Siege of darkness

When 'Once Upon a Time' first started it was highly addictive and made the most of a truly great and creative premise. Really loved the idea of turning familiar fairy tales on their heads and putting own interpretations on them and the show early on clearly had clearly had a ball. Watched it without fail every time it came on and it was often a highlight of the week. Which was why it was sad when it ran out of ideas and lost its magic in the later seasons.

Season 5 had a lot to live up to after Season 4 being as impressive as it was. As far as Season 4's episodes go, they were all decent to brilliant with the only small dip being "Family Business" (though "Heart of Gold" was uneven) and the best being the "Smash the Mirror" two parter, "Best Laid Plans", "Mother" and the first part of "Operation Mongoose". So was expecting a good deal from Season 5 and "The Dark Swan" didn't disappoint at all. All the episodes between that and this ranged to me from decent to brilliant.

"Swan Song" is good still but a bit of a let down, especially with some of the previous episodes being so strong. Am afraid to say that my opinion is in agreement of the conflicted opinions here rather than the generally positive consensus from the critics. There are a lot of great things but there were a few things that could have been significantly better.

Its main problem is that there is too much going on and there is a jumpy nature to it, meaning it can get too over-complicated. Plot points are not as clear as they should and some don't feel resolved or finished through. Some of the writing is a bit cornball and could have been tighter.

Also do agree about Rumplestiltskin. Absolutely adore the character, but how he's written is both inconsistent and senseless, actually feeling like his character writing had gone backwards when he is actually one of the show's most complex characters.

However, there is lots of evidence of forward momentum and character development advancing and the set up for what's to come showing potential. The story has enough moments where it is absorbing and balanced with assurance and coherence on the whole. What really makes "Swan Song" is the character interaction, particularly with Hook and Emma, and the emotional impact, the final moments do wrench the heart and Hook's development is interesting and doesn't go round in circles.

All the acting is strong, with deeply felt performances from Jennifer Morrison and Colin O'Donoghue. Can never fault Lana Parrilla, Rebecca Mader and especially Robert Carlyle either.

Furthermore, "Swan Song" is a very handsomely mounted episode visually, the settings and costumes are both colourful and atmospheric, not too dark or garish and never cookie cutter. It is photographed beautifully too. The music is haunting, ethereal and cleverly used with a memorable theme tune.

Writing has the right balance of humour, pathos, mystery and intrigue mostly, though as said it is not perfect. This aspect has come on such a long way since when 'Once Upon a Time' first started, much more complexity and nuance, or at least at this point before it took a nosedive in the last season.

Altogether, decent episode but could have been better. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Drowning Swan

Warning: Spoilers
Warning don't read unless seen episode.

Alright I may'be in the minority on this but personally I thought this first plot line of the season was a letdown. The biggest problem with the plot line for me was that it got overly complicated for it's own good to the point where nothing really came together and it really left way too many plot holes.

Don't get me wrong I thought this finale was decent but like I said decent, the bad really outweighed the good for me. I'll get don't to the bad first.

I really hated that twist with Rumple near the end because it not just contradicted everything he did in this part of the season, it's also created a lot of inconsistencies like if he was going this route all this time then how could he of been worthy to pull Excalabur out? But worst of all it made what happened at the end with both Hook and Emma completely pointless.

I really don't want Rumple to be the main villain again because we have already been down this road twice it's really gotten old, use a new villain; but if they do then just please kill him off because I'm done with his character we need to move on.

I also feel like the characters Regina included had nothing to do in this episode. When I heard that the legion of Dark Ones were coming to invade the reality realm, I thought it was going to be awesome where we will see an epic battle/s where all the Storybroke party were going to defend themselves from them. But we don't get that at all, even in that one scene where their all gathered together ready to be sent to the Underworld; I was thinking cmon use your magic, shoot some arrows/bullets, take your swords out do something. Sure may'be it would of been a brief battle and they wouldn't of lasted long against the Dark Ones but at least they will go down fighting and not just stand there like dunces.

