The 'Undercover Boss: Star Killer Base' sketch was written by Bobby Moynihan and future cast member Mikey Day. Kylo Ren's disguise as 'Matt' became an instant hit with Star Wars fans who began creating customized action figures and cosplay outfits. When Moynihan attended Comic-Con hat year he asked to be in a group photo with a group of 'Matt's who, according to him, did not recognize who he was.
According to Taran Killam, a screen used Kylo Ren costume was shipped from the Lucasfilm archives to be worn by Adam Driver in the 'Undercover Boss: Star Killer Base' sketch. Only the helmet was a replica. Driver signed it for Bobby Moynihan and addressed it to 'Tim', the name of the First Order Stormtrooper Moynihan played: "To Tim, I apologize, Love Matt."
Bobby Moynihan went on to voice several characters in the animated series Star Wars: Resistance (2018), including on occasion a First Order Stormtrooper. In his mind, this canonizes his character 'Tim the trooper' from the 'Undercover Boss: Star Killer Base' sketch.
