'Dissecting Gwen' is a delightful short visualizing the inner conflict we experience when big moments in life are thrust upon us. Developed and directed by Katherine Barrell, she demonstrates here that she's just as adept behind the camera as she is in front of it.
The swell small cast brilliantly portrays the dueling emotions within Gwen's (Grace Lynn Kung) mind, as her Romantic, Rebel, Analytic, and Fearful aspects are given tangible form. Each actress in these roles outstandingly embodies their particular trait, and I love how their outfits match their personality. Fearful (Caitlin Driscoll) is wrapped up in a cozy, oversized sweater, while Analytic (Farah Merani) is dressed sharply in a crisp white blazer, and the ensembles adorning Rebel (Mercedes Papalia) and Romantic (Erin Boyes) are just as eye-popping. Costume designer Judith Ann Clancy and makeup artist Monic C. McDonald are to be commended.
I also love the set put together for Gwen's inner dialogue, a lavishly adorned and brightly lit arrangement a few footfalls away from the dimly lit, unimpressive bathroom where she passed out. Further cementing the dreamlike quality of the scenario, it's the perfect backdrop for Gwen to have a heart to heart with herself and examine her feelings. If only our own emotional conflicts in life could be visualized and distinguished so easily!
The script concocted by Rebecca Hales is witty and moves along quickly, adding extra punch to the humor that concludes with the sharply comedic ending. Simply put, 'Dissecting Gwen' is inventive and fun, and for as easy as it is to find online, well worth a quick watch. Well done!
