Ahead of the Doctor Who Christmas special, which is just one week away now, the BBC has dropped this short new featurette which dives behind the scenes of Peter Capaldi’s final days on set, as he prepares to say goodbye to the Twelfth Doctor.
“It’s a total privilege to be here for Peter’s exit,” explains Mark Gatiss, who’s guest starring in the episode, which is titled “Twice Upon a Time.” He then reveals that, at the same moment he was filming his interview, Capaldi was shooting his regeneration elsewhere at the studio.
In a chat with the man himself, presumably shot much earlier during production, the outgoing Time Lord said that his impending exit from the show wasn’t affecting him at that stage, as he was still knee-deep in the role.
“It’s quite odd, really. It’s this strange situation where I don’t...

We’re hope you’re getting excited, boys and girls, ‘cos we’re now just over a week away from Christmas. And we all know what that means, right? You got it – the annual Doctor Who yuletide special is almost here!
Ahead of the episode’s arrival on December 25th, the BBC have dropped this new clip (above) from the upcoming outing, titled “Twice Upon a Time.” The minute-long sequence throws us right in the middle of the action, with the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi), the First Doctor (David Bradley), Bill (Pearl Mackie) and Mark Gatiss’ mystery Wwi Captain making a getaway in the Tardis. Except, there’s a twist.
Following on from the end of the season 10 finale, “The Doctor Falls,” in which the Doctor encountered his original self in the Antarctic, “Twice Upon a Time” will see the two Time Lords and their friends caught up in a...

She might have exited the show a whole five years ago now, but Karen Gillan is still happy to talk about Doctor Who.
While promoting her latest movie – the surprisingly great Jumanji: Welcome the Jungle – the Avengers: Infinity War actress was asked about what she thinks of Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor. She made clear that she’s on board with the idea of a woman playing the Time Lord and in fact, it really bothers her that a subset of fans were “skeptical” about the Doctor’s change of gender.
“That was major for the show, it’s never happened before. And there were so many people that were skeptical, and it just bothered me. Because of course a female could play a role, that’s insane.”
It’s no surprise that Karen Gillan has proven herself to be one of Jodie Whittaker’s biggest supporters.

Doctor Who fans are prepared to cry like Weeping Angels this Christmas Day as “Twice Upon a Time” is set to be the Twelfth Doctor’s final bow, with Peter Capaldi handing the keys to the Tardis to Jodie Whittaker by the end of the episode. Regenerations are usually heartbreaking fare, but one of the cast members has now suggested that this one will actually be heartwarming.
David Bradley (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) is set to guest star in the special as the First Doctor, with Capaldi coming face to face with his original incarnation. While speaking to ComicBook.com, Bradley praised the episode for its good-heartedness and even went as far as to compare it to one of the most beloved Christmas classics of all-time.
“It’s full of good-heartedness. I would say even if you have never seen Doctor Who before, I think you will love it.

True to the old adage of one door opening just as another begins to close, this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, “Twice Upon a Time,” will herald the beginning of a “whole new era.”
At least, that’s according to long-time screenwriter Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), who is poised to appear as a Wwi soldier known only as ‘The Captain’ in the imminent festive treat. While appearing on ITV chat show Lorraine (with a tip of the hat to Digital Spy), Gatiss previewed Jodie Whittaker’s first appearance as the Time Lord, before hinting that he has no involvement in season 11, which will see current showrunner Steven Moffat hand over the keys to Chris Chibnall.
It’s fantastic. What I love about this, I love the costume – I call it ‘Godspell chic’. It’s got a lovely early ’70s feel to it, which I really like. I think it’s a fantastic choice,...

The biggest talking point surrounding the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special is, of course, how it’s Peter Capaldi’s final hour, before he regenerates into Jodie Whittaker. But it’s worth remembering that the episode, titled “Twice Upon a Time,” is also the last one to be written by showrunner Steven Moffat, before he hands over the keys to the Tardis to new guy Chris Chibnall.
Moffat has helmed the show for the past seven years, casting and overseeing the whole eras of both Matt Smith and Capaldi’s Doctors. Though he’s also known for creating BBC’s Sherlock, he’s never been shy about showing his love for Doctor Who above all else. And, now that he’s leaving, he’s taken the time to give a touching speech about why he believes the sci-fi series is the best TV show ever made.

The incoming Doctor Who Christmas special has a lot going for it. It’s Peter Capaldi’s final hour, it sees him team up with David Bradley’s First Doctor, Pearl Mackie’s Bill will return and there’s even a guest role for Mark Gatiss. Despite all that, the big talking point is the fact that it will feature Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Thirteenth Doctor in the episode’s last few moments.
This is something that outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat understands and accepts. In fact, he thinks the mix of excitement for the new Doctor with grief for the loss of the current actor is a classic part of the Doctor Who viewing experience.