Now, I'll get down to the good. I really like how Regina finally dealt with that crazy b.... Zelena whom I'll admit has been nothing but a third wheel throughout the season which is another weak point for the plot line. We see the wand of the apprentice finally works for her, yeah she has the force and she deports Zelena back to Oz; really loved what Regina said before Zelana was whisked away it cracked me up. I don't feel bad for Zelena, she didn't honor her end of the contract so she gets nothing, strike three b.... your out. If Zelena is gone for good I'm fine with that we need to move on, or she could come back for the final season where Regina and her will have a final conflict. I don't know we'll see.

And of course really liked the final moments with both Hook and Emma. We see that Emma does get though to Hook in the end and Hook then starts to use his willpower and override the Dark One's programing, where he was able to stop them as we see him sucking each of the Dark One's into the sword. But then he gives it to Emma to do what she has to do. It was really heart sinking just seeing Emma once again do the right thing but cost her the person she truly loved. We also see she loses her black outfit and white hair and becomes herself again, so in the end she saved not just both the fantasy and reality realms but both her and Hooks souls. Though what I liked about this scene the most was that it wasn't just Emma that saves the day but Hook also which I thought was something different. I wouldn't fret too much because this is a set up for the next plot line.

I won't pass judgment on the season yet because we of course have a secondary plot line which could possibly save the season for me, but like I said possibly. Other than the fact we'll see some old villains again (it is Hell after all) personally I'm interested if their going to get some characters from Greek Myth or any other fantasy villains that we haven't seen yet and tie them in.

I'm also thinking the whole Underworld thing will probably be a small arc, because I have a feeling once the Storybroke party comes back to the reality realm, the town will be conquered by Arthur and anyone else that is still under his power, after all there was that plot line of Arthur planning to turn the reality realm into the new Camalot. I don't know we'll see.

I'm just hoping the Underworld plot line isn't a metaphor for where the whole show is going because due to this plot lines performance it looks like it's just getting there.

Over it

Warning: Spoilers
I won't spend too much time over this because after 5 seasons, I feel I've wasted enough time already. One scene that pretty well summed up where the show has descended to is where Emma and Hook have a confrontation, she with Excalibur in hand which is supposed to have power over him. He turns to smoke twice to evade her, then when she turns around a third time, "Henry" is standing there so she gives him the sword!!! It didn't occur to her that Hook would impersonate Henry? Why would she give the sword to Henry anyway? C grade writing and just ridiculous, and it seems the producers are just trying to string the show out for as long as they can. Se ya later, OUAT.

I give up.

Warning: Spoilers
Character switch between good and evil at a whim. All this back and forth is giving me a major headache. Magic is being invented on the go.

A few episodes ago the pirate suddenly turned evil for no apparent reason and the story line has revolved around that ever since. In this episode, right before Hook finally achieves his evil plan, he suddenly has a change of heart in the last minute. And again without any explanation.

Oh wait, that's not the end of it. After how many transitions between good and bad, Gold went back to being an asshole again, in an instant. AND AGAIN no explanation. What is going on with these people? Bell can't make up her mind about staying with Gold. She keeps leaving and coming back. This is getting old.

And the magic crap keeps piling up. First it's a bunch of dark ones trying to switch places with people on earth. Talk about a stretch. Why now. Why are we JUST finding out about this, right before it's about to happen? This is bad story telling. It's like they're making crap up on the go. No story development whatsoever.

OK fine, so it seems everyone is doomed. But wait, of course someone pulled another magic solution out of their ass - lets put all the dark ones into one person and then kill them. Yea, of course that's possible. Why wouldn't it be? In this show anything goes, no matter how ridiculous.

But hold on a second, that's not ACTUALLY what's going to happen. Gold somehow came up with yet another cool trick that changed everything. All the dark ones will be channeled into him (now with his sudden switch to being evil yet again). And again all this happens in a matter of seconds, with no explanation how this is even possible, or why it's happening.

All the major events in this season are so sudden, random, and unexplained, that I can't keep up with this crap anymore.
