1.106: Sonnet #103: Straight delivery that doesn't really use the well-chosen location particularly well
bob the moo9 October 2015
This sonnet is one of those where the writer claims that his work is really of no use or merit, because really what can he add to such great beauty - putting it into words almost seems a waste when you could just look upon it yourself, it needs no explanation. In this short film, this is taken to be spoken less as praise, but with an element of writer's block and frustration about this situation. As such we see the actor scribbling on walls, searching for inspiration, and ultimately taking a drink with failed efforts around him. The delivery otherwise is fairly direct, although this context does add a little bit. I was not sure why the music had such a heavy hand and imposing feel to it, nor did I get the idea of the woman drifting through the background. As a result the film felt like it was simpler than it probably was, although it was still a solid delivery of the text.

The choice of location is a good one if you know the literary connection of the Algonquin Hotel (specifically the meeting of the Algonquin round table). I am not sure how widely this is known though; for me I only know it because of the film on Dorothy Parker from the 1990's. This does seem important though, because if you know this connection then it really doesn't matter what the film does with the location in the film, because you will know the reason. However if you do not know this connection, then there is nothing in the film to really tell you why the film is set there; and there is nothing in the film that really uses the location in terms of connecting to this history clearly – instead it just feels like it could be a regular bar somewhere.

So, not one of the strongest shorts in the series, but another solid filmed delivery that at least does that, even if it doesn't add too much to the text by seeing it delivered.