There are many plot holes that keep Doctor Who fans up at night. For instance, why did no one ever mention John Hurt’s incarnation of the Doctor before he was retroactively introduced in 2013? Why do the rules of regeneration change every time? And why don’t the Daleks ever just shoot the Doctor?
Of course, most of these continuity glitches have arisen simply because Doctor Who has been written by countless different writers for the past 50 years, meaning that obviously not everything will fit together smoothly. However, one fan might just have an explanation for a particular narrative conundrum that actually holds up.
The plot hole is this: why does the Doctor always encounter other Time Lords – like the Master – in chronological order? For instance, Peter Capaldi’s incarnation always bumped into Michelle Gomez’s version in a linear fashion. But why doesn’t he keep catching her out of order?...

Here's our spoiler-free look at the Doctor Who Christmas special, Twice Upon A Time...
This review is spoiler-free. It talks about, at most, stuff that's been revealed in promo photos, but not more than that.
Twice Upon A Time
Really rather special, this one. Appreciating that pretty much everyone knows where Steven Moffat’s final Doctor Who story – Twice Upon A Time – has to ultimately end (an ending that was sliced off the press preview), the journey the story takes is really quite something.
It kicks off, of all things, with the kind of recap that only Doctor Who could get away with, before resuming where things were left at the end The Doctor Falls. Two Doctors – David Bradley as the first Doctor, Peter Capaldi as the incumbent – holding off their own regeneration. Neither willing to succumb to the change and uncertainty that lies ahead.

Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a treat for the fans, but the episode due to air in just under two weeks now is a real must-see. Not only will it feature Peter Capaldi’s last hurrah as the Twelfth Doctor, with Jodie Whittaker making her debut as No. 13 by the end of the episode, but it will also see the return of the First Doctor. That’s three Doctors for the price of one!
Taking over the part of the original Time Lord is David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter), who already has some experience with the role as he previously played First Doctor actor William Hartnell in the 2013 biopic An Adventure in Space and Time. His impersonation of Hartnell impressed fans so much, in fact, that he was a natural choice to play the Doctor for real in the special. However, it’s not something that he ever expected.

We’ve now got less than two weeks to go before Christmas Day is here. Unfortunately for Doctor Who fans though, that comes with mixed emotions. While the annual holiday special is set to give us our first glimpse at Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, it also means we have to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi’s twelfth incarnation in the process. The Scottish actor has absolutely owned the role over the past few years and it’s going to be tough to see him go.
Now, with his exit quickly approaching, the BBC has released a short new promo that briskly runs through the greatest moments of the Twelfth Doctor from the past four years of the show. Though not terribly long, it does a good job of compressing nearly all of Capaldi’s most memorable scenes and speeches into a fairly short space of time.

While talking with Radio Times ahead of the release of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in the UK, Gillan got chatting once again on how ecstatic she is that Jodie Whittaker has been cast as the Thirteenth Doctor, praising both the actress herself and the decision to gender swap the Time Lord.
I’m more excited than ever! I think that was the best, most perfect choice. She’s an amazing actress. I can’t wait to see what she does with the role, and I’m just so happy that they’ve cast a female, because there have been so many sceptical people for so long.

Some people like to spend the holidays with family, or shopping for the perfect present. More indoors-y types enjoy binge-watching classic Christmas movies. But for a Doctor Who fan, the perfect Christmas is gorging on as many episodes of the sci-fi series as humanly possible without the aid of a Tardis. Thankfully, BBC America have Whovians covered this yuletide.
Beginning Tuesday, December 19, the network will air a whopping 168 hour marathon showcasing adventures from the past three incarnations of the Doctor!

With that sort of time frame to cover, it’s likely that BBC America will simply play the entire run from David Tennant’s debut in 2005’s “The Christmas Invasion” all the way until 2017’s “The Doctor Falls,” the finale of the recent season 10, encompassing the full 109 episodes in between.

