A dark steady journey into what passes for....
rusoviet26 November 2018
.....acceptable 'lifestyle choices' in 201X continues to unfold before the viewer's very eyes. It numbs the moral outrage to see what passes for 'permitted' as art truly does imitate life and ray Donovan does so for the mid-2010's.

What is a sole relief is the continuing source of light that the writers insert specific to the Catholic Church's impact upon this Irish clan from Boston - the Donovans - that still hold to it how ever lightly. It also is key to 'seeing' souls understand if one is looking for perfection in any man/woman rest assured one shall always be dissapointed and sadly possibly have their own faith destroyed.

Regardless the key to this main character is his awareness of what his moral code will tolerate and when a limit of indifference has been breached by true evil.

This is a very telling episode for it is a turning point in what undoubtedly lies ahead....a continuing descent into what Dante described in his 'Divine Comedy'....'The Inferno'.

The Fish and the Bird? Hmmm....Maybe the SHARK and the Seagull!
Dr_Sagan1 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I must admit, if nothing else, the writers have a good sense of humor...

So many reviews and posts about the show "Jumping the Shark" and they still had the sense of humor to write about ...fishes! They even took the concept in new heights and now their script, not only jumps over the Shark but reaches the skies and flies over the heads of the terrified birds which are flying over the Ocean.

There is also a recipe. Put as many characters in your script as you can, create numerous subplots, big and small situations and when you are out of original ideas, exploit them as much as you can.

In this season, the writers hit rock bottom. They can even decide which characters and which plots are important. They come back and forth. New weird or quirky characters (and some old ones) appear and disappear in a blink of an eye. So many unnecessary subplots.

The writers also think that the audience is unintelligent and they can manipulate it as they see fit.

"The girl with the string" Ivan Belikov said. Not "a girl died" or by her name (Lilya). Just to be sure that the audience will know exactly which girl he's talking about. But if you noticed Belikov arrived AFTER Ray was leaving his house and the "I watch two and a half mens" conversation. So how can he be so specific to Ray? He couldn't have known that Ray knew her (and like her). And if by some "miracle" he did, Ray would be a bad decision for cleaning up the mess. And how the great Russian mobster Belikov couldn't dispose a body? Isn't that his profession? To run the local Russian mob? The writers, they sure are throwing everything they can think of. And in a bad way. Oh hell, they even put Ray to sing ...karaoke in the previous episode.

"Ray Donovan" At Its Best
85122219 November 2016
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Fish and Bird" was a terrific episode in great season 4 so far. Probably one of the best if not the best episode of current season for now. The story itself moved forward in a dramatic way - i really do look forward to see how it will played out. I admire this season also for one reason - they are tied this story from season 3, which is kinda unique for this series overall, and it payoffs for us in a great way so far.

Overall, after half of the season 4 i can safely say that my skepticism based on large negativity regarding season 4 which i read have gone. Season 4 is a as good as any previous seasons, well except for season 1 of course. Really looking forward for next 6 chapters.

Bunchy and the rubber baby
silverton-3795913 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The scenes with Maria alternate between an infant who is uncredited in the cast listing, and a baby doll which has some movement capability. That's understandable because the parents of the infant who appears probably weren't willing to let actors handle the child while standing and passing the baby from one to another, but it's really poorly done and not convincing.

The scene with Embeth Davidz showing Ray her mastectomy scar was unnecessary and it didn't even fit what was happening. These writers are not capable. The cast is being wasted on this story and the story seems to be getting worse with each episode this season.
