“Yasmeen’s Element” opens with a quote about education from Malala Yousafzai. It’s a smart move, immediately bringing the topic to the forefront of the viewing experience while invoking one of the most famous advocates of girls’ education, one who hails from co-writer and Pakistani-American director Amman Abbasi’s country of origin. But the film, an enthralling escapade centered on the title character and co-written by Jeffrey E. Stern and Sana Jafri, doesn’t need it
Eshal Fatima stars as Yasmeen, a 12-year-old student in a North Pakistan village who delights in going to school and spending time with her classmates. One day, the teacher dismisses students early after speaking with soldiers outside the school, assigning everyone one element from the periodic table to present on the next day. Lola is a gripping 2024 film directed by Nicola Peltz Beckham that hits you right in the feels and reminds me of movies like Little Miss Sunshine and The Florida Project. The story revolves around Lola, a young girl stuck in a seriously messed-up family situation. Her mom’s all about preaching about sin and God’s wrath, while her mom’s boyfriend, Trick, is just plain bad news. Lola’s only ray of hope? Her little brother, Arlo. She’d do anything to protect him from their toxic home life, even if it meant taking on crazy jobs like strip dancing and working in the supermarket, just to save up enough cash to get them out of there. But here’s the twist: to cope with all that life throws at her, Lola turns to drugs. And suddenly, all that preaching about sin starts to feel a bit hypocritical. She starts asking herself,...

Caleb Landry Jones hasn’t been quite so present onscreen since the heyday-of-sorts that was Get Out, Twin Peaks, Three Billboards, and The Florida Project in one year. Since then, though, he’s arguably grown more compelling. Amidst a Best Actor win for Nitram at Cannes in 2021, making evident his position as one of America’s more fascinating thespian exports, he’s embarked on a wildly ambitious and satisfying music career: 2020’s The Mother Stone, 2021’s Gadzooks Vol. 1, and 2022’s Gadzooks Vol. 2 are full-bodied psychedelic-rock experiments that put just about every actor’s vanity project to shame. As our interview in 2021 made clear, he wants to make sounds that are simply not on any prominent musician’s mind.
Jones is returning on April 5 with his 13-track LP Hey Gary, Hey Dawn, ahead of which there’s a lead-off music video for the track “Corn Mine” that Sacred Bones describes as...

Disney World is six miles away, but its Cinderella Castle might as well be outer space for those who live in the candy-colored budget motels up the highway, subsisting on its margins and absorbing its fairy dust fantasy. A buzzy premiere at Cannes, several breakout performances, and a career-high performance by Willem Dafoe were among the surprises of the critically acclaimed indie The Florida Project when it arrived in 2017. Directed by Sean Baker (Tangerine), the slice-of-life film mirrored the pace of a hot slow summer in Florida — one saturated in dreaminess, punctuated with mounting dramas on its edges, and building to a stunning and unexpected ending that continues to dazzle, haunt, and perplex viewers. With the film streaming on Netflix again, you can ponder it yourself —...

Let’s explore what happened at the end of 2017’s The Florida Project.
The critically praised film, which also stars Willem Dafoe, follows a group of young kids who live at the Magic Castle motel (and some neighboring establishments) on the tourist strip of Kissimmee, Florida, just down the road from Walt Disney World.
Despite being close to such a happy place, the lives of Moonee, Scooty, Dicky, and Chauncey are anything but. However, the group tries their best to find stuff to do, even if it gets in the way of other locals in the area.

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.

The Florida Project director Sean Baker has come on board to executive produce Modern Whore, Nicole Bazuin’s documentary adaptation of Andrea Werhun’s sex work memoir.
The feature-length hybrid film is currently shooting narrative re-enactments as part of a doc based on Modern Whore: A Memoir, a 2022 book that recalled Werhun’s work as an escort and in strip clubs, for which Bazuin provided extensive photography.
The illustrated memoir in turn sprang from a 2020 short film Modern Whore that Werhun starred in, Bazuin directed and which had its world premiere at SXSW. The Modern Whore feature documentary will be told from Werhun’s perspective and have her portray her former escort alias Mary Ann and her stripper persona Sophia, as well a more recent foray into OnlyFans as part of her sex work career in Toronto.
The indie will also incorporate writing and collaborations with other sex workers telling their own stories.