The second trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, titled “Twice Upon a Time,” has now arrived and it teases the big moment we all know to expect, when Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor regenerates.
Despite only clocking it at 40 seconds, the preview packs in a lot of footage for fans to dissect. And yeah, yeah, yeah — it’ll get to Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker. Before that ultimate regeneration, however, the First Doctor comes back into our lives circa David Bradley. After the initial furore over Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor back in July subsided, most seemed to be on board – or, at least, have come to terms – with the decision to make the Time Lord a woman. That said, one former Doctor Who star – in fact, arguably the most iconic Doctor Who star of them all – has revealed that he would have preferred a different actress to take the part.
The Fourth Doctor himself, Tom Baker, was speaking with GQ when the topic of the new Doctor inevitably came up. First, let’s clarify that Baker is totally on board with Whittaker’s casting, as he mentioned that he was “thrilled” with the decision and is sure she’ll be “marvellous.”
“I was thrilled! So long as the girl comes over as an alien, a benevolent alien, she’ll be marvellous. I wish the girl the very greatest of luck.

As the first woman to land the leading role in Doctor Who, much was made of her casting back in July as for many fans, the change had been a long time coming.
In a new interview with the Radio Times, outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat took the time to explain why – though he completely supports the idea – he never cast a woman during his tenure. First of all, he said that “it wouldn’t have worked” if he had replaced David Tennant with an actress back in 2010, as it was “too early.”
Moffat then touched on how there was a possibility of the Twelfth Doctor being a woman, before he got excited over casting Peter Capaldi.

First broadcast in 2007, the spooky instalment came by way of Hettie MacDonald, who directed from a script by Steven Moffat (Sherlock). If that name rings a bell, it should; Moffat would later take over as showrunner of the hit BBC series, though his contribution to “Blink” is still remembered fondly among Whovians, given it’s often held up as one of the best episodes in the history of Doctor Who – no mean feat, mind you.
And now, in anticipation of the festive extravaganza, “Twice Upon a Time,” which will soon signal the end of his tenure and that of Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat has confirmed that Carey Mulligan was approached about a possible recurring role as a companion.

As the 11th season of Doctor Who rapidly approaches, it’s beginning to look like the show is set to the ring in the changes in more ways than one. While certain corners of the fandom reacted somewhat vigorously to the news that the titular character will now be played by a woman – Jodie Whittaker – it’s rumoured that this change is just one component of a full scale overhaul for the iconic television property.
The refit for the flagship BBC sci-fi series undoubtedly starts with a changing of the showrunning guard, with Steven Moffat departing to make way for the incoming Chris Chibnall. This change in leadership is evidently having something of a trickle-down effect, with alterations being made to both the fabric and format of episodes, too. But that’s not all, as the show will also be getting an upgraded look when it returns, thanks to some fancy new cameras.

While Peter Capaldi’s regeneration will undoubtedly be angled as the fitting finale to “Twice Upon a Time,” it seems the Doctor Who Christmas Special includes another scene that is just as emotional.
At least, that’s according to BBC Radio host Jo Whiley (via Radio Times), who paid a visit to Doctor Who‘s festive-themed set just as filming was beginning to wrap. It’s all part of a new radio documentary – entitled Jo Whiley’s Access All Areas Special, it’ll air via BBC2 on Thursday 21st December, so keep your eyes peeled and ears cocked – but perhaps most exciting of all is Whiley’s comments about a scene that left “everyone in tears.”
It’s definitely not Peter Capaldi’s regeneration, which itself has been described as a tour-de-force; instead, Jo Whiley draws attention to a tear-jerker that is not so much about the famous Time Lord...

Not for the first time, former Doctor Who companion John Barrowman has come out in defense of Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the first female Time Lord.
While appearing on Good Morning Britain (via Radio Times) to promote his involvement in the Manchester Opera House, Barrowman hailed Whittaker’s addition as a “great” boost for the Doctor Who franchise. The Broadchurch actress is due to make her first real appearance in next month’s festive special, “Twice Upon a Time,” and it’s fair to say that Whovians are already beside themselves with excitement.
Chris Chibnall will be the one directing Jodie Whittaker come 2018, and when John Barrowman was pressed about the concept of a female Doctor, the actor responded as so:
There’s no Gallifreyan law in the Gallifreyan text that says it has to be a man. I think it’s about time… we should give her a chance.

BBC America has doled out an early Christmas present — the new trailer and stills for the Christmas tradition of a Doctor Who special! Twice Upon A Time, this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, boasts a sentimental goodbye to Peter Capaldi as the twelfth Doctor. The episode also features Nikki Amuka-Bird as the voice of the glass woman, with The Strain and Game of Thrones star David Bradley perfectly cast as the slightly cantankerous very first Doctor. Additionally, Pearl Mackie stars as Bill Potts and Mark Gatiss as The Captain. The new clip reveals a snippet of the theme of...read more...

