Sitting at a capacious round table filled with half-a-dozen entertainment reporters, Gary Oldman describes himself as a fan of television. “Some of the best stuff you see is on your television screen,” he said. “I love long-form.”
Frankly, this isn’t the first time a movie star who’s new to television has praised the medium printing his paychecks. But Oldman — in a winding, hourlong conversation pegged to “Slow Horses,” his first TV role as a series regular — really does seem to love the visual art of serialized narratives. During the December luncheon (hosted by Apple in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood), he brought up a dozen shows, often unprompted, and even quoted his favorite line from “Succession” off the cuff.
“God, [Brian] Cox had one of the greatest lines when he said, ‘What is that smell in here? It’s like a cheesemonger died and left his cock in the brie,...

Exclusive: Channel 4’s television audience sunk to a record low in May amid a painful period for the British broadcaster, which is cutting costs as it navigates a cratering ad market.
Channel 4’s main network audience share stood at 4.48% last month, which is said to be the worst four-week period in the commercial broadcaster’s 40-year history.
One source said the ratings had sparked scenes of “panic” at Channel 4, though other insiders were more philosophical and pointed to bumper online viewing.
Audiences streamed a record 5Bn minutes of Channel 4 content in April, with shows including Married At First Sight Australia performing well. May’s digital performance was also up 20% year on year.
Despite the shift to streaming, television viewing remains foundational to Channel 4’s commercial health, with linear advertising accounting for less than 70% of its £1Bn ($1.3Bn) revenue.
Channel 4’s record low audience share was echoed in other ratings data.

Reality television has taken the world by storm. One of the most popular shows in recent years is Married at First Sight. The show depicts a team of experts who matches up couples to meet for the first time at the altar. The couples are then expected to live together for several weeks and see if they can make their marriage work. It’s a high-pressure situation, and tensions often run high.
The Australian version of the show has been particularly successful, drawing in millions of viewers each season. However, the revelation from a former contestant that they were instructed not to talk to each other when the cameras were off raised questions about just how “real” the show is.

Different regions bring out different vibes from reality TV shows, even when they’re technically part of a familiar franchise. Married at First Sight: Australia might be one of the most significant examples of this. And the precedent it set was so striking, that other international versions are starting to follow suit.
The Australian take on the long-running romantic reality series technically has lower stakes. To make up for the switched-up premise, producers tweaked the format to produce more drama. It’s a hit with viewers, but one contestant was uncomfortable with what producers wanted them to say for the cameras.