Beyond Utopia (Madeleine Gavin)
A harrowing, brave account of what it’s like to defect from North Korea, Madeleine Gavin’s Beyond Utopia follows a heroic pastor and the people he helps. Perhaps most unforgettable is a multigenerational family whose escape is shown through furtive, horror-movie-like handheld camera and revealing interviews. As Gavin offers a rundown of North Korean politics, we see this family slowly reckon with their own brainwashing and realize the world outside North Korea is not what their upbringing taught them to believe. – Lena W.

Being set around Halloween, Scream VI was packed with immediately recognizable horror costumes. Jason Voorhees. Freddy Krueger. Michael Myers. Pinhead. Not to mention Ghostface. They were all in there. But during a party scene, one of the characters is wearing a costume you might not recognize. It’s a knight’s suit of armor, but made out of cardboard. That’s the same costume the protagonist in the 2007 horror comedy Murder Party (watch it Here) wears. If you didn’t recognize it, then we have to tell you all about Murder Party – because it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Murder Party was the feature directorial debut of Jeremy Saulnier, who has gone on to direct films like the revenge thriller Blue Ruin, the neo-Nazi horror film Green Room, and the mystery thriller Hold the Dark, as well as episodes of True Detective season 3. Saulnier also wrote the screenplay for the film.

Willem Dafoe has a face made for film. When the sixty-something actor appears on screen, his prominent cheekbones, wide eyes, and toothy grin are difficult to take your gaze off. Combined with his slender frame and his raspy, gravely, deep voice, the actor’s portrayal of Jesus Christ allegedly prompted Sergio Leone to opine “This is not the face of our Lord, this is the face of Satan!”
Dafoe hasn’t played Satan at all over the course of his career, but he’s certainly played his share of villains, bringing his signature menace to dozens of cinematic crooks and psychopaths. After his first lead role, in Kathryn Bigelow’s 1982 biker drama “The Loveless,” his early parts were largely antagonists to the lead heroes, such as the alluring but frightening criminals in “Streets of Fire” and “To Live and Die in L.A.” The part that arguably brought him the most widespread,...

Moya-Smith, who was involved in development and also feature physical production, was recently working on Doug Liman’s Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal as an ex-UFC middleweight fighter who ends up working at a rowdy bar in the Florida Keys where things are not as they seem. Moya-Smith was also overseeing Wrecking Crew, the Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa buddy action comedy from Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto. The executive was part of the film teams overseen by Courtenay Valenti and Julie Rapaport.
Moya-Smith was hired during the Jonathan Glickman-run era of the MGM Motion Picture Group, and continued to work throughout the Michael De Luca-Pamela Abdy regime into the studio’s absorption by Amazon. Prior to Amazon’s takeover over MGM,...

A nearly unrecognizable Sofia Vergara playing a cartel boss, a new retelling of the story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, Kevin Hart assembling a team for a daring heist and Dan Levy dealing with loss and grief are among the standout projects hitting Netflix this January.
Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow lands on Netflix on Jan. 4. The film is the latest cinematic retelling of the miraculous story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972, with the survivors being forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. After debuting in Venice, Society of the Snow has picked up plenty of awards on the international film festival circuit, and it recently made the shortlists in four categories for the 2024 Academy Awards, including best international feature film.

It’s a quiet month on Netflix in January, but the streamer still has some good stuff lined up for the new year, including an interesting documentary about the Centra Tech cryptocurrency scam. Bitconned arrives on the first of the month alongside Netflix’s latest Harlan Coben adaptation, Fool Me Once, which sees an ex-soldier called Maya witness her husband’s murder on a nanny cam. The crime then leads her down a deadly path where she uncovers a deadly conspiracy.
Schitt’s Creek star Daniel Levy will also debut his first film as writer and director with Good Grief on Netflix this month. The movie follows Levy’s character Marc as he does some soul-searching after the death of his husband.

