Tension at the University of California, Los Angeles, continued over the weekend and into Monday when professors protested outside an A-list gala at the school on Saturday night and another several dozen students were detained on Monday, while investigations into the mob that attacked the pro-Palestine encampment on campus last week continued.
Despite the mass arrests and dismantling of an encampment by police in riot gear that took place on Thursday, pro-Palestine protests carried on Monday at the university. A group of demonstrators was seen zip-tied and being moved by authorities from a UCLA parking garage to an Lacpd bus. The number of protester arrests was 43, according to local news reports Ktla, with those taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary and released after they were processed; all classes have now been moved to remote.

When I first listened to Tk from Ling tosite sigure , it was through Tokyo Ghoul ’s Op, “unravel.” I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that this was many anime fans’ first exposure to the singer because it’s truly iconic. You hear him sing in that high-pitched voice of his, “Oshiete yo, oshiete yo,” the instrumentals kick in, and then you get goosebumps. I’ve said this about many other anime songs, but this one ends up on my karaoke list if I’m feeling brave or want to damage my vocal cords. Tk, or Toru Kitajima, is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and singer-songwriter from the band Ling tosite sigure. He started releasing music as a soloist in 2011, and since then, he has left a major mark in the anime scene. His music style is an acquired taste for some, but for me who’s an emo at heart,...

The Bequeathed is a slow-burn Korean crime thriller streaming on Netflix. The 6-episode show sometimes feels tedious and has a lackluster punch; however, it’s a decent weekend binge-watch, especially with friends, because you can come up with your own theories and find little details to make it more entertaining. But if you’re looking for something more unnerving in terms of plot twists or criminal activity, then some of the shows on this list are going to be feeding you well. Of course, there are the classics like Tunnel, Signal, and Voice that are usually the first on this list, but I’m going to avoid those and give you some slightly newer shows that you may have missed. On the other hand, I’ve also added a couple of shows here that come under the “exasperated” watch list because of how frustrating they are to watch. Anxiety to the roof,...

Some did it out of a sense of obligation. Some did it out of fear of being idle. Some leaned on maternal instinct, and some acted purely out of anger. Whatever the motivation, female writers and showrunners stepped up in record numbers to serve as strike captains during the Writers Guild of America’s five-month contract battle.
“Why did this strike look different? The people at the forefront of it really have been a lot of marginalized writers — writers of color, women and queer writers,” says Caroline Renard, an early career writer-director who was a Disney-based strike captain. She came to the role with plenty of relevant experience as an activist and organizer.
“I’m loud. I know how to talk, and I know how to organize,” she says.

Walter Isaacson’s new Elon Musk biography reveals an alleged altercation between the Twitter/X owner and comedian Larry David that took place at Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel’s wedding last year in Saint-Tropez, France. The event took place just a few days after the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and two teachers were killed. David and Musk were seated at the same wedding table.
Isaacson writes that David “seemed to be fuming” and went up to Musk and asked him, “Do you just want to murder kids in schools?” (via Insider). Musk was allegedly “baffled” and “annoyed” and said, “No, no. I’m anti-kid murder.”
“Then how could you vote Republican?” David reportedly asked Musk.
David confirmed the incident to Isaacson, explaining in the book, “[Musk’s] tweets about voting Republican because Democrats were the party of division and hate were sticking in my craw. Even if Uvalde never happened,...

Cybersecurity researchers have found several spyware-infected versions of Telegram and Signal on the Google Play Store, designed to gather sensitive information from compromised Android devices, a new report has said.
According to the cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, these bogus apps include nefarious features that capture and send names, user IDs, contacts, phone numbers, and chat messages to an actor-controlled server.
The activity has been codenamed “Evil Telegram” by the researchers.
“Our experts discovered several infected apps on Google Play under the guise of Uyghur, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese versions of Telegram. The app descriptions are written in the respective languages and contain images very similar to those on the official Telegram page on Google Play,” the researchers said.

Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working on bringing “third-party chat” support on Android in order to comply with the new European Union (EU) regulations. The new feature will offer users the ability to communicate with each other using different apps, according to WABetaInfo.
For instance, someone from the Signal app could send a message to a WhatsApp user, even without a WhatsApp account.
The feature comes just days after the European Commission confirmed that Meta fits the definition of a “gatekeeper” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (Dma), which mandates that communication software like WhatsApp allow interoperability with third-party messaging apps by March 2024.
According to the report, the feature is still in development and is not ready yet as it appears empty and not accessible to users.
Moreover, the report said that WhatsApp has a six-month period to align the app with the new regulations to provide its interoperability service in the European Union.

San Francisco, Aug 12 (Ians) Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of the collapsed crypto exchange Ftx, has been sent to jail after a judge removed his bail, citing violations like witness tampering.
Bankman-Fried had been on house arrest in California since December 2022 while awaiting trial on fraud and money laundering charges.
According to Inner City Press, judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered late on Friday that he be remanded after prosecutors pushed to have his bail revoked.
They said that Bankman-Fried’s admitted usage of Vpn software to watch an NFL game.
“He subscribed from the Bahamas and used a Vpn as if he were in the Bahamas when he was in Palo Alto and could have watched it on public TV. It shows the mindset. All things considered I am going to revoke bail,” ordered judge Kaplan.
Bankman-Fried was free on a $250 million bail.
He, however, allegedly contacted a witness over encrypted messaging platform Signal.

Washington, Aug 9 (Ians) Top Wall Street banks, including several Wells Fargo companies, will pay a combined $549 million in fines after admitting that their employees, “including those at senior levels”, often communicated through various messaging platforms on their personal devices, including iMessage, WhatsApp, and Signal, about the business of their employers.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (Cftc) fined the banks for being unable to produce those “off-channel” employee communications going back to at least 2019.
The SEC charged 11 firms for widespread and longstanding failures by the firms and their employees to maintain and preserve electronic communications.
They acknowledged that their conduct violated record-keeping provisions of the federal securities laws and agreed to pay combined penalties of $289 million.

New Delhi, Aug 1 (Ians) Hackers are using a fake Android chatting app called ‘SafeChat’ to steal data from targeted individuals in South Asia, including India, via malicious payload delivered directly through WhatsApp chat.
Cyber-security firm Cyfirma obtained advanced Android malware targeting individuals in the South Asia region. The suspicious Android malware is a dummy chatting app.
“Our initial technical analyses revealed that Apt Bahamut is behind the attack. The nature of this attack, along with previous incidents involving Apt Bahamut, possibly indicate that it was carried out to serve the interests of one nation-state government,” the report noted.
Notably, Apt Bahamut has previously targeted Khalistan supporters, advocating for a separate nation, posing an external threat to India.
“The threat actor has also aimed at military establishments in Pakistan and individuals in Kashmir, all aligning with the interests of one nation state government,” the security researchers indicated.

Revenant, like so many horror stories, begins on a rainy night. Disney+’s latest South Korean drama opens as Professor Gu Kang-mo (Jin Seon-kyu) hurries through his front door, past shelves piled with books, and barricades himself in the study. “What went wrong?” he asks himself, flipping through his notes. Behind him, visible through paper windows, flashes of lightning illuminate a shadowy figure — its hair writhing in a wide halo like snakes.

It’s a shame that there are only 2 episodes of Revenant left when we’re just starting to see some new developments. Of course, we can’t expect any less from writer Kim Eun-Hee; she really knows what thrills. We can say without a doubt that Kim Tae-Ri really might be one of the best in the industry. To play an almost depressed woman who is possessed by an evil spirit who is a teenager is not an easy task, but she does an incredible job of dropping our jaws to the floor. It’s been a while since such a gripping show came our way, and we’re so excited to revisit it again.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Episode?
San-Yeong gets visited by her mother in the house at night. San-Yeong is really worried and tells her mother that it’s dangerous to be around her at night.

