Plots that were shrouded in mystery was actually not a mystery. Not enough justice to court politics.

When I watched the first episode I was hooked into it, thinking it will be a drama relating to court politics and occasionally some action. The action did come but the politics were mere child's play. Many questions remained unclear, many plots didn't make sense. Maybe the subtitle didn't do justice but the story itself lacked charisma. If not the court politics, then martial art and charisma of the protagonist could have made up for it. The only thing that made me rate it 6, is all those randomly popping philosophies and compromises made for love.

Usually, period dramas are a bit boring, especially when they exceed the 16 episodes barrier. However, this one, kept the interest high till the end. Sure, the mystery wasn't that good, as it was easy to figure out. But, the whole bad politics plot was entertaining, with lots of action scenes and very realistic costumes and settings. The performances were great, and probably that's the main reason why this one gets 8 out of 10 from me. The love story was okay, though, it got a bit tiring towards the end, plus, they didn't seem to have chemistry at first. But, it worked out eventually, so that helped with the love triangle as well. Overall, 8 out of 10.

It's quite enjoyable if you can get past the death of one of the love interests. I felt it was unnecessary and poorly done. With a few changes this could have easily gotten another star from me.

Not sorry I watched it, but wouldn't recommend when there are so many other excellent k dramas out there.

A bit scary

This story is a bit scary. Hour, after hour of Asian entertainment on Netflix. And they all tell the same story, although densely populated the Asian countries have only a handful of individuals. The rest is just a mass that requires food and shelter from the king in order to worship him. And make no mistake, the king is not an individual either, he is only the provider and the slave to their whims and happiness.

I have watched so many Korean historical dramas yet i find this story the most catchy. The storyline is so different from others. I love how they made the story like how "Pyunsoo Group" made others obey them by poisoning them and how they controlled everything. I mean the poison, how it was made and all. It has so many varieties that 40 episodes didn't bore me at all. Pyunsoo group making the water bureau, trying to mint currency by stealing copper, making a puppet king, how the real crown prince made himself stronger in 5 years, how Dae Mok's granddaughter always helped and how she loved the prince,.....I don't know but everything including the cast of this drama is 💯. I really love this drama.

first part awefull and last part awesome

I think the Story Writer hasted at the first part that's why many things were missing and the first part was mediocre

things started to get interesting and more realistic after Crown prince's father died. And the story got better from then

The thing i liked about this series was the evolve of the crown price and how mercy can win over people

But have to admit the first part was awful and unrealistic

Enjoyable Melodrama

This was a melodrama in every sense of the definition; the pacing, filming and story were all in line with a melodrama. Despite my dislike of melodramas, I thought this was well done enough that I enjoyed it enough to finish. While there was a lot of over-acting (L - I'm looking at you!) there were also a lot of good actors, mainly our main couple played by the fabulous Seung-Ho and So-Hyun, who always felt genuine in their emotions throughout the show. Another great character was Woo Bo who also did a fantastic job. Also might I add that Hwa-Goon deserved better!! To be honest I liked her better than Ga-Eun and I was disappointed she was never given a chance at a romance with the crown prince. I also appreciated the fact that injuries and sword wounds were dealt with in a realistic manner where if someone was slashed they died (which was my only complaint with My Country). Overall this was enjoyable but not something I would re-watch.

Mask off

I found the main cast to be quite dislikable. Heo Joon Ho was the only one who had a decent performance. Yoo Seung Ho was overexaggerating with every breath and Kim So Hyun was a plank of wood. Their characters were equally as bad and underdelivering. The most important plot device in the drama was the mask, however, although its introduction was okay, but how they handled it later on was disappointing and its conclusion and reveal made the whole journey worthless to care about the mask. At the beginning, I thought they would do something clever with the mask play but it turned out it was just some random element to kick-start the story and give the drama its title.