The career trajectory of character actor extraordinaire Willem Dafoe is one of the more unusual among contemporary Hollywood stars. From his early days of being routinely cast as a heavy, Dafoe worked his way through the system thanks to the sheer force of his talent, finally being cast as leads, often portraying in detail such real-life figures as actor Max Schreck, artist Vincent Van Gogh and even Jesus Christ.
Among Dafoe’s early bad guy roles were as biker gang leaders in both Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Loveless” and Walter Hill‘s “Streets of Fire.” But his performance as kindly Sgt. Elias in Oliver Stone‘s “Platoon” changed all that, resulting in his first Academy Award nomination. Three more Oscar nominations followed, and Dafoe has also earned three Golden Globe nominations and four noms from the Screen Actors Guild.

Following the arrival of Godzilla Minus One in theaters, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli‘s latest masterstroke, The Boy and the Heron, is already flying high at the December box office! Analysts say The Boy and the Heron could soar to the number one spot this weekend after earning $2.39M in Thursday previews, with a chance to collect $10M+ over the next few days.
This trend is an excellent look for films stomping out of Japan and into domestic theaters. Godzilla Minus One roared last weekend with $2.1M in previews before going nuclear with $4.7M on Friday and a 3-day total of $11.4M across 2,308 theaters. Meanwhile, The Boy and the Heron opened on 1,774 screens across the United States and Canada, expanding to 2,205 markets this weekend.
Here’s a plot synopsis for The Boy and the Heron. If you want to go into the film blind, do not read it!

Would I have survived this life if there was no cinema? This is the sort of question I end up asking myself when I am fortunate enough to come across a movie like Scrapper. In many ways, movies work as a sort of wish fulfillment. Because how else would you describe The Florida Project in reverse, where the kid gets saved from abandonment instead of running away to oblivion?
Charlotte Regan’s debut feature, the Grand Jury winner at this year’s Sundance, reminds you of another film that was also directed by a young woman named Charlotte. Not to mention, Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun from last year also happens to have a thirty-something father and a twelve-something daughter at the center of it. However, unlike Aftersun, which is essentially a trip down memory lane, Scrapper is quite content to linger in its present. A lot of information is withheld, and not many words are said,...

Fusion Entertainment has signed Bria Vinaite, an actress who got her breakout role as a woman living on the economic fringes in Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project.”
The Lithuania-born actress was discovered by filmmaker Baker when she was working in the fashion industry and cast in the lead part of a struggling single mother raising her daughter in a motel. Her performance earned Vinaite multiple award nominations from critics groups including Chicago Film Critics Association and San Diego Film Critics Association.
Since “The Florida Project” debuted in 2017, Vinaite has gone on to act in TV series including “The Oa” and films such as “Balance Not Symmetry” and “Lost in Transmissions.” Next year, she will star in “Pandemonium,” the latest feature from Icelandic filmmaker Anton Sigurdsson. It follows a group of wealthy New Yorkers trapped at a wellness retreat run by a nefarious guru. The film shoots in New Jersey...

Plot: A woman seeks revenge against the man who kidnapped her mother.
Review: I knew next to nothing of The Marsh King’s Daughter when going into it except for the cast. Ben Mendelsohn, Daisy Ridley, and Garrett Hedlund are some of my favorite actors, so really, that’s all the film needed to sell me on it. But what followed was a gripping character piece with a tremendous performance at its center. While there are some pacing issues and a familiar story, the performances and cinematography manage to carry the film. This takes what could have been a standard tale of kidnapping and puts it through an interesting filter. And I think a lot of that concerns its strong introduction.
Helena is established as a strong and capable lead right from the onset. The way she hunts and is constantly trying to learn from her father does so much to...