The Film Independent Screenwriting Lab is 25 years old. Can you believe it? It’s officially old enough to rent a car! And sure, hardshell clams and giant tortoises can live for centuries, but you don’t reach the quarter-century mark as a Hollywood talent incubator without substance, value and tangible success.
But more than that, this year’s cohort of freshly announced Screenwriting Lab Fellows are special. Why? Because! We’re in the midst of celebrating #AD30, aka the 30th anniversary of Film Independent’s Artist Development programs. And like its elder sibling Project Involve (which got the whole ball of wax rolling in ‘93), the Screenwriting Lab has been an essential industry resource, whether your looking to develop your own skills or tap new talent.

Gunsmoke actor James Arness became quite a force in the television industry on one of the biggest shows ever hitting the air. As a result, longtime fans continue to watch the Western series in the modern-day, embracing Dodge City and its colorful characters. Arness had that in common with his fans, as he said that he watched it every day after it ended.

After serving in World War II, Arness wanted to pursue a career in acting. Similar to many other folks, he initially had some difficulties finding the exact lane he would follow along. He wanted to star in motion pictures, and he managed to secure some roles in. However, many of Hollywood’s leading men didn’t want to share the screen with him because of his height.

San Francisco, Dec 16 (Ians) After the arrest of Sam Bankman-Fried (Sbf), former CEO of bankrupt crypto exchange Ftx, from the Bahamas, all eyes are now on his key associates who are yet to face enforcement authorities, including Indian-origin Nishad Singh.
Singh was in the inner circle of Ftx’s 30-year-old founder Bankman-Fried.
As Ftx’s director of engineering, he lived in a penthouse in the Bahamas, along with key team members like CEO of Alameda Research, Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang, chief technology officer.
“It is hard to imagine that Ellison, Singh, and Wang weren’t aware of much of the activity that harmed Ftx’s investors and customers,” reports Time.
While Sbf is at the centre of Ftx collapse, his arrest has raised several questions about whether or not he is solely responsible for the collapse of Ftx.

New Delhi, Nov 7 (Ians) In order to maintain end-to-end encryption, the encrypted messaging app Signal has introduced a new feature that allows users to customise how to post their stories.
The new feature will allow stories to automatically expire 24 hours after sharing, but anyone can manually delete them anytime before.
One just has to go to Settings and then to “Stories” and turn off Stories to maintain utmost privacy.
“Today, stories have created a major shift in communication in the social media domain, and introducing such cool features is another dynamic to amplify content engagement in a hassle-free mode,” an official report said.
“There has been conjecture on maintaining privacy, and with the new feature introduced at Signal, it enables the user to have intimate conversations with the people who matter,” it added.
The platform has chosen to handle story viewing in a broader way.

San Francisco, Oct 13 (Ians) With an aim to prioritise security and privacy, encrypted messaging app Signal has announced that it will soon stop supporting SMS messages on Android.
The platform said it has “now reached the point where SMS support no longer makes sense”.
“In order to enable a more streamlined Signal experience, we are starting to phase out SMS support from the Android app,” the company said in a blogpost.
“You will have several months to transition away from SMS in Signal, to export your SMS messages to another app, and to let the people you talk to know that they might want to switch to Signal, or find another channel if not,” it added.
The change will only affect users who use Signal as their default SMS app on Android.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (Ians) Meta-owned WhatsApp has become a spam factory as more than one in two Indians now say that they are facing four or more spam messages each day, a report showed on Wednesday.
Despite clear norms laid by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on unsolicited communication, consumers still face unwanted calls, SMS (short messaging services) and Whatsapp messages from vendors, telemarketers, banks, insurance brokers, car dealers, pathology labs, property and other investment agents, among others.
About 68 per cent mobile subscribers, on an average, receive 4 or more promotional or spam SMSs every day with every subscriber surveyed getting spam, according to online community platform LocalCircles.
About 95 per cent of Whatsapp subscribers surveyed got spam while every mobile subscriber surveyed got it.
Financial services, real estate services, and pathology services are top sectors sending spam SMS as well spam Whatsapp, indicating the same offenders are now spamming using both channels.

