becerra (“Perro muerto”), the co-production also involves Chile’s La Jauria Cine as well as Argentina’s Murillo Cine and HDArgentina.
“We’re delighted to have our first co-production with Mexico, which is such an important market, given its relevance in terms of promotion and visibility in our region,” said Storyboard Media’s Gabriela Sandoval and Carlos Núñez.
The co-production pact with Baremo Films’ Pablo Modragon was closed at the Berlinale, said Sandoval.

For much of this year’s awards conversation, The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have dominated in the major categories – but at the 2023 BAFTAs_ that cleaned up. Edward Berger’s film bagged seven awards on the night including Best Film – building up momentum throughout the show as it won multiple technical categories and major gongs over the course of the ceremony.
“For a German-language film, we’ve been blessed with so many nominations, and winning this is just incredible,” said producer Malte Grunert on stage while picking up Best Film. The film’s big wins also came freighted with the relevancy of its World War I story. Upon winning Adapted Screenplay, writer-director Berger noted that in five days time it will be a year since war began in Ukraine, and stated that: “There are no heroes in any war.”

The BFI today said it will invest 7 million (£6 million) of National Lottery “good cause” funding over three years in Doc Society.
The cash award is part of the BFI’s rollout for its new National Lottery Strategy and will go toward supporting the documentary-focused non-profit in its distribution of funding across features, shorts and talent development.
The BFI Doc Society Fund will also be open for applications from April-June 2023. Recruitment will start imminently for a new executive who will lead the fund, working closely with Sandra Whipham and Shanida Scotland, Directors of Doc Society.
The BFI has said Doc Society will also “develop and evolve” the funding and support it offers filmmakers from April 2023 to meet the new BFI’s new National Lottery strategic priorities. These structural changes will include a stronger focus on regional and national opportunities through the BFI Doc Society Fund to support features and shorts.

BAFTA has unveiled the longlists across all categories for its 2023 Film Awards, and Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy The Banshees Of Inisherin and Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front lead.
Martin McDonagh’s impressive Banshees haul includes Best Director, Film, and Screenplay nods while Colin Farrell is up for Leading Actor and Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon were handed Best Support Actor and Actress nods.
Charlotte Well’s festival favorite Aftersun appears on eight lists, including Best Film, Director, and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Other titles that are well represented today include Oliver Hermanus’s Living and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
In notable snubs, James Cameron’s Avatar sequel The Way of Water did not make either the Best Film or Director longlists. The box office hit is absent from all major categories but shows strongly in craft categories, including Sound and Special Visual Effects.

With every episode, "Andor" proves to be both unlike anything "Star Wars" has ever done, and one of the best things in the "Star Wars" universe. The show's cinematography is distinct and more immersive than the blue screen and Stagecraft-heavy Disney+ shows we've seen so far. The writing is smart, tense, and surprising, even in spite of it being a prequel series leading to an outcome we already know about. Speaking to our own Ethan Anderton, Luna explained how his casting as Andor for "Rogue One" added a layer to the character that would otherwise not be there. Luna does not just bring...