Helena (Daisy Ridley), the title character of “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” is a woman living what she thinks is a safe, comfortable middle-class existence — just like the heroes of “Cape Fear” or “Straw Dogs.” And like those characters, she’s ripped out of her cocoon by a man with a vengeful agenda. In this case, the self-righteous stalker-invader is her father, Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn), who raised her in a cabin in the marshland wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, teaching her how to hunt and survive. In the film’s early scenes, we might almost be watching some off-the-grid version of the Laura Ingalls Wilder story, as Helena drinks in the woodland skills taught by Jacob, with each lesson marked by a homemade tattoo (he inks a deer on her neck when she gets her first kill).

“Anora” follows Baker’s 2021 film “Red Rocket,” which starred Simon Rex and premiered at Cannes and his 2017 film “The Florida Project,” which garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Willem Dafoe’s sensitive turn as the manager of a rundown Orlando motel. Both were released by A24.

Based on nothing but its name, Neil Burger’s “The Marsh King’s Daughter” sounds like the first draft of a Shakespeare comedy or maybe a fantasy adventure about a princess who inherits a spirited wetland full of talking birds and bullfrogs. Indeed, the title first belonged to a Hans Christian Andersen story about a pair of talking storks who build their nest atop the home of a Viking warrior, and Burger’s movie — much like the 2017 Karen Dionne novel on which it’s based — re-uses it as part of a conscious effort to set fantastical expectations for what turns out to be a grounded (if somewhat dubious) psychological thriller.
It’s a fitting misdirect for a film about a tween girl whose seemingly magical childhood, spent way off the grid in the wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is violently disenchanted by the discovery that her father is actually a...

Before becoming an independent producer and story consultant, filmmaker Rona Edwards spent several years working in creative development for production shingles headed by the likes of John Larroquette (the Emmy-winning actor) and Michael Phillips (the Oscar-winning producer.) Since striking out on her own, Edwards has had her own projects set up in both television and feature film at places like NBC, USA Network, Warner Bros, HBO and Lifetime TV.
With business partner Monika Skerbelis, Edwards also co-wrote the books The Complete Filmmaker’s Guide to Festivals: Your All Access Pass to Launching Your Film on the Festival Circuit and I Liked It, Didn’t Love It: Screenplay Development from the Inside Out, currently in its 3rd edition. (Check out our interview earlier this year with Monika Skerbelis here.)

David Yates, perhaps best known for directing four “Harry Potter” movies (and three “Fantastic Beasts” spin-off films) is back with a much more down-to-earth project. “Pain Hustlers,” based on a 2018 New York Times Magazine article by Evan Hughes that was expanded into a book last year, traces the lives of a pair of pharmaceutical reps (played by Emily Blunt and Chris Evans) who play a key role in the opioid epidemic that has swallowed the country. As it turns out the American healthcare system was just as otherworldly to Yates as anything J.K. Rowling could have dreamed up.
Yates’ colleague Lewis Taylor sent him the original article and Yates was blown away. “I read the article and what immediately attracted me was it portrayed a healthcare system and an industry that was so far removed from anything I knew in the UK. It seemed extraordinary that these practices were taking...

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Favourite” scored 10 Oscar nominations in 2019, including bids for Best Picture and Best Director for Lanthimos and a Best Actress win for Olivia Colman. Stone and Lanthimos reunite this year for “Poor Things,” which could be set to have an even better year at the Oscars than their previous film did.
“Poor Things,” from Searchlight Pictures, follows Emma Stone as Bella, who is brought back to life by Willem Dafoe‘s doctor. Bella then goes on a journey of self-discovery, aided and hindered alike by the likes of Mark Ruffalo‘s caddish lawyer and Ramy Youssef‘s hopeful suitor. The movie, which releases in US theaters on December 8, has received exquisite reviews and a near-perfect score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, we are predicting “Poor Things” to have a rich year at the upcoming Academy Awards. Here’s a full list of the categories we think...
