Sex & Nudity

  • Full rear nudity of an older teen male in a shower is seen for a while. Men's chests are seen briefly a couple of times. An unclothed male infant is seen from the front as he is dipped into a bath during a baptism. A boy is seen for a minute or so in his underpants trying on clothes. There's no female nudity.
  • An older teen male survives by prostituting himself to much older men. We only see him meeting the men or exiting hotel rooms. He converses frankly with 10-year-old Mischa about this and shows the boy cell-phone pics of the sexual activity (but we don't see them, and the strongest language we hear is "tits.")
  • Mischa is shown covering his ears when we hear the subdued grunting of his mother and step-father having sex.
  • An old video of a children's TV show talks about a child being unwilling to part with his mother and attributes it to an Oedipal complex.

Violence & Gore

  • Guns and gun violence play a major role in the film. There are several long guns and pistols displayed prominently on a wall. A mounted wolf head has a visible bullet hole. Ten-year-old Mischa's step-father places a pistol in his hand and "helps" him shoot at the ceiling. (This follows a rant by the step-father about ancient Spartans being taken from their families at age seven for military training). We learn that the child was taken to a shooting range; it's implied that he fired the weapons there.
  • Two people plot to kill someone with a pistol and make it look like a suicide.
  • A person grabs a gun that someone else is holding and gets shot in the abdomen. We see some blood on a towel wrapped around the waist.
  • We see a person starting to drown someone else in a bathtub.
  • A character punishes a child by repeatedly striking his hand with a stick.

Profanity

  • As English subtitled on VUDU, there's one "bullsh*t" and one "faggot".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Adults and older teens are shown smoking several times; it's not emphasized. They also drink but aren't shown over-indulging. Other drugs are not evident.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Throughout much of the movie, Mischa's step-father Mr. Nikos behaves toward Mischa and his mother in a domineering way, trying to control every aspect of their lives and bordering on threat and abuse.
