As a former Marine, I was very familiar with the heroic Marine withdrawal from the Chosin Reservior in the face of a massive Chinese assault in November 1950. Most books I'd read on the subject highlighted the Marine success, while giving a dismissive shrug to the struggles of the Army units on the east side of the reservoir. So I decided to do some extra reading, and came across the brilliant East of Chosin by Roy Appleman, a primary source for this documentary.
This moving, very detailed documentary does full justice to that book, and more importantly to the soldiers who gave their lives trying to win what looked to be an impossible fight. It is heavily interspersed with interviews with some of the soldiers who survived, which I personally found very emotional. Those men and those they left behind seem to be forgotten by most of history, other than their families and some history nerds like me. This movie gives them their due, and I just hope that it is seen and remembered by others.
