One of the joys of being a long-time comics reader is coming across ideas that are equal degrees clever and obvious. It’s safe to say Jed MacKay’s idea to pit Moon Knight, the avatar of an Egyptian god, against a vampire pyramid scheme is one of those.
We saw Marc Spector and his gang of misfits from the Midnight Mission take on an Instagram influencer-esque vampire (peddling eternal undeath instead of essential oils) making a play for control of New York at night, and it was great fun. Turns out, though, that it was also the start of something very big. “As I was doing that, I’m like, ‘well, this could be bigger,’” MacKay tells Den of Geek. “So we do dispense with it in Moon Knight,...

The first issue of Marvel Comics' latest event series, Blood Hunt, hit stands today. However, it wasn't what we expected from a comic that's mostly promised to pit Earth's Mightiest Heroes against a seemingly endless vampire hoard.
It begins with the world's Darkforce users being turned into portals which have blocked out the sun across the globe. With that, vampires emerge from the shadows, feeding on humans and turning countless others.
The Avengers attempt to fend them off and, after he asks Miles Morales/Spider-Man for a favour, Blade reaches out to them with the promise of information capable of helping turn the tide. However, when his truck is teleported to their base, a group of ultra-vampires known as the Bloodcoven emerge instead.
They make short work of the team, either incapacitating or killing them. Black Panther and Thor both die, though the latter buys Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel,...

It ends where it all began. Sony Pictures’s Insidious: The Red Door is out in theaters now. The horror franchise’s original cast is back in Insidious: The Red Door, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson. But Wilson covertly pulls triple duty in this sequel; the filmmaker collaborated with the band Ghost, singing on the end title track “Stay.”
The track is a cover of Shakespears Sister’s 1992 hit, which you can check out below.
For the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Wilson about his directorial debut, where Wilson recounted the entire story behind “Stay.” The director candidly broke down how he covertly pulled it together and the inspiration behind it.
“It happened behind most people’s backs. I’ll tell you that. Of course, if it’s a big hit, they’ll all take credit for it,” Wilson jokes. “No. I knew I wanted a song,...

Left alone for the night in their new orchard farmhouse, three teenage sisters soon find themselves at the mercy of some unscrupulous townie boys. The tables are turned however, when the malevolence that roams the orchard starts to hunt down the boys.
“Turning the tables” is the defining trope of exploitation cinema. The early 1970s was a time when exploitation cinema was in its prime. Wes Craven made The Last House on the Left and Sam Peckinpah made Straw Dogs but there were many other “rape and revenge” films at the time. The same debates about subtext can be had today with violent horror films. Was The Last House on the Left really about the Vietnam War?...

Written by Michael Caissie (Hunter’s Moon) and adapted and directed by Rigoberto Castaneda (Blackout), Origin Unknown – aka Sin Origen – is a mash-up of horror and cartel-crime thriller, like Narcos had a baby with Let the Right One In and From Dusk Till Dawn. It’s a curious combo, and one that works very well, with a guy attempting to leave a cartel so he can move on to a normal life with his wife and kids. Of course, this doesn’t exactly go smoothly, and while this is all happening there’s a young girl being hunted by warriors with big ole medieval weapons. It takes gangsters and vampires and creates something pretty damn unique.

Originality is something I always scream out for, especially when it comes to horror movies. I’m not someone that constantly complains about remakes or sequels but I love to see things I have never seen before, twists on ideas that are well known and Hunter’s Moon at least aims to do this.
It all seems very clichéd at first but I’m sure that’s the idea. We see a family – Mother, father, three daughters – moving from the city into a new house in a small town. Once settled the parents go out for the night, leaving their teenage daughter’s home alone, only for three locals to have invited themselves into the property. From there though,...

In the wake of the canceled 2020 SXSW Film Festival edition, Mailchimp has teamed with Oscilloscope and SXSW to launch Support the Shorts, a streaming event to view select short films from the fest for free on the Mailchimp Presents platform starting today. This will include over 70 short films, including the four festival winners and seven special recognition films which were recently announced.
“The night that SXSW was cancelled, filmmakers were wondering what to do next, and prominent members of the tight-knit film community offered support and a signal-boost — we wondered if we could do the same at scale. With this project, we’re trying to accomplish two things: to offer these artists a platform for exposure, and to provide access to some amazing work from artists I’m sure we’ll be hearing about for a long time to come. The cancelation of South by Southwest earlier this month was a huge blow to people across the industry, but short filmmakers whose work was set to debut there were particularly hard hit. With no festival, these filmmakers — many of them early in their careers — were suddenly without a platform to widely share their films. Now, boutique distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories and tech company Mailchimp have a solution: Today, they launched an online platform offering the vast majority of this year’s SXSW shorts online for free.
The site will feature around 75 films, all for free with no login required. Most are available now, with more to be added in the coming days.