San Francisco, Oct 9 (Ians) Encrypted messaging app Signal may soon roll out a new Stories-like feature that disappears after 24 hours.
The messaging app has started beta testing a short Stories feature this week that lets users create and share images, videos, and texts with their friends on Signal that will automatically disappear after 24 hours.
“Stories are, of course, end-to-end encrypted, giving you a new way to communicate on Signal without compromising privacy,” the company said in a blogpost.
“You are always fully in control of who you share your stories with. You can share your stories with all of your Signal connections (Signal connections your contacts + anyone you’ve had a 1:1 chat with), or with a custom list of friends, or with any of your Signal groups,” it added.
The platform said that when you share stories with groups, anyone else in that group can view, share, react, and reply to that group story.

Last week’s Emmy awards saw big winners gush with gratitude over their agents, managers, and audiences, but there was one notable benefactor to many stars that went unthanked: the injectable drug semaglutide, whose brand name is Ozempic.
The drug is an insulin regulator for the pre-diabetic, made by the Danish pharma juggernaut Novo Nordisk, whose primary side effect is dramatic weight loss. It has saturated the industry in recent months, helping the beautiful and wealthy shed extra pounds in the never-ending Los Angeles pastime of optimizing appearances. Hollywood nutritionist Matt Mahowald tells Variety that the chief benefits of the injections are “moderating and pulling back insulin secretion, and slowing down your stomach from emptying. It promotes satiation from food.”

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

New Delhi, Aug 25 (Ians) Over 130 organisations have been compromised in a sophisticated attack using simple phishing kits, that exposed the credentials of close to 10,000 employees.
Same hackers attacked communications giant Twilio and as part of the breach, end-to-end encrypted messaging app Signal revealed last week that hackers accessed the phone numbers and SMS verification codes of 1,900 users.
According to cybersecurity company Group-ib, the attack on Twilio was part of a wider campaign by “0ktapus” hacking group.
Based on the request from our client, and from public reports made by Twilio and Cloudflare, the attacks were well designed and executed,” Group-ib said in a blogpost.
The attackers targeted employees of companies that are customers of Identity and Access Management (Iam) leader Okta.
These employees received text messages containing links to phishing sites that mimicked the Okta authentication page of their organisation.
In total, the Group-ib Threat Intelligence team detected 169 unique domains involved in the Oktapus campaign.

It’s that time of year, and of month, again. October means Halloween, pumpkins and trick-or-treating, but now is also when we get to feast our eyes upon all the new horror movies coming to Netflix.
Of course, we’ll be losing a few of our favorites, too. When September ends, Eight Legged Freaks and Ghost Ship, among others will be gone. If you’re a fan of witches, cursed statues and Stephen King, though, then next month is your time.
For starters, we have 2009’s The Figurine arriving on the streaming platform, which is reminiscent of a certain Supernatural episode involving a lucky rabbit’s foot. It follows two boys who find a cursed statue in the woods that gives whoever finds it seven years of good luck, followed by seven years of the opposite.
Another adaptation of a King horror novella, In The Tall Grass, is also on the way.

It’s been two years since “Kingdom” was announced and touted as a South Korean supergroup collaboration between two of Korea’s strongest storytellers— director Kim Seong-hun whose last movie “Tunnel” was a top five movie at the Korean box office in 2016; and writer Kim Eun-hee whose series “Signal” was one of the top Korean dramas of that year. Together, they had joined forces for an ambitious genre mashup: “Kingdom” is set in Korea’s medieval Joseon period where a crown prince is sent on a suicide mission to investigate a mysterious outbreak that leads him to a brutal truth that threatens the kingdom.

Tom Arnold’s “The Hunt for the Trump Tapes” aired an episode Tuesday dedicated to a Trump “Elevator Tape” — even though there’s no proof such a tape exists.
Arnold, who cheerfully admits he has no credibility, told us on the “Shoot This Now” podcast that he’s turned over what he’s learned about the reputed tape to a “real journalist.” You can listen to it on Apple or right here.
There’s just one problem with Arnold telling a real journalist what he knows: As you’ll hear on our podcast, he’s very cagey about what, if anything, he conclusively knows.
And “The Hunt for the Trump Tapes” ended its season Tuesday night without revealing any Trump tapes.
