- Ross chairs the meeting for his mine's share-holders, where expansion of Wheal Leisure is approved but Warleggan's spy Tankard is also present and Warleggan's heavies attack Jud for failing to discredit Ross at his trial after their payment to commit perjury. To remain solvent the Poldarks are forced to sell many of their possessions and livestock, causing Demelza to keep her pregnancy secret from her husband. However, following the attack on Jud, Ross realizes Warleggan has schemed to keep Francis and himself at odds and is reconciled with his cousin at a family party, after which Demelza reveals her pregnancy to a far from displeased Ross.—don @ minifie-1
- Ross's enjoyment of his regained freedom is cut short since he needs capital to invest in the mine. The shareholders of Wheal Leisure approve this, despite George's spy Tankard being bought in. Ross and Demelza must sell off nearly all their home's content to settle the annual 40% interest on his £1000 loan. Francis is a reformed man, regaining his joy in life with his son and farm, and even decides to reenter mining and to make up with Ross. Dwight finds clueless MP Unwin Trevaunance's fiancee, Caroline Penvenen, dead-set on being treated by him, for a staged crisis. Jed brags about his testimony clearing Ross, but the overzealous thug instructed to punish his failure to deliver on his false accusation bribe overdoes it, so he's found for dead, yet 'resurrects' while his wife and guests enjoys his lavish funeral.—KGF Vissers