Following its abrupt cancellation earlier this month due concerns over the coronavirus outbreak, SXSW on Tuesday announced the 2020 award winners for the 27th annual film festival.
After being forced to shut down a week before its scheduled March 13 kickoff, SXSW director of film Janet Pierson revealed alternative plans that included providing screening links to allow jurors to see and hand out awards to the fest’s competition films.

Normally, the SXSW Film Festival award winners are handed out during a lively ceremony at the end of the first weekend, but this year required some improvisation. When the SXSW became the first major film event to cancel in the face of global pandemic, it was unclear what would happen to the hundreds of films and filmmakers primed for the late March festivities.
While many filmmakers were left struggling to figure out their next moves, the festival’s leadership opted to hand out awards to the films set to premiere at the festival, with the juries announced weeks earlier. SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson and her team made the decision to “continue and expand to all the juried competitions, if the majority of the filmmakers opted in and juries were available.”

We have a relatively quiet week of home media releases ahead of us this week, but the titles that are coming out are a rad bunch of films nonetheless. Scream Factory is doing the Dark Lord’s work with both the Collector’s Edition of April Fool’s Day and the HD release of Frankenstein: The True Story. If you missed it in theaters back in January, Nicolas Pesce’s The Grudge (2020) is headed to various platforms this Tuesday, and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition release of Philip Ridley’s The Passion of Darkly Noon as well.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 24th include Endless Night, Cabal, Hunter’s Moon, The Zombinator, and The Wizard: Collector’s Edition.

Since its late 2019 launch, fledgling streaming service Disney+ has only released a handful of original films, from projects initially bound for theatrical releases (like the Willem Dafoe-starring dogsledding adventure “Togo”) to those expressly made for the service (like the live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp”). When filmmaker Julia Hart and her husband and co-writer Jordan Horowitz signed on to make “Stargirl,” the streaming service was still almost two years away from its public debut.
It was something of a leap of faith for the “Fast Color” and “Miss Stevens” team. They had no idea what Disney+ was going to look like, but they knew it would be big (Disney big!) and that it offered them a chance to scale up their production in a way that independent filmmaking might not be able to provide.

This week I wanted to take a look at the wider world of collecting comics, looking at a very niche subject outside of just buying and selling comics online. So you buy and buy comics, at cons, local comic shops, markets and online. What do you do next? Bag and board them, then what? Put them in a long box in alpha numeric order, then what? Take them out and read them whenever you feel like it. They all seam obvious and very reasonable steps to take, but there is one that slots in between bagging and boarding them and putting them snuggly in a long box. I am of course talking about logging your comics, whether that be by good old pen and paper or digitally. I myself used to operate a highly detailed spreadsheet on Open Office. I haven’t updated it in about two years so there is that!

1091 Media, the new owners of what had been known as The Orchard Film Group, told staff Friday that a new strategic direction at the company will include distributing fewer, more targeted movies each year and that some layoffs are in the offing.
Company COO and CFO Chad Blackwell and chief revenue officer Julie Dansker relayed the news to staff in a memo. The company had been reviewing all aspects of the business, with the assessment to right-size the company for efficiency and to promote growth.
The plan is to focus on distributing 4-6 highly curated films a year, the memo said. The reset will result in nine layoffs — two in New York and seven in Los Angeles — or about a quarter of the company’s current staff. Variety had the news first today.

Indie studio 1091, formerly known as The Orchard, is laying off nine employees or roughly 25% of its staff as it moves in a new strategic direction that will see the company release fewer films. The cuts will be across the company and will include reduction in marketing, distribution, and other areas.
The layoffs come roughly three months after the company was sold by Sony Music to Daniel Stein and Joe Samberg, principals of 1091 Media. The two had been original investors in the Orchard. After 1091 took over the studio, they embarked on a review of the business operations and determined that they needed to adapt a new plan that will focus on distributing between four to six theatrical releases a year. Paul Davidson is stepping down as executive vice-president of film and television of The Orchard in a move that follows the recent sale of the film group to investor 1091 Media.

At time of writing sources could not expand on the succession plan, nor did they elaborate on 1091 Media’s plans for the film and television business.

At the finish line of its sale to 1091 Media, distributor the Orchard’s film and TV head Paul Davidson is parting ways with the company.
In an amicable split, the creative executive addressed staff in person and in a company-wide memo on Tuesday in New York City to inform them of his decision.
“While I am very appreciative that 1091 asked me to continue to run the company in its new iteration, for me the time is right to look toward my own next chapter and build something new,” Davidson wrote in his note.
In his roughly five years, Davidson has overseen the acquisition and release of many of the indie distributor’s titles, including the Oscar nominee for documentary feature “Cartel Land,” the Sundance hit “The Overnight,” acclaimed fashion doc “Dior & I,” and the cult film “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Before the Orchard, Davidson led Microsoft’s Xbox Video service.
