Mediocre at best dash
While 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' is quite hit and miss when it comes to the Wonderbolts Academy setting and the Wonderbolt characters, Rainbow Dash is a great character, with some great episodes such as a show high point "Sonic Rainboom", and the premise sounded so relatable. And will be for anybody that has had a goal in succeeding in what they most want to do, being somebody who knows exactly what it's like and how it takes a lot of time and willpower to get there.
There was a halfway decent episode somewhere in "Newbie Dash" that never materialises. It begins and ends well but everything that happens in the middle is between mediocre at best and a complete distasteful mess. Season 6 was an inconsistent season, of which "Newbie Dash" was one of the worst. The potential was there with a rootable premise but, thanks to the unpleasant characters of the supporting characters and even eventually Rainbow Dash herself, it's not lived up to. Which is sad.
"Newbie Dash" does have good things. The animation is gorgeous in colour and the backgrounds were clearly crafted with a lot of care and love looking at how rich and ambitious in detail it is. Flash is very hit and miss as an animation style, this show has always been one of the best uses of it. The Wonderbolt suits look fabulous with eye popping colours. The music has both groove and atmosphere.
Most of the Mane 6 are in character and have lovely moments, especially Rarity's role at the end. The voice acting is very good indeed, which was not surprising, especially from Ashleigh Ball. "Newbie Dash" begins quite promisingly and the ending and Rainbow Dash's candour towards her friends are touching.
Despite all those things, "Newbie Dash" has never clicked with me and still doesn't. A major problem being the characterisation of the Wonderbolts. This episode has all of what made me dislike them so much in Season 5's "Rarity Investigates!" and amplifies them to breaking point, they are not just jerks here they are downright bullies. It's certainly enough to make one be put off Spitfire for life. It made me feel terrible for Rainbow Dash when seeing how much it affects her, sadly that sympathy for her was lost in the middle act where she became too neurotic and her treatment of her friends was not remotely amusing and unnecessarily mean. Luckily though the sympathy comes back at the end.
Personally did find the humour cringe-worthy and lacking in variety, the wit and intelligence isn't there and it comes over as more childish and not particularly tasteful. The story as said starts and ends well but is not easy to sit through for most of the length, the concept definitely could have been explored more as it is feeling a bit afterthought-like at the moment. The moral is another one of those "sounded relatable on paper but executed in a muddled and somewhat preachy way", the unpleasant characterisation and less than attention grabbing undermining it.
Concluding, mediocre with some terrible elements. 4/10
