Warning: Spoilers
This was a gripping episode and it was setting up for a great trial but the next episode had nothing to do with it.

Half a Second Longer: Boiling water, Bleeding Wound, Dark Project, Hot line, hot contact, non-swallowing iron bite
yazguloner30 December 2021
It is one of the darkest gray cases dominated by Chaos. Police Violence against Protection Procedure; Extrajudicial Execution issues against Rape Suspect...

We are in a tragic case that is chaotic, rigid and difficult. We witnessed this heat, self-protection moments and suspicious issues in the 15×3 American Tragedy episode where Cybill Sheperd was a guest. It was individual and more personal.

This episode is about community. The blood is flowing from both sides in the matters of what is difficult to eat or swallow. Unfortunately, the whole society is sick.

Barba is getting bigger and bigger with his performance in this episode.

Liv and barba court scene, barba and detective defenses are very good.

Good to see Leslie Odom Jr and Ed Tucker.

Officer Shooting is the main story
labenji-121633 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am writing this review to address the reviewers who think that the initial attack & rape of the family in the opening was the main story, it is not. The main story is the shooting of Terrance Howard and the community outcry that follows.

I believe SVU writers did an outstanding job by presenting a horrific crime to get the viewers engaged and on the side of law enforcement, then throwing the viewer a curveball when it turns out that the wrong person was gunned down. It helped me, as an person of color see from a different perspective -- that of the police. However, we the viewer did not see the shooting, nor do I need to see it to know that 46 shoots being fired at one individual less than 50 feet away is excessive. Yet, I also thought runnin, g from the police and trying to turn around while they are screaming at you is just plan stupid.

As a law bidding person of color, had the officers only fired 3 shots, considering the back story of why they were out there and what was going on, I would have found them not guilty of any wrong doing, because the young man, while innocent, gave the officer cause to shoot by not stopping and following their directive.

Unsettlement in the community
TheLittleSongbird20 September 2022
Anybody who has read any of my other reviews for for example individual episodes of the 'Law and Order' shows, am slowly working my way through writing reviews for all the episodes of 'Law and Order, 'Special Victims Unit' and a couple of the lesser known shows later with a long way to go, will know already how much admiration there is from me for anything that tackles difficult and controversial themes and issues. The topic here did sound interesting and quite brave.

It is unfortunately an interesting and relevant topic, that is brave too, that could have been handled a good deal better in "Community Policing". After such a great previous episode in "Institutional Fail", this was a disappointment. Not quite one of the worst episodes of Season 17, but it is towards the lesser end and the season's first disappointment. Really liked the idea, but the execution just wasn't there on the whole. Or at least it wasn't consistent.

"Community Policing" does have good things. The photography and such as usual are fully professional, the slickness still remaining. The music is used sparingly and is haunting and non-overwrought when it is used, and it's mainly used when a crucial revelation or plot development is revealed.

The best thing about it is Raul Esparza, Barba is not in his comfort zone with this case but the usual authority and sass are present and Esparza embodies all that. Mariska Hargitay fares strongly too and Olivia is steely while still being in character. The acting is above average and nobody comes off badly, but only Esparza reaches brilliance in my view.

However, the story could have been handled a lot better than it was. The topic is a very good one, the problem is that it is not delved into anywhere near enough, being too on the surface without ever going underneath that or providing much insightful. It is very rushed from trying to cram in too much, which makes the story lose clarity and coherence at times as well. Also found it very heavy handed and one sided, it's too obvious what side of the issues the writers are on while not doing much with the other side of the argument.

Furthermore, the ending felt very tacked on and abrupt and there are no surprises or tension, and this is a case that did need quite a lot of the latter. Everything is foreseeable well before it happens, apart from one part and not for the better. The Rollins reveal comes over as really awkward and out of the blue (due to not seeing the relationship in question in that way beforehand). Really didn't like either how Fin and Carisi were too much like underused window dressing and the script could have been a good deal tighter.

Overall, could have been a lot better. 5/10.

To Be Continued...
wrenleung6 April 2020
... but it doesn't. The first episode of the season was action packed and lead to satisfying closure in the second episode. We don't get that after this episode. All that build up for nothing.

Off track
bkoganbing26 October 2019
This almost seemed like the launching of another TV pilot with Isaih Whitlock, Jr. as captain of the 12th precinct and a cast of potential regulars from said precinct. In any event the SVU squad joins with members of the 12th to catch a break-in rapist who in this case targeted a whole family.

That terrible incident is reduced to nothing as an innocent kid is shot and killed and everyone gets caught up in that. The whole episode goes off track and the original crime is almost forgotten.

Not a good one for SVU.

USELESS WAY TO ADDRESS A HOT TOPIC
nadiaspurway1 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
They started this episode with traumatic rape of a mother and child with dad bashed but make it mostly about police shooting a POC... I get it's a hot topic but they've completely forgotten about the original case... I get that police shooting POC happens way too often in America and that something needs to be done and it's important to address it in shows like this however they've done people an injustice by completely forgetting about the case that started the show and the people in that case didn't receive justice. And the families advocate (the family of the POC killed) just wanted his five seconds of fame to address his own agenda. Once the cops shot the POC it was as if the original family and other victims of the actual rapist were forgotten. Useless.

Worse episode ever
qxnwztyr17 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is the worse episode so far I have watched. It was disgusting and outrageous see the Olivia Benson's behavior, authorizing incursions without the warrant, incentiveting the police to break the law. The worse was when she was trying to bend the true to justify the unjustified shooting for three cops over a innocent man. This is not Olivia Benson behavior. Rollins all the time passing information to the cops, even the Internal Affairs changing the true, moving the deposition to a lie. Definitely this is an episode to forget. This is not what the tv show built during 17 seasons. They behave like Chicago PD, who are dirty cops. If the show continues with this path, I'll stop to watch.
