A promising idea with a disappointing execution

I am coming here (obviously by the username) as a Sonic fan who found this show through the social media promotions of its writer/creator of Grandma vs the Internet Alan Denton's, who also writes and edits for Sonic Boom (TV). Knowing how Boom TV is brilliant at giving creative, humorous twists to old hats, I put aside the cliché premise as an issue and looked to see what sort of new spin on the idea of an elderly person reacting to the internet would be presented

Unfortunately, the first episode proved very disappointing. Now, that's not to say that there aren't positives. The idea of Grandma getting supernatural powers from a Nigerian prince lends itself to a lot of content. So is said Grandma reacting to the idea of sending unwanted photos by fighting back. Wordplay is also when Denton truly shines, with the innuendos being hilarious.

However, what was disappointing was that I found the plot seems to not do much new with the idea of posting male genitalia on the internet, simply presenting them as though they are automatically funny when they are not. It also seems to be referencing a lot of cremated memes (When was the last time anybody saw Peanut Butter Jelly Time? Or the cat from "I Can Haz Cheezburger"?). Again presenting them like they are automatically funny. Grandma's absurd expressions tend to come off as more creepy than funny. Visual humor in general is the show's weakest point, and unfortunately, it is that which the show mostly relies on for comedy. Without spoiling anything, the ending is rather rushed and subpar.

Overall, a good concept rendered mediocre and forgettable by bad execution.