With the Christmas Special mere weeks away, the BBC have released the official synopsis for Peter Capaldi’s final adventure as Doctor Who – and adventure which sees Twelfth Doctor (Capaldi) team up with his former self, the first ever Doctor (played again by David Bradley), and a returning Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), for one last time…
Two Doctors stranded in an Arctic snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. Enchanted glass people, stealing their victims from frozen time. And a World War One captain destined to die on the battlefield, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story. An uplifting new tale about the power of hope in humanity’s darkest hours, Twice Upon A Time marks the end of an era. But as the Doctor must face his past to decide his future, his journey is only just beginning…

After flying off with her space puddle girlfriend to see the universe (just roll with it) at the end of season 10, it looked like we’d seen the last of the Doctor’s latest companion, Bill Potts. It was a welcome surprise, then, when the Christmas special trailer announced that Pearl Mackie would be returning one last time for Peter Capaldi’s final hour on Doctor Who.
However, it was still shrouded in mystery exactly what Bill’s role in the episode would be. Was she due to make a quick cameo? Or would she stick around for the whole outing? Unfortunately, we still don’t have an answer, but it would seem that she’ll be fairly involved, as a new motion poster for the special has dropped and it features Mackie’s character along with the two Doctors.
There’s nothing here that’ll stop the presses, but...

Have you heard? David Tennant and Billie Piper are returning to their iconic Doctor Who roles as the Tenth Doctor and his beloved Rose Tyler! Oh, we should probably clarify that we’re talking about a new boxset of audio dramas, rather than a comeback on the small screen. But hey, that’s still cool, right? You bet your sweet sonic screwdriver it is.
The Tenth Doctor Adventures Vol. 2 is the second release to see Tennant reprise the role that he bowed out of on TV back on New Year’s Day 2010, when he regenerated into Matt Smith. In the first boxset, he was joined by Catherine Tate, who starred opposite him as Donna Noble in the 2008 series. That was a real treat, but a reunion for the Doctor and Rose is what a lot of fans were really hoping for, as few Doctor-companion pairings before or since have managed...

Before we meet Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth – and first ever female – Doctor, we have to make a sad farewell to Peter Capaldi’s current version of the iconic character. The actor will put in his last appearance as the Time Lord in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, titled “Twice Upon A Time,” which will see him teaming up with the First Doctor (played by Harry Potter‘s David Bradley).
We don’t know too much about what’s in store for us just yet, but writer Steven Moffat has previously revealed that the episode will explore how different the Doctor is now to when he first started. That’s certainly an interesting route to head down, and if recent comments from DJ Jo Whiley are any indication, we should expect something fairly emotional from the upcoming outing as well.

To say that Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor sparked debate online would be a massive understatement, but there’s no question that most, if not all of the reactions that have surfaced since the big announcement have been overwhelmingly positive.
Be it former Doctors or Steven Moffat himself – the outgoing showrunner who will bid adieu to Doctor Who following this year’s Christmas Special – many of the show’s key players have voiced their support of Whittaker in the titular role. And Matt Smith is no different.
Having heaped praise on the incoming Doctor several times already, the actor was recently asked if he’d have any interest in returning to the sci-fi series to team up with Jodie at some point. Unsurprisingly, he seems into the idea, but not just yet.
“Why not? I’d come back,” Smith told MTV. “Yeah, if the timing was right.

Incoming Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker has been pictured filming a nighttime scene with her new companion, Graham (The Chase‘s Bradley Walsh).
Said to be completely unrelated to next month’s Christmas Special, which will herald our first true look at Whittaker in action, the prying eyes of the Daily Mail managed to snap these photos in some unspecified wooded area, as the Doctor and Graham infiltrate an industrial factory.
It’s impossible to gauge the context of this scene based on a horde of unofficial set photos, but the Daily Mail’s report does suggest that a stand-in for the Tardis was just out of shot, which would explain why Whittaker’s protagonist is clutching on to an Asian (Japanese?) bag. Graham is also equipped with a pair of wire-cutters, so perhaps our dynamic duo are about to embark on a top-secret mission come 2018?

Much of the chatter about the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, titled “Twice Upon a Time,” is to do with the fact that it’ll feature a rare return for the First Doctor (as played by David Bradley) and that Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor will make her debut in the episode’s final moments. However, let’s not forget that it also marks Peter Capaldi’s final bow as the Time Lord.

You neophytes may not know it, but the Tardis is a pretty big deal in the world of “Doctor Who.” The device — whose name may or may not be an acronym — has long been used by Doctors to travel through time, probably, and will next be occupied by the 13th Doctor. Before Jodie Whittaker takes residence in that iconic vessel, however, the folks at BBC are treating fans to a preview in which the First Doctor comes upon the Twelfth Doctor’s Tardis.
